About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Lanier Golf Club in Cumming is a public championship course that is located just a half hour north of Atlanta. Opened in 1970, the course has undergone many renovations over the years that have increased the playability of the original layout. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels but it still offers a challenge, which is why in its past it has been chosen as a Georgia Amateur qualifying and U.S. Open qualifying course. There are tall trees along the fairways that will require a bit of accuracy and a heavy smattering of strategically placed bunkers also present a challenge. The occasional water hazard also comes into play. In addition to the golf course, Lanier G.C. has a driving range and short-game practice area that is open to the public as well.

Fun course to play
Fun course to play and I enjoyed it with my service dog, but he didn’t putt very well.
Lanier Golf Course
Very nice course, very good greens. Will definitely golf there again real soon.
A really nice course - hidden gem
Might want to play this course soon. It is in great shape, but up for sale also - it may not be around to play one day... Wish I had the money to purchase,
and restore everything - would make a great club
with a little more parking, and upgraded club house.
The greens are in nearly perfect condition IMHO...
Nice Comeback
I wrote a very well deserved critical review of this course in 2014. I will have to say, this course has made a very nice comeback. It was always a track with some interesting holes. Not very long but lots of elevation changes and the need to hit most clubs in the bag. The upkeep on the course was horrible when I was there last. Recent positive reviews convinced me to give the place another shot. I'm glad I did. There has been a complete turnaround. Greens are almost perfect. They are quick and roll true. Saw a few maintenance workers on the course which is encouraging. Pace of play - 4:15 on Saturday morning. Only two complaints: Bunkers are a little thin and the clubhouse and carts are dated. I can live with that though if they can keep the golf course in good shape. I can recommend Lanier Golf Club for the time being. I hope they can keep it up!
Pace is important
I have been frequenting this course on and off for about 3 years now and truly enjoy it. This course has some challenging fairways/greens that require specific shot shapes so you have to be on your game to shoot well. For a non private course the greens are quick, especially downhill/downgrain.
The only issue i continue to see is group/pace of play management. My group of 3 tee'd off at 10am and did not finish the 18th whole until 3:15pm...it took over 5 hours for a 3some to complete the round due to how backed up it was. This was mainly caused by the amount of singles and twosome groups that are being sent off. For better pace of play (and generally to avoid waiting almost 10 minutes between each shot) the course should really only send out groups of 3 or 4 on the weekends.
All in all, i love the course and will continue to play here but management should start enforcing pace of play as much as possible.
Great Greens
The greens are a pure as you will find at a public course.
Hanging in there.
Sad to see this great layout going away. The fairways & greens are surviving, but the bunkers are in dire need of sand and repair. Unfortunately the present ownership is not investing any more money then they have too. I hope somehow the course survives and can be brought back to what it used to be.
Course needs some love
I've played Lanier for the past few years and you can see how it is struggling to maintain the level of a top tier course that it had in years past. The practice facility has really gone down hill... grass in the bunkers, distressed putting green, etc. The cart path to the practice facility has been in bad shape for years... really needs to be paved, which has to be as hard on the carts as it was on my back. The clubhouse seems empty, with little furniture. The course itself is in pretty good shape, though the water (or lack thereof) in the ponds was alarming and unattractive... rarely seen the water level that low. The greens rolled well, though. The staff was friendly and welcoming. I really hate to say anything negative, as I'm sure that more patrons would help provide the money the course needs for improvements. But as it stands right now... it needs some love.
Greens excellent
This course is hanging on to compete with the private courses so they don't invest a lot inthe course. However, the greens and are in excellent condition which makes the course playable.
Did not enjoy this course
This course is not well cared for. Grass thick in fairways. Not worth anything over $20 greens fee
Greens Maintenance in Progress
I recently played Lanier GC and provided a more detailed review. The greens have been sanded since my latest review. These greens need a little time to settle in and normal cutting to resume.
Best Condition in Recent Memory, Nearly 4-Stars
Lanier GC is not a highly-manicured course, but the playing conditions are very good. The greens are outstanding. The only conditioning issues are the 13th tee box and the bunkers. Nearly all the bunkers needed grooming or some level of maintenance. The course was also clear of debris. I highly recommend this course. Better bunkers and Lanier GC gets 4-stars.
Note: I rate golf courses on an absolute scale using the following guidelines:
5 stars - Top tier golf course, all amenities, outstanding service/management and excellent course maintenance.
4 stars - Good to great course layout, complete club experience (full practice facilities, locker room, grill, etc...), efficient service/management, very good course maintenance.
3 stars - Good course layout, average practice facilities, average service/management, average course maintenance. No pace of play problems.
2 stars - Nothing special, but an enjoyable course to play. Only minor issues with pace of play.
1 star - Not worth the effort or serious pace of play issues. I take pace of play very seriously.
A 5-hour round is a minimum two-star reduction.
