Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Lanier Golf Club in Cumming is a public championship course that is located just a half hour north of Atlanta. Opened in 1970, the course has undergone many renovations over the years that have increased the playability of the original layout. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels but it still offers a challenge, which is why in its past it has been chosen as a Georgia Amateur qualifying and U.S. Open qualifying course. There are tall trees along the fairways that will require a bit of accuracy and a heavy smattering of strategically placed bunkers also present a challenge. The occasional water hazard also comes into play. In addition to the golf course, Lanier G.C. has a driving range and short-game practice area that is open to the public as well.

Only time for Lanier
This is an older course with a lot of deferred maintenance. The fairways and greens need irrigation. Lots of bare patches in the roughs. You would think the course would be lush after spring rains but it isn't. Pace of play was OK
Greens are rolling great!
The course is in decent shape. It was a little rough in some areas due to the storms this week (looks like they didn't have a chance to mow/clean up after the storms on Wednesday night. A few trees down around the course). The course is not being maintained as it has in the past. This is to be expected as the course may not exist in the next year or so. However, the greens are in good shape. They are fast and roll true, which is the most important thing to me. I love this course as I grew up playing it when it was private. Although it is not the test it used to be I still enjoy playing it when I can. I enjoy the layout and its a good mix of tough and relatively easy holes. As the weather gets better and the grass comes in in the fairways this course will be well worth the money.
Play While You Can
Decided to play Lanier before it closes at some point this year. Greeted warmly in the pro shop. Clubhouse was bare bones. Starter got us out before a couple of larger groups which was nice. Course was in decent condition, but obviously there is little maintenance since course will be closing in the near future due to development. Greens were lightning fast and challenging due to greens having 2 or 3 tiers. Nice, average little course. Too bad it will be closing to build houses. Play it while you can.
Greens Great.....
The greens are the highlight of what you get with Lanier. The rest of the course is in pretty rough shape. There is no difference between what is the fairway, and what is the rough. Weeds make up the bulk of the fairways which makes it tough to get a good lie. Lanier used to be a hidden gem for the price, but now with charging close to $50, definitely better options in North Atlanta. Top it all off with no beverage cart....
Had a great time!
From the time we arrived until we left it was a great time! The staff was great and very helpful! Can't wait to go back and play again!
Getting better
They finally have the greens in great shape. I like the layout and you can't beat the value. Pace of play due to first time golfers or maybe just bad golfers that don't know to let faster players play through slow the round down. Over all a fun and challenging course.
.......
greens are still rock hard, other than that avg course
A great tradition is dying
Saw a bunch of yellow signs around the course and when I asked, I was told thst Lanier may only have a couple months before it closes for good, sad as it is a great layout and a challenge to play. Word is it is going to be rezoned and turned into residential property. Greens are the best I have played as of late. Let's hope someone steps in and saves this track. In any case I suggest you give Lanier another round in the near future in case we loose this very playable course.
This course has lots of room for improvement
The greens have some kind of stuff sprayed on it you have a hard time chipping or putting that the ball keeps rolling forever! The course had hardly anybody playing but there was a team of six some playing that held everybody else back! Inconsiderate! Maybe the greens will be better in summer. Then it will be a better course. I will recommend people to wait.
Good Value
Course was in good shape. Greens were lightning fast. Fairway grass was sparse in a lot of fairways but I'm sure that was due to the time of year. The check in experience was excellent. The gentleman behind the counter was very friendly. My biggest complaint, and it is a big one, was that they let a fivesome play as a group in front of us. Multiple times during the round a marshall drove right past them without saying anying to them. Consequently, the round took much longer than it should have. What was worse, we were waiting on them for most of our shots, which to me makes the round unenjoyable. This will keep me from going back any time soon.
GREAT SHAPE
EVEN WITH THE SEVER DROUGHT, THE COURSE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE. THE GREENS WERE FAST AND CHALLENGING. I ONLY HOPE AND PRAY THIS COURSE REMAINS AND DOES NOT BECOME ANOTHER SUBDIVISION THAT IS CURRENTLY BEING PLANNED!
Old but works
I have played here numerous times and have never had a bad expierence. The clubhouse is not modern but the people that work in there are very nice. The putting green is not great but it's OK. The driving range is not great but if your not in a cart it will take forever to get there from the clubhouse. The course itself is nice. Personally my favorite hole is 12. The back nine is great especially the stretch of jokes from 11-16 not easy holes though. 17 is a good hole and so is 18 there is a good amount of water on this course and thick rough. If you are there get the BBQ sandwich.
Very challenging greens
Was impressed with the greens the fairways were a little hard a lot of tight lies but overall the course was in good shape. Staff was friendly at the club house but didn't have no cart girl. Great deal from Golf now looking forward to playing this course again.
Wonderful Surprise
Wonderful layout through the rolling hills. This is not a high dollar resort but a relaxing and challenging round of golf. Reminded me of Pinehurst 3 the way the fairways are open for easy drives but having a level lie is rare. The trees make you rethink shots. The greens are fast and very deceiving. Approach shot placement is critical. Old school greens, several two tiered greens, most well bunkered. Bunkers were in great shape. I'm very critical of dysfunctional bunkers. The fairways are dry but very playable for this time of the year. Hitting into the tree lines will likely require a provisional ball. Balls go in but the thicket is quite thick. This part of the country needs rain. The bar area is very clean and comfortable. Staff was very accommodating. Never saw any toilet facilities on the course. Maybe they were well hidden. If not, then this would be one criticism. Play this course for the pure enjoyment of playing golf. We become spoiled by carpet like fairways and giant flat greens where putts never break more than a foot. This course will bring out the golfer in you.
Was Ok not great
Ground is hard and course is not well maintained. For the price its worth driving up to Hampton golf course for same or less rates
Course has nice layout
The course is extremely golfer friendly. The layout is excellent and fun to play. The fairways are extremely dry right now.
