Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Wait wait
Maybe the future layout in 3/4 years but now is not the time to play there in beginning of development… rocks , divots , mesh , greens rough just disappointed
A good bang for the buck after work.
I’ve never played this place before the redesign, but based on past reviews, it seems like course quality is still of dire need. Staff was extremely friendly, pro shop guy gave us a great layout of the course. Overall layout is a great for the area, plenty of blind tee shots if you’ve never played before, but pretty fair. For April, hard as a rock and the fairways already look burnt out with “cart path only”? And the greens…if anything at all PLEASE ROLL THEM. It was Mt. Everest out there. I like this course for a nice after work round, got 18 holes in 2.5 hours at 5 is perfect this time of year. With some irrigation help and greens being majorly tended to, it has potential. Hopefully the added practice area will be a nice bonus for the buck.
Open, but not ready for play
Played our first round of the year on a beautiful sunny 69 degree day. The weather was perfect, but can't say the same about the course. It was cart path only as the low spots were still mush. The greens were lumpy and slow. I'm not a fan of the new layout. The old severely downhill fun to play 16th hole par 3 has been replaced by an uninteresting flat par 3. The old par 5 5th hole has been slightly shortened into an impossible par 4. You never get near the clubhouse until the 17th hole (formerly the 18th). The driving range isn''t open yet, and the new clubhouse won;t open for a couple of years . They added a nice 3 hole practice area, but they charge $7 tu use it. The one nice change is anew putting green which replaces the worst putting green in the Chicago area. The normal $45 weekday rate is highway robbery at this time, and our $34 GolfNow rate was no bargain. Hold off a couple of weeks before playing here.
Not playable
Played Saturday, April 8th. Worst conditions I have ever seen especially for a Saturday. Not ready for primetime. Not sure why it was closed for 1 1/2 years. Not as good. Who made those decisions? I submitted a complaint. I'll report back. Did I mention the greens? OMG
Disappointed
I realize the changes being made are still ongoing but charging $55 for a course that’s in terrible condition is a bit ridiculous. Also, they removed the best par 3 on the course. Not sure why, but that was disappointing!
Played April 7 2023
When i played, the course had not been Maintained in anyway since the year before. Because of attempted repairs to the Fairways they probably wont be mowing them for a couple weeks The greens were long, bumpy and very slow. the bunkers Like every other area were un maintained. Its to bad courses dont warn you in any way before saying they are open for the year and ready to play
Course Conditions
Course was in poor shape and the new greens were more sand than grass, will not play there again until 2024 at the earliest,
Great layout
This course has very make-able par 3s....but has some really long, difficult holes. If you score bogey on 10 and 11....consider it a well played hole. Greens....for the most part were in excellent condition. The fairways are going to need some TLC in the off season.
New track, same problems
The course recently underwent a "refresh" I will call it. Most of the holes stayed the same. There were a few changes, and some worked and some didn't. If you are familiar with the original layout, old #1 is now 18 so once you check in plan on a long ride back through the parking lot down a gravel (dusty) access road back to the old #2 now the new #1. They do have a small driving range along the access road (not that you would know it since no signs or mention while checking in) I should have known it was going to be a slow round when the group in front of us waited for the entire hole to be open prior to hitting 3 of 4 tee shots into the weeds. I say weeds because weeds were everywhere. Through my round I had art least 4 times my ball was in a patch of weeds while in the fairway. I broke two wooden tees trying to get them in the hard ground. All and I mean ALL of the tee boxes were more divot than grass. The greens were not aerated but aeration would have been an upgrade. I don't think I have ever repaired more ball marks on a green in my life just to have a halfway decent surface to put on. I saw only one ranger all day and I mean all day 5 1/4 hrs. That guy just drove by and waved, never checked with us about our round. The one saving grace was the beer cart came by several times.
In summary bad conditions coupled with super slow play make for a horrible golf day. This was the worst golf experience of the season...
For context I am 53 yrs old 12 index play white (mens) tee and play 3 to 4 times a week.
I use to enjoy this course but got rid of 16. The tee boxes are in bad shape, weeds in fairways and fringe. I was hoping that the renovation of the course would improve the conditions of course it got worst.
Not ready to be played
After the redesign the layout is nice and could be reall good. But the course maintenance is awful, it’s simply not ready to be played and as a result poor value compared to other courses. There are patches where fairways have been removed, best guess to repair the greens which were better than pre-renovation. There appears to be little maintenance as the rough fringe fairways and even greens are rock hard and very dried out looking…this is first week of June cannot even imagine later. There were patches of fairway that no longer had grass. I would wait another few years to see if conditions improve but seems unlikely.
Terrible shape
Course was closed all last year due to renovations- they ruined what was a fun course with horrible redesign holes- course was in horrible shape which should never be the case this early in the season- fairways were a mess- tee boxes were terrible- sadly what was a nice fun course is an absolute disappointment- most likely will not return
Nice new layout
Greens are great! Lots of elevation changes with challenging fairways. The renovation on the course is great and pace of play was amazing. Made contact with Tom prior to our round as rain was threatening, he assured that we would have a good experience and made true on his words. Definitely recommend playing at Settlers Hill! Thanks again!
