Beautiful approach on Par 5 Photo submitted by Pete1444216 on 11/10/2012
Great day!
It was a great experience. Beautiful course carved into the elevation above Kona. Lots of wildlife. We saw wild pigs, turkeys, and many peacocks (including white ones!). I will definitely recommend it to others, and can't wait to visit again! Oh, and the golf was challenging, but fun
AN ADVENTURE ON A CRAZY COURSE
Staff is great, course is a little crazy. Beautiful wildlife. and views.
Not a flat lie on the entire course. Fairways and bunkers are in poor condition. Bring lots of balls, very unforgiving fairways. Greens are awesome but very hard to read. No men's senior tees..its worth it just to enjoy the experience.
They say play early - lite afternoon shower
Great views. Wonderful hole designs. An overall nice round. Weekday golf as many local regulars who are used to their own pace. I am not sure if there is a local rule that I kept bumping into.
In any case, it was a good course for my 1st Hawai'i golf experience and i'll be back for sure.
Tight
Plays kinda tight, would normally love this course but don’t play much these days, bring extra balls, but overall , a fun course with a lot of elevation changes and tight!
Fun Times at Makalei
What a fun course. This is the only course on the Island that we hadn’t played until recently, and we will definitely be back.
The course lacks off course amenities, as there is only a very small pro shop in a trailer and no restaurant, but that didn’t bother us as we had read previous reviews and knew what to expect.
What we didn’t expect was how nice the greens were and how fun the course is. The fairways were pretty rough but understandable due to the amount of weather the whole area gets. It was nice and cool both days we played which is a nice difference from the courses along the coast.
There is definitely a premium to keep the ball in the short grass, but if you are able to do that, then the course is open to scoring opportunities…Find the rough off of the tee and it sure is tougher to score.
The peacocks and turkeys add to the whole experience.
Tight , normally like this kind of course, lots of elevation changes, fun, will lose a few balls if not straight
Nice course in the hills
Had a great time and the course looked great. I played with a couple very helpful and friendly locals who showed me where to hit the ball. Fun expreience.
Spectacular and Beautiful
The course is beautiful and the peacocks were mating!
The greens are in great shape.
Beautiful and fun course
Scenic course with view to the ocean. Lots of peacocks to keep you entertained while we waited between holes. Pace of play is OK, lots of single and twosome players. The course layout is fun, has some tight fairways and very hilly. Course condition is fine.
Good value.
You get what you pay for. Greens are very good and difficult to avoid three putts.
Condition of fairways are indicative of cost to play. If they were imas good a condition as the greens it would be priced much higher.
I like playing the course. Very challenging.
Everything was great, Course seems to be in a jungle, many peacocks, much elevation change, the only negative was we were told the course closes at 530 and we ushered off the course. Sunset is about 7pm, so this made no sense. In fact, I was in the fairway on 18, would have finished in 5-10 minutes. :(
Chris
We had no data and course had no yardage markers.
Lucky I had scope in bag. But excellent hole by hole booklet.
Fairways were Weedy. Trees and sand had been removed compared to book.
Be prepared for different weather compared to lower Kona.
