Don't judge a book by it's cover...
Chose this course based on the photos and the fact that it's on the "Jurassic" side of the island. The surroundings and scenery were nothing short of amazing...and the main reason I would recommend this course, I just wish I could say the same for the course and facilities. The greens on the front 9 were barely playable (the back 9 was better, but not by much), fairways and bunkers were not very well maintained, restaurant and driving range were not available and the exterior around the clubhouse area was a bit rundown. The clubhouse itself and the staff were great...but we finished our round at 4 and everything was closed already. The saving grace for the day was my local playing partners Matt and Amber and Matt's visiting father Terry Morgan, truly wonderful people whom I would enjoy being around anytime. Terry is an Australian golf course architect (I looked him up...legit!) and getting his insights about the course (layout, design, etc) from a different point of view was great. All agreed there is so much potential for Royal Hawaiin that isn't being reached...it could truly be the gem of the island.
Golf Course Condition
The golf course has a beautiful view, but the course itself is not well maintained. The grass and fairways lack landscaping, and all the greens were aerated. Additionally, the staff failed to mention this. If you're solely interested in the view, it can be a nice course to visit
Jurassic Park course
The scenery was beautiful like entering Jurassic Park and the staff was friendly, but the greens on the course were in very bad condition. I just hope the greens are managed well. I will go again when I have a chance.
Royal Hawaiian
Have played this course many times, mostly in the month of September. Played yesterday on June 7th and the greens were some of the worst I have ever played on. The fairways were spars with very little grass to hit off of. I’m not sure if the course conditions are related to a particular time of year but if I ever decide to play it again I will definitely call and get a course overview before I book a tee time. You can pay $50 at a municipal course and have much better playing conditions.
Jurassic Park
Amazing course, even better scenery! Only criticism is that the greens were in rough shape. Could just be the season and overall didn’t have a huge impact on how much I enjoyed the round but they were rough.
Steadily going downhill.
Its location is absolutely beautiful. It is also a Pete Dye course which means difficult with risk and reward. That being said, The front nine is in bad shape. Many greens are not well maintained. They are bumpy and do not putt true. Even the fairways are just ok. The roughs are not evenly mowed. No drink cart. You have to buy drinks inside the club house. Range closed. I have seen this course in its glory days. It is far from it now. You would want to play it just because I am not sure how long it will stay open like this. Look at what happened to Koolau golf course just down the road.
Green, and Fairway needs a lot of work
I was there 6/4/2023. The green was horrible. Staff told me that there was something wrong with the treatments. I was told the fairways and greens are decent but it wasn't. Check reviews and with staff before booking. The surrounding was beautiful and I don't regret going there. But I think the golf course should have let people know that this is the case.
Unforgettable
It’s incredibly impressive what the grounds crew has done here. The course here is kept to the quality you’d expect from a nice muni course, but your local park style muni isn’t carved out of a treacherous mountain jungle.
Honestly, anybody complaining about this course has rocks for brains, they’re a prissy simpleton who is unable to appreciate the beauty of the world we live on and their opinion should be disregarded.
Go play golf here. You will remember it forever.
Bring extra balls, you’ll lose a bunch and be laughing the whole way.
The front 9 takes you deep into the jungle, you’ll be surrounded by trees and cliffs and mountains as high as you can see. It poured rain on us for the front 9, and we were nothing but smiles taking in the jungle atmosphere. Hit some great shots on the front, which will absolutely eat every ball in your bag if you’re not careful.
The back 9 is along the mountainside, with incredible views over a valley, and a bit easier golfing to go along with it. We saw a herd of wild boar run across the 11th fairway, very cool to see.
Just an incredibly special place, an afternoon I’ll think about for the rest of my life.
Jurassic Golf
Best course I've played thus far, I'm a California resident
Challenging course in a beauty jungle like atmosphere.
The most scenic and beautiful course we have played. Many elevated tee shots that shared outstanding views. The natural rough bordering the fairways are heavy- so bring an extra half dozen balls. The entire staff and especially the starter Ernie were amazing. Don’t miss an opportunity to play this course. Even though snack bar was closed- drinks and sandwiches were available in the pro shop.
Stunning views but very tough course;
What a golf course, overall a great experience in HI!
I had a tee time booked through GolfNow for Friday 4/28/23 @1:36pm. When I got to the course nobody was there and the course was closed due to rain so I didn't get to play that day. I have tried to contact golfnow for a refund due to closure policy but have not been able to connect with anyone. I did get to play on 5/4/23 though and the course was hard and narrow fairways. The bunkers in front of the greens were high lipped and hard to get out of once you get into it. The greens were well maintained. In my opinion there was too much rough around the fairways as well as the beginning of where the fairways start. Overall a great course and you better have your irons dialed in as well as your slice or hook under control.lost about 2 dozen balls. Wonderful experience.
Nice challenging Course
Nice challenging Course, unfortunately the weather not so good when we were there,
We booked on Friday and they were closed, but no notice !
Please at least text us to let us know if close.
Then we booked back on Sunday but not in good condition and we lost a lot of balls 😛
Anyway it was fun !
A Dye course
Muddy conditions, helps with target golf if you can hit the target . The surroundings are the highlight, compliments a vacation to Hawaii. Off course amenities closed. Pace of play slowed back nine.
Jungle golf
Beautiful course that eat your balls. Lush and well kept up despite the jungle like nature.. greens are slow and practice facilities need help.. incredible views! And nice people. Worth the trip
Jurraic Park x Golf!
More amazing that words! This is THE track to play on Oahu! OG Pete Dye design and then redesigned by Greg Normand (I think) it has everything! Stunning views, tricky hole design, just fun and beautiful! Bring balls! One foot off the fairway is lost!
