Beautiful course....awful staff
We played this course mainly because we wanted to see it based on all the positive reviews it has received. Of course I realize a review can be biased according to isolated events that don't truly paint a real picture of the entire experience. So here's my disclaimer....maybe we just picked the wrong day to visit or it was because we used golf now to book our tee time. I say that because the course was not crowded at all so a tee time wasn't necessary, but right off the bat we got the "thief" treatment when we checked in. I've read reviews by other people who get the same treatment at other courses just because they used golf now. Just don't ask how to get to the 1st tee!!!!! Lol. Course was beautiful...it was challenging from the back tees but mainly because the greens are so grainy. And we loved that the course makes you think not just grab ur driver and hit it down the middle. Then making the turn we watched someone else get the same treatment we got just trying to give the course their money and ask directions to the 1st tee. ?? I just don't get it. Why does such a great course hire people who hate the very people who are paying their salaries? Hate to be negative but the course has nothing on Little Ocmulgee and the staff at Little Ocmulgee is very appreciative. Also Southern Hills is lined with houses so your not gonna ever feel like your getting away which I know doesn't bother a lot of people. Finished our round and went back in the pro shop and witnessed another customer making the mistake of asking the young man running the pro shop a question. I'm sorry but just because Golf Digest mentions your name doesn't mean a dang thing to my money. Which apparently Southern Hills doesn't want.
Southern Hills
This course never disappoints! Best course in South Georgia
Great course
Enjoyed this course tee to green. Greens were in great condition. One of the nicest courses in the middle ga area.
Great Course
As usual course was in Great shape, it's my favorite course to play in Middle Georgia. If you haven't played Southern Hills you need to try it.
Best in Middle Georgia
This course is always well maintained. The fairways are always green and lush and the greens are fast and challenging.
The bar at the 19th hole is well stocked and the bartender is exceptionally friendly.
If I lived closer to the course, I would make it my every day course.
Great course
1st time play This course. Was in great condition even after getting 2inches of rain in the last 24 hours. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The fairways were in great shape. The greens were slightly slow due to recent rainfall but were challenging. I will definitely play this course again. Lots of holes to have to use course management. Great value for the money tooGr
elevations and vistas
Traveling south on I-75 from Michigan, my wife and I played a round. Enjoyed it so much stayed in the area and played the next day also. Greens, fairways and bunkers in great shape.
Can be played long or short and each hole has a very different challenge from each of the 4 tees. Large greens so watch pin placement carefully. Also watch fairway pitch and elevations.
Would Definitely Play Again
Granted this was my first outing of the year and I forgot how challenging and how diverse Southern Hills truly is. My first time playing the course in 2012 was pretty good, but I was seasoned. This time around I was rusty, inconsistent and the course made me pay for it.
It's a very hilly course so unless you're training for a marathon, walking should not be an option. The greens and fairways were dewy the entire time which probably meant the sprinklers were ran that morning as well. Sand traps were wet as well, but the sand wasn't compacted so you could still get under the ball. Pace of play was a bit rushed (mostly due to my bad play) until the group in front of me ran into a fivesome (which should be banned in my opinion) in front of them around the 13th hole and we started dragging.
The staff were very friendly and patient with me whenever I needed something repeated (their cart setup is a bit unusual compared to other courses around the area). The members are also nice (at least the ones I played with) as are the facilities. There's a plethora of food and beverage choices.
I will say the downside is the price, but given the quality that's available compared to other courses it's not terrible. The facilities are nice and have a bit of a private country club feel to them while still being a public course.
Overall I would definitely recommend this course to someone who's already had a few rounds under their belt during the season. It's not a beginner's course and definitely not where you want to start your golf season as you will lose golf balls easily. Still, the course is beautiful, quiet and spacious. It's definitely a must play.
A Good value for the money
Course was very wet, a drainage system would help this course out tremendously. The greens were the highlight of the round and the pace of play was very good; we finished in less than 4 hours.
enjoy
I enjoyed this course. It was a challenge but if hit right still possible to score low.
Terrific
This course is well worth the drive I believe it to be the best value in middle Georgia. The Fairways and greens were good even in the dead of winter. The Traps had real sand in them. No clay or dirt. The practice areas were the best I've seen anywhere in Georgia. The course was much better than what I expected.
Even Frost Cannot Hold Southern Hills Down
Shared a cold MLK Day (for Central Georgia) round with 3 friends. When the frost cleared we began our round. The course was in great condition. We decided to play the white tees and found them challenging even with the slightly reduced yardage. The tee boxes and greens were nicely mowed and beautifully green.
The grass on the fairways was dormant but noticeably well cared for.
The starter was on the scene to get these moving on. The Pro Shop had our GolfNow reservations and we experienced no issues checking in. The restaurant/bar was clean and ready with snacks when we made the turn. The clubhouse was clean.
We have played at Southern Hills numerous times. The course never fails to meet expectations and good deals can be found. Great course.
Worth the drive
Greens always a challenge & in excellent condition. Scenery could be nicer that's why overall rating of only 4. Worth thedrive from Macon.
Awesome course
This course is always in good condition. Greens are slick. Not a super long course. Every hole has unique character. The back 9 has several risk reward holes. Best value for the money in middle ga.
Very nice course
This is a very nicely layed out golf course that is in very good condition. The bermuda greens were excellent. Tees were good. Fairways were excellent also.
Just had one problem..slow play and no way to fix it. There was no ranger to speed up play or suggest to a slow foursome to allow faster 2-somes to go around. The foursome in front of the twosome in front of me were behind by a hole and half at the turn. And it never got addressed by anyone from the club.
Like they say on the PGA broadcasts;"While we're young."
I can understand an occasional slowness, but this was just not right. I just can't understand a 4.75 hour round of golf in the middle of the week at 1PM.
Don't get me wrong, I will return to Southern Hills Plantation and Golf Club. It's too nice not to come back.
course is in great shape
Southern hills is a 5 star rated course for a reason come and play you will not be disappointed.
hidden gem!
Course is always in great shape, staff is always friendly! ! My experience was heightened by the fact I had a hole n one !!
Best Course Around
Southern Hills is one of the best courses in the area. Its also one of the best courses for the money. The greens run very true. The fairways are in great shape. And the layout is challenging. Overall, great course.
Great Course
Anyone in the area should play this course, Great Fairways and Greens !!!!!!!!!!!!
The comment about houses lining the course is totally wrong. There are a few houses on the course, but no hole is "lined" with them. Most houses are near the tee boxes and not in play. At least half the holes have no houses at all! You can verify this for yourself at Google Maps. SH is a great, fun course.
It sounds like someone got their period the day they booked their tee time. Matt Tom and Now Buster are 3 of the most helpful and courteous people you will meet.
