Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Gateway in Great Shape
Played on a Thursday and completed round in 4 hrs and 10 minutes. Greens in great shape as were the fairways. They had a drink cart and the young woman driving was pleasant and came by three times during our play on the course. Gateway has always been a top 5 public course in Saint Louis area and it did not disappoint.
Refresher Course
I hadn't played Gateway since the early years it was built. The course has matured beautifully. Conditions were excellent overall. Teeing grounds get a lot of use and show it. Fairways and greens were excellent and so fun to play on bentgrass! Pace of play was excellent - 3.5 hours. Played at midday on one of the hottest days of the year. Plenty of ice water on course and the beverage cart made it by 3-4 times. Staff was pretty indifferent - cart shed didn't want to come out and offload or watch bags at mandatory club drop, didn't advise what cart to use. Pro shop said they would announce when our group was up, but never heard anything so I just teed off at the appointed time. It was not crowded - I had no one ahead or behind me for 13 holes. Overall, a great round of golf!
Impressive
Even though I would put Gateway National in my top 5 St. Louis metro courses, I rarely play it on the weekend because it is too expensive. With prices reaching $98 on the weekends, you can find other quality golf courses much cheaper on the weekend (Spencer T. Olin & Annbriar). However, I played it on a Thursday morning at a price of $56. At this price, I don’t think any course can beat Gateway National. Everything I encountered was impressive.
When you pay for the round, there is a TV monitor on the wall now, telling you if you are starting on hole 1 or 10 and if it is carts on path. The starter was very friendly. We had a threesome and there was a single and he paired them up with another twosome, so there would be two threesomes – not a foursome and a twosome. The grill in the restaurant was even open at 9:30 in the morning. I saw the beverage cart on the first hole and at least 4 times before the 12th hole.
We even saw a team of college aged kids filling divots with sand – in the fairways and on the tees. Overall, the condition of the course was the best I’ve ever seen. The greens were perfect and had excellent speed. Hole number 3 green was recently aerated. However, it was done with small plugs and really did not affect the putting. All the bunkers were raked also. The only complaint I have is the weeds in front of the par 3, 4th hole, are almost too high and obstructed the view of the hole.
There is GPS in every cart and they were able to send a message to all golfers that carts were allowed to enter the fairways during our round. I also noticed 2 new porta-potties on the course now. They were also killing any weeds in the cracks of the cart paths/walkways on the back nine. This is a wonderful idea; however, they are using weed killer that leaves an aqua color on the paths. Just looks a bit strange.
You can’t go wrong with playing Gateway National during the week. Everything was top-notch.
Strong Track
While other area courses are dry as a bone, Gateway National is firm but receptive. Greens complexes actually soft and comfortably hold approach shots. Management is doing a good job keeping them watered and groomed. 4 hour 5 minute round. Sand traps need more sand, less dirt. Only knock on this excellent golf course. Can’t wait to play again.
Day at Gateway
Always a great course, can be a bit pricey but used the hot deal time and greens fees were under 40$, such a deal. Conditions were really good, but the tee boxes were beat up still from the US Open regional qualifiers. Greens and fairways are in excellent shape.
Fathers Day play
We were traveling to MN and decided to stop in St Louis and play golf. Gateway was convenient and the reviews were good. Since it Father’s Day it was slow. We had to wait on every tee box which made it feel longer than it actually was. The course could use a divot filling party. The par 3 tee boxes in particular. The greens are fast and in good shape. Fun layout and just tough enough to enjoy.
Course in Great shape
Not sure if it was the Junior PGA event being held or what but the course was in phenomenal condition.
