Round 2 @Makaha
Went smoothly didn't have to wait for people to play. Last visit the wait was very long.
fantastic experience
great, friendly, professional customer focused staff. love the culture and all of the 'locals". greens were amazing, fast, but "true". had a great experience. loved playing with larry, mike and victor (best printing, Honolulu) all locals. will be playing with victor on my next visit
tough course
If long hitter you can reach a lot of the par 4 with your drive .But don't get fooled the greens are tough .everything breaks toward the ocean no matter what . Had a blast on this course will play it again
Everything breaks towards the ocean.
Everything breaks towards the ocean. Putting raises the difficulty level ALOT. But it's a beautiful course with great views.
Makaha Vistas
We were not expecting much from this course based on what we had heard from others but we were pleasantly surprised. This is clearly an old course that is going through a re-birth. You can tell the staff is trying hard but the budget must be very tight (like so many courses today). We will be back to play this beautiful layout.
Makaha Calley CC
Beautiful views on a good course that can be challenging. The trade winds can make the course challenging. The course is well maintained.
windy and wet
the wind (25-35mph) gives this course a whole new look- a fun round.
This course is for any level of golf skills
Views are spectacular from any hole. The course is not very long but is filled with challenging features.
The cart paths are in very poor condition with pot holes and bumps, are not good for your back and need to be repaired urgently. It's better to ride on grass than the cart paths.
Beautiful scenic holes
Played 12 holes before a downpour...looking forward to playing 18 holes....
Great value and wonderful views
The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately the driving range was closed for a little while prior to our round, however we did have a chance to use the driving range following our round. Carts in great condition. Greens all fall to the ocean, and can be tricky. Traps were challenging due to the consistency of the sand/clay mix. The layout offered interesting and fair approach locations. I will definitely play this course again, and focus on placing the ball below the hole. The false fronts can truly fool the approach shots into the wind. It is worth the drive from Honolulu.
Interesting ... Mixed Review
Makaha Valley is a mixed bag ... a course that's obviously been around a while, and appears to have suffered from a lack of maintenance funding for some years ... Yet it's an interesting layout, not bad for its era, and despite the overall "facility fatigue," the course plays better than it looks. Tee boxes, fairways & rough are decent, and greens are much better than expected (don't be fooled by the somewhat shabby practice green!).
Beautiful Day
Staff was very friendly and considering the previous night's rain the course was very well drained and playable. Tough to read greens but overall challenging but fair.
Lovely setting
We enjoyed our round, but might not have enjoyed it so much if we had not been able to play the front 9 twice. It was pretty slow for a twosome on the front, but we were able to replay the front and it was great. Staff are very personable.
Fun challenge on the West side
I love this course. It is not especially long but it is tricky. The greens are especially challenging. Great views of the Makaha valley and always an exciting round of golf.
Good for Hawaii
I think I am spoiled by Fraser Valley golf. Their was nothing "bad" or wrong about the course; staff were nice, greens were in good shape, and enough dog legs / shot placement holes to make it a good track...it just wasn't stellar. Views are awesome on a few of the holes. The drive from Ko lina was worth the time. A marshall could have improved pace of play considerably. Overall 3out of 5.
Good course with no delays
This course is a 45 minute drive from Waikiki Beach. It is worth the drive if you enjoy uncrowded and fast play golf.
Older course nice to play
As the name says, Makaha Valley. You're in a valley with green walls all around. The setting is beautiful. Course conditions were pretty good but could have been better. Worst part was the cart path..you need a kidney belt if you stay on the cart path through the entire round! We drove near the edge of the path and it was much better. Place has been bought out by Pacific Links and they're supposed to be refurbishing the course. For now the price for a round makes it a good deal. We play this course every time we come to this island and it has the feel that it belongs to the locals.
Amazing setting and the course layout offers all kinds of challenges. I golfed today, 11-13-13 and found the course very dry, fairways sparse.
Course needs tender loving care. More water for the greens and fairways as grass is quite sparse. However still a very pleasant track to play. Suggest you book thru Golfnow as the local fees a little steep for the current conditions.
Course needs some attention and management
It was my first time to play at this course. The course condition was OK with quite a lot of weed. The green was in good shape. The cart path is in very poor shape. It is clear that this course has not been properly maintained for some time. The pace of the first nine holes was good. When arrived at Hole #10, we were backed up with 4 groups of twosome (Japanese tourists) in front. The pace of play came to a crawl. The course ranger was nowhere to be found. It was a frustrating back nine. I will not return to this course nor I recommend this course to my friends.
Worth the drive!
I've been meaning to make the long drive up to Makaha for many years. Got a good deal from Golf Now for 49 bucks so I did it. The course was in good shape, on par with Waikele, Hawaii Prince, etc. Played alone so I blew thru the front nine in 70 minutes then ran into some groups on the back. Did a replay in 2 hours and 10 minutes. 36 holes in 5 hours! Now that's the way to play golf!!! Anyway, back to the course....fun track, not too difficult, just stay out of the trees.
PS. the cart paths have huge potholes (much like the streets in the mid-west after winter) and tree roots lifting them up. Do not drive on them. Your spine will appreciate it, your drinks will stay in your cup, and your clubs will have a better chance of staying on your cart.
