Poor Weekend Golf Experience
This course is a bit further than I typically like to venture for an early afternoon round, but I wanted to give it a shot for my second visit.
My arrival to the pro shop about 20 minutes before my tee time was met with an empty pro shop and it wasn’t until a cart boy noticed me waiting inside until he was able to get someone from the staff to come to the pro shop to check me in. The lady who checked me in asked for my golf now reservation number, something I’ve never been asked for in over 100 rounds of golf at various courses using Golfnow.
She got me my cart key and told me I could head over to the first tee as their starter had gone home for the day. I warmed up on the putting green for a few minutes before teeing off, only to realize there was another single ahead of me and then a foursome.
I ended up pairing up with the other single, but then we hit a roadblock of slow play by the foursome ahead of us, and when we tried to slow down a bit, there was then another group catching up to us and several other smaller groups behind them that jammed up the course. While slow weekend golf is the norm, they needed to have a starter to create pairings vs just letting people head out and then hit a roadblock with a slower group out there.
I only played 9 before calling it quits as the slow play and colder temps made it an unpleasant experience.
Some hole tees and greens were slushy wet
A few holes had wet slushy tees and greens. The grass on the rough hills was too high and caused some lost balls even though they were in bounds, we couldn't find them.
Usual
Course played great, even on Sunday. Rough something to consider if you’re in it.
Windy City
Golf club of IL is a good course with some tough holes. One being a 600 yard par 5. The greens aren’t in the best shape but it’s early. Has a few water hazards that come into play. This makes the 18th hole a lot tougher. I would definitely play again
Rude staff
Rude staff. Great if you potentially like to walk 18. Apparently the staff doesn’t like to bring carts out for last minute tee time bookings. Played over 50 rounds here in my lifetime and once loved it, It was my go to golf course for taking out customers, but because of a recent encounter with the staff, I will never go there again. *Paid In Full*

Meh
If you are concerned about Covid, this place is not for you. Nobody wearing a mask inside the clubhouse. Customers, employees, nobody. I guess pandemics don’t exist in Algonquin. The course itself was in decent shape for November, so that’s cool. Also, the homeowners that live on the golf course. Not sure where to start here. A father/son combo was out in their backyard stopping every group to tell people to stop hitting their house with golf balls. Telling multiple groups to golf at other courses. Friendly people..... seemed like a sad attempt at a cash grab. I would like to go back to this course just to take aim at their house. Next time I won’t miss.
Long but fair course
Play the right tees. Course is much fairer with the fescue mowed down on the mounds. Still great mix of long and short holes. All the short holes have bunker or water to protect them..and the greens are larger, so need to take that into account.
Core Aeration
Call before you book. Usually a nice course however they aerated and sanded the greens so it was like putting on bumpy asphalt. A waste of a round due to maintenance. I would avoid this course for at least two weeks.
Wide Fairways
This course has a great and challenging layout. Even though some of the holes might be a little long for the average golfer, the wide fairways on the longer holes will make it easy to lay up and still make the par. There are also some shorter holes that you may think are easy, but the course layout makes these the most challenging holes at GCI. Their greens dept. does a great job of having the greens and fairways well manicured. This course was much harder when there was a lot of fescue on the course, but the removal of that makes it easier to play. I would recommend this course because it is a course with a variety of holes and great risk-reward opportunities.
