West at White Pines Golf Course
About
Situated just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, White Pines Golf Club has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The club offers two courses, the East and the West. The West Course is longer than the East by 400 yards and considered slightly more challenging. The layout is relatively tight and there is an abundance of trees, which means you'll need to be accurate to do well. The greens are large and challenging with difficult-to-read breaks. There is also minimal, but strategic bunkering along the greensides. The fairways provide plenty of variety with some that are narrow and heavily tree-lined and others that are wide with no trees in sight. The golf course has several challenging holes but it's forgiving enough for beginners to approach with confidence.

Chanllenging
Played it for the 1st time, narrow on most holes, with moderate trees, not terrible if you get into the woods and can play an escape 8 well, I hit the lumber a few times, but that's golf, take the challenge drop a stroke and move on, discrete placed water in front of the 10th caught my rocket 6 iron shot, again 1st time playing, again from the black tees. Scored fair, the course is in great shape, 6$ buckets for the range 30 balls was perfect to loosen up before the round, 2 courses, and plenty of chipping area.
dump
This course should plowed under for a housing development! $50.00 to play this place is $50.00 to much... The municipality should be ashamed to present such an awful product, they need to step aside and let a management company or private entity run the club.
Great value! Course conditions are great for the price
Letting it go
Staff was rude and course is not well cared for. I think due to its location in an area with sting population they will get all the rounds they need without taking care of the place.
Good value, good pace
Course was in great shape, although decent amount of unrepaired ball marks on the greens - I did my best to repair any I saw, could tell most were fresh so not the course’s fault. Aside from the 2 guys we were paired with, the pace was pretty solid by Chicago standards (more on that later). Hot day and the cart girl circled around plenty, which was great. Played the west course and nothing too crazy about the layout. I preferred the front 9 over the back, but either way it was a solid round and great value for the money - will be back.
Pace of play: (before you read on, the pace was pretty solid at White Pines, so kudos to the club) Having lived and golfed in the greater Chicago area for a couple years now, I’m convinced the locals are not taught the phrase “ready golf”, which explains why 4 hrs 30 mins is considered a “fast” round in this state. Sure, you can blame the tee times being <10 mins apart and rangers for not regulating the bottlenecks, but the amount of time our group (2 randoms we paired with) spent looking for their balls in the fescues or on the edge of the water, standing around waiting for others to walk up to their ball before hitting their own, taking mulligans on in-play shots, etc. was very unfortunate. (I have nothing against breakfast balls or the occasional mulligan if no one is behind you, but there is a limit.) I tried offering free drops, telling them to go ahead and hit out of turn if they’re ready, and each time they looked at me like I was insane. We’re not on tour, we’re not playing for money, we’re here to have fun and get home in less than 6 hours (same as everyone else who is golfing behind us). All that said, we did finish in just over 4 1/2 hours which again, by Chicago standards is a win. But if people had a bit more self awareness and played “ready golf”, we would’ve been done in 4:15 at the MOST. So, kudos to White Pines for at least allowing the possibility of a 4-hr round! Cheers.
Great Value
The course is in good shape except for the bunkers which are pretty much hard pan on hotter days. They make you double up on carts which can be a pain but understandable on high volume weekends. Pace of play slow but that’s the case at most puck i courses on the weekend. Overall you can’t beat the price for 18 so you can live with the not so good stuff.
Excellent course
Started on 10 but never had anyone in front of us and only a twosome behind us. It was a great day.
Great experience
Friendly staff, course was in good condition, and pace was decent for a public course
Wonderful outing
Played the East course and had a wonderful time. Perfect weather; pace of play was good but we never felt rushed; staff was helpful - and not just spotty, but everyone we interacted with. Course was in good shape. Will definitely play again!
