Unique, fun, challenging and slower than a story about riding a giant Galapagos turtle on a glacier made of molasses as read by Ben Stein
Staff greeted us immediately in the parking lot. Then took our clubs away rather quicky so if you plan on pounding beers at this course be prepared right away to stuff them into your bag because there is no chance you'll be able to sneak a little cooler by these people. The key is putting the beer in your bag ahead of time, then on hole number two you simply transfer it to the cooler which comes equipped on the cart.
The staff was not pretentious or snooty at all (which I deal with more often than others simply because i look like i'm in my 20s still). Staff was very friendly.
The golf cart was one of these high tech rigs, so that was definitely a plus (GPS, cooler with water, tee's). They had a free driving range conveniently located next the 1st teebox.
Course was in great shape for late September. Although the greens were aereated, this is probably also why we got a half priced round. Would love to go back and see how these greens are in peak season. Tough pin placements and lots of slope made putting challenging but it sure was fun. Lots of funky greens built into the landscape which I personally like but I could see how others could get frustrated quickly.
Fairways were beautiful and perfect. First cut of rough was very manageable. Bunkers were fluffed up and well taken care of.
Some tee boxes were better than others, but overall they were in great shape. At points, the course is absolutely stacked on top of each of other. And during a busy day, this is not fun. It's not fun to CONSTANTLY be looking around to slow or stop the cart as people were putting or teeing off. I gave up with this practice by the 6th hole. I know this will sound rude, but if a tournament isn't going on, than a I really don't give a hoot about being quiet while you miss your double bogey putt. Life goes on. Let's play some golf and then get back to Mohegan to gamble.
This is main complaint: how the heck do yo guys start so many people at once? You can't be hurting for the money that bad if your charging people around $100 per round. For the love of god, please consider delaying some tee times. In your defense the group ahead of us was very bad and very slow with almost no consideration to the pace of play. But they never asked to let us play through, nor had a notion to do so. That's what your starter/marshall is for. The group ahead of us held up the WHOLE COURSE. Must have been a dozen groups behind us all playing the same 5.5 hour round. Unacceptable. I shot like garbage cause of it. Very hard to play well when your taking sometimes up to fifteen minutes in between shots. You'd think that after taking 14 practice swings you'd get your shot down but it doesn't always work that way. Thank god we snuck beer out there or we woulda been very bored.
Despite the stacked-ness, the holes themselves were amazing. Never seen anything like it. Those two par 5's on the front were the best two consecutive holes i've ever played. Very unique course.
In the end, this course has almost enough to get me back. The pace really put a damper on things. Oh and i forgot to mention that we played on a Monday at noon.
Stunning improvements
This is one of the few resort courses in New England that has actually made a meaningful investment and improvement in their course. Definitely one of CT best public courses
Construction
The bunkers are under construction. The ones that were in play were great! Real Golf sand. The only downside that day was all the work being done. With that said, everything else was terrific! Can't wait to go back when completed!
No starter after 3:00
The course was just okay. Greens aerated, some holes had greens that were a bit rough, hadn’t been cut. Some holes were certainly beautiful. However, we had a tee time for 4. The starter came up to me at 3:15 and said “go when you’re supposed to” then literally left the course. It was the slowest round I’ve played in the last 10 seasons. In front of us were two groups, a twosome followed by a man, his 13-14 yr old son, and his 6-7 yr old daughter. Both groups were dropping extra balls, taking far too long to look for balls, and playing as slowly as I’ve seen almost ever. How does that starter leave? How do you not have a ranger? It was almost 7:00 by the time we got done with the 10 holes we played. If we had stayed we wouldn’t have finished due to darkness. You could play there, but don’t do it after 4pm.
HAS GREAT POTENTIAL
This course could be really great if they put some money into upkeep and maintenance. 12th hole was closed for renovation and at least 3-4 more holes should be redone and ongoing bunker work which would help make it a true resort course. Now it's just an overall average muni.
Sky Bear was pretty cool though.
Pleasantly surprised
Pretty course , couple of signature holes, lots of interest.
Mohegan sun, ⛳
Course was in good shape, one hole I think was#12, out of commission for now,,but looks like it's about ready to go,! Got paired with another twosome,, worked out great,
Great Hot Deal
Course was in great shape (12th hole was under construction and closed). Staff was excellent. Course is very fair. The layout is great.
Great Track. Work being done tho.
Played June 13 2023. Some work is being done on the course. The 3rd green is now open and looks great and much fairer than the original roller coaster. 12th hole was still closed as of this review. Rest of the course was in great shape tee to green. The new bunkers look and play great. When it’s all finished it’s going to be amazing. But still worth playing.
Fun course
Tee to green was in great shape. Bunkers need a lot of work. A couple of really funky holes, and a couple of sneaky water hazards but otherwise it’s all laid out in front of you. We’d go back again… on a hot deal only.
Getting Better
Played last July the course was in repair. This time there were 2 temporary greens and 1 hole closed.
I should have been warned that the course was still under repair, not happy with Golf Now or Tee Off where I booked the 4some.
call before for course conditions
2 temp greens, lot of mud and yuck. For $40 hot deal ypu might do it if you lived nearby, but my crew drove way too far for an unadvertised disappointment.
Enjoyable
Over the years we've played the course many times and try to return at least once per season. Playable layout for the average weekend golfer. Conditions are good considering how dry it's been. Speedy and true greens. Pace of play sometimes could be better. We'll return!
