Now public with a new name
Shawnee is now The Rookery North and open to the public.. Same facility with a name change effective March 2012. Mature parkland style course, built 50 years ago and expanded a few years later.
Bermuda fairways are not extremely broad but are not US Open narrow, either. They are over-seeded with a rye for early season color but brown out a bit in summer heat. Do not expect a lot of roll on the drive. Undulating Greens are not large and a touch faster than the average public course. Fairways bunkers are well-placed challenges for the average golfer. Greenside bunkers require getting the ball up as well as out. Grip it and rip it types need to bring their get-out-of-tree-trouble shots as most fairways are lived with mature pine/oak trees.
This course does not get a lot of play; one could walk in and be on the 1st tee in minutes from about noon on. Tip: get the "bag" of ~30+ practice balls for $4.00 for a warm-up. I can get around in 3.5 hours on foot. Cost is average for the outer reaches of the DE/MD seashore area. Staff friendly and cordial. Restaurant/grille area maintains the private club setting. beverage cart runs on weekends only.
Rookery North
Love this course. Some greens were pretty rough. Still enjoyed the round. Too bad this course is closing at the end of December.
Play here before it’s too late
Great round for the price. Sorry to hear the course is closing this year. This was my first round in DE so glad it was this track. Great bones .. you can tell this was once a private course. Great practice facility. If I had a few bucks, I’d buy the place and keep it open. Sucks for locals and HS team who live at this course. Hopefully the town will find a way to keep it going. Try to play before it’s too late!!
Old Traditional Course
Considering the impending closure of this course (at the end of the year), it was in pretty good shape... fairways were well maintained; though there were some rough spots on most greens. Pace of play was ok for front 9 but suddenly slowed considerably when the foursome in front of us became a "fivesome" on the back. We saw the Ranger on the front 9 but not the back...
No control of tee times. Late starts backing up the next tee times and allowing people to start on hole 10 messing up those already on the course. No rangers or staff on the course.
Choose somewhere else
Beautiful location, but the course conditions are atrocious. Badly diseased greens. Tee boxes are all beat up.
Very disappointed in course conditions
Course did not live up to other reviews that I've read. Most greens were in rough shape. Sand traps had not been maintained in some time. For the weather that we've had this season the course should have been in much better shape.
Nice course
nice old course near the city limits. Well kept with good layout. Course in good condition. Clubhouse a bit seedy, could use update. Staff friendly.
The pace of play was very slow. It took 2:50 to play front 9 holes. We only were able to play 14 holes before it got dark. Very disappointed that a ranger didn’t come around to speed several slow groups up. The only thing they cared about was taking our money.. Do not recommend playing in summer.
Save your money and play elsewhere
The title says it all. The greens were in very poor shape. I would play elsewhere if given the choice. There are other courses of better quality and value then here. Save your time and money.
