beautifully difficult golf course
beautifully difficult course, excellent greens and generally in excellent shape, pace of play is ok , slow today because it was cart path only, staff is excellent
Simply one of the best you can play in GA
Perfect day on a stellar course. Greens running true and very fast. Course conditions excellent. With the $37 Senior Rate it's almost impossible to beat. The only negative is the pace of play. It was a 5 hour round. But when the track is this nice, you don't care as much.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write your kind review. We are sorry the pace of play was not where it should have been the day you played. We are blessed with a lot of play on our course, but that can lead to slower playing conditions on the busiest days. We are thankful that you consider our senior rate a great value, even with the slow play. We will continue to do our best to keep our rounds to 4.5 hours or less.
UGA Welcome Home Round!!
Well I had the pleasure of playing UGA's Golf Course for the very first time. I'm a UGA Alum and thoroughly enjoyed my round on Saturday, February 24th. I found a last minute deal on Golf Now. Once arriving at the course, check in was very easy and the staff was friendly. I let the Pro Shop know that I'm an Alum and was able to procure the Alumni weekend rate. Pro Shop was filled with all the UGA Paraphernalia that you can want for a Golfer. I purchased the Yardage Book and also a Switchblade Divot tool as well.
Once I finished up in the Pro Shop, I proceeded to the get my cart and head over to the Driving Range to warm up. The Range facilities were in excellent shape and the range attendant directed me to the 2 Chipping areas along with the space to warm up. Once I was finished on the Range, headed over to the 1st Tee to check in with the Ranger.
I was paired with a threesome who had played the course before and gave me tips on the various holes as we played the round. The pace of play was excellent (we only had to wait once on the Par 3 on the Back 9) as some golfers were Walking and others were using the carts. I noticed immediately that the first few holes were a warm up and the challenges of the course presented itself. You definitely have to be precise on your Tee shots and (IMO) take what the course gives you. I met a great group of guys playing my round and had an excellent time!!
My advice is to book a round at UGA and have fun. I will definitely return with my normal playing crew or even Solo. Always good to come home to Athens!
Thanks for your great review! We are glad you finally got to play your collegiate course. We hope you plan to play our course again the next time you are 'home' in Athens!
Pristine greens in January!
Wow. Haven’t played the UGA club since last year and they have made great strides improving their greens for 2018. They were rolling around at least a 10 or 11 and were so smooth. The rest of the course is in fine condition as expected with the dead Bermuda everywhere else. The greens were the best part of the course today and I only wish they would overseed more of the course since they did an excellent job. I love coming to play here and I’ll be back soon!
Thank you very much for your positive review. Our maintenance staff will be very glad to hear your comments on the greens....they are very talented and super dedicated in the way they take care of the golf course. Overseeding bermuda grass is a tricky proposition in our climate. We overseeded the entire golf course in 2010 and 2011 and the results were stunning, but we found that the ryegrass overseed was weakening our bermuda. That resulted in difficult transitions in June and a thinner than desired bermuda grass stand during the first part of the summer. We decided overseeding was too stressful on the overall health of our bermuda grass to keep doing it. I hope that helps your understanding of our situation. Thank you again for your great review!
Awesome as always
The course was in excellent shape even this time of year. Greens rolled great - some pins were very challenging. Don’t let your ego choose your tee box. It plays long at any level.
Great course especially when on a hot deal or twilight package.
Fun, but tough course
Amazing course. My only recommendation is to have the staff to check on the pace of play.
This is a gem of a course
This course is in great shape. The tee boxes have grass the fairways and rough are perfect. The greens are the best we have played. I will be back to place this course again soon. Everyone there was very friendly and practice area is great.
This is a real golf course
Never played here? Play. Ever wonder why there are so many PGA Tour players from UGA? Play here and you'll understand.
To play this course exceptionally well requires you to work the ball both ways. However, if you are smart, on the holes where the bend doesn't fit your natural ball flight, you'll not let the total distance of the hole frighten you, and you'll stick with your "go to" tee shot, which might mean you club down. What? You thought I said you have to work the ball both ways. Right. But, most really good players favor a fade or draw, and if you are on a tee that demands a shot shape that is not "go to" you will club down, accept a longer club to the green, and rely on a tight short game. This is that golf course. Demanding at every turn.
Every par4/5 has a runway strip of fairway. Hitting that strip is imperative. If not, you're in medium length bermuda rough and no bargain. Very few holes are straight away and in short, I'd say this is one of the most challenging [public] courses you can play in the state. I've played most of the best public and private courses in Georgia and this is one of the absolute best pure "golf" experiences, where you'll use every club and every shot. Seriously, this is on par with the Highlands course at Atlanta Athletic Club, except that the greens at AAC are sick, and the greens here are not.
I'm very good and I will only play here every so often, because it really exposes any weakness, and it is somewhat infuriating. Especially when you miss fairway after fairway. Here's what I say to myself before I get to the first tee. "Today I have to understand that I will likely hit only 6 or 7 fairways. Hitting a fairway is a perfect lie and a treat. Take advantage of the opportunity when you're in the fairway. Missing a fairway is why I play the game. I'm going to need to pitch and chip the ball well to keep my score going." If I don't say this, I'm playing with false expectations and will always be disappointed in myself. If I do, I know what to expect, which is to rely on my short game. If you expect to be pitching and chipping the ball, you'll look forward to the chances. If you don't, you'll be cursing yourself constantly.
The one bummer is that the regulars that play here do NOT repair their ball marks and despite the staff's desire to have perfect greens, many local yocals ruine what could literally be a perfect tour quality golf course to all that play here.
Great track, a lot of construction and clean up of trees after the storm. Enjoyed the course.
Poor Conditions Poor Customer Service
We played here on Sunday and was charged 70.00 to find out they had poorly punched and sanded the greens. So we asked why no discount and we were told " if we lower the price it will bring more people out to play and the greens won't recover. By keeping the price up hopefully it will keep people away and let the greens recover ". Needless to say we were floored by that response. Me nor anyone in my group will ever be back.
You should definitely give it another shot. The UGA greens are perfect 80% of the year. They get plenty of play so I don't doubt the reasoning for not discounting rates.
Beautiful day on the course.
Beautiful day and the course was in good condition except greens had been aerated and sanded within the last few days. Length was challenging but fair.
Hmassey
Excellent course and staff. Can't wait to come back. Love golf now
Awesome course
Great design, each hole requires total concentration
Best course in Athens
Challenging but straight forward , great condition and out around proper golf course
Thank you for your kind review. Cart path only does slow things down for us and we apologize for that. Thankfully our course drains very well, so it is rare to see cart path only for more than a day or two after a heavy rain. Hope to see you at the course again soon!
