Pheasant Run Resort is one of the Chicago area's most respected resorts. It offers an 18-hole golf course that is playable for a wide range of skill levels. The course is short at just over 6,300 yards from the back tees, but it still provides a fair amount of challenges. The fairways are tight and there are water hazards that come into play on a few holes. The bunkering is minimal but strategically placed to keep you on your toes. The front of the greens are invitingly wide-open and beginners will also appreciate that they are mostly flat and easy to score on. The golf course starts out with a tricky par 5 that doglegs right past the 200-yard marker and there is a water hazard that crosses the fairway. The back nine is slightly longer and also more challenging.

Cold, Wet, and Rainy May Golf
This is the third time I've played this course in 2019, and unfortunately this visit was my least favorite one thanks to the lousy weather conditions. While the temperatures were expected to be close to 50 and there was a chance of later afternoon rain, the weather never broke 50 degrees and the rain arrived early. I made a poor decision to leave my rain gear in the car, but I pushed through the round despite the conditions. I was paired up with 3 other guys, and two of those guys decided to call it quits after about 11 holes, but I stuck it out through the rain with my cart mate to finish the round.
The course conditions were still very saturated in many areas, and numerous bunkers had standing water that hadn't been removed. Bunker conditions were poor as the sand was packed and hadn't seemingly been raked in a few days.
Overall the course has a few nice holes, but I was still surprised that they haven't put out their true back tee markers yet. Instead of having tees back at the tips, they have a blue/white tee marker on all holes. I'm not sure if this is an attempt to save the back tees for later in the season, but I would like to see the real distance for a few of the longer holes where the back tee boxes weren't being utilized.

Course was a good challenge and was in real good shape!
Returning for a Another Attempt After a Poor Performance
This review marks the 4th or 5th time that I've played this course, and I have largely enjoyed playing here during my past visits. My weekend visit had a few positives and negatives that I wanted to share.
The positives: 1) We had about 5" of rain in the past week, but the course was still open to cart paths only and most areas were tolerable with the exception of a few wet spots that were to be expected. 2) The staff was friendly in the pro shop, bag drop area, and in the halfway house. 3) I played one of my best rounds of the year thus far!
The negatives: 1) The warmer weather this weekend meant that the course was going to be busy and rounds longer than usual with many weekend golfers (especially with cart path only rules in effect), but the round took about 5 hours 15 minutes. We specifically had at least 2 groups ahead of us that were quite slow, but to my knowledge no ranger ever intervened to try and speed up play. 2) On the third hole, there is a driving range on the left side that has unsightly, ripped up nets that need to be either fixed or replaced as they are an eyesore and are there to keep people on the course safe from any stragglers using the range.
Overall, it's a decent course with some holes that can demand fairly accurate tee shots to avoid trouble.
Pheasant Run. BYOB
The course is in good condition for this time of year. For a beautiful sunny day in the mid 60’s and plenty of players, management didn’t bring in a cart person or an employee for the halfway house so bring your own drinks.
Stay away!
This course gets worse and worse every time I play it. Tee boxes are terrible, sand traps are no better, and the pace of play is by far the worst in Illinois. You have to drop off your bags and park like a block away, and their will for sure be 3- 4 some groups of old men clogging the entire course up. Couldn’t pay me to come back here. Not to mention the start off the course with a dog leg par 5 with water.
You Will Use All Your Clubs
I had been wanting to play this course for awhile and luckily picked a day that hardly anyone was out and I was able to play by myself and get some good course practice.in. Unlike some courses I used every club in my bag and was surprised when I finished that it had happened. The course is rather flat, yet open enough that you can hit not on direct line and not lose your ball. What struck me was the long par 3's that were over 200 yds. It also had a good mix of par 3's that was a short 140 over water and a nice 110 yd. hole. There were a couple par 4's that were under 300 yds which left for a nice birdie attempt. Bunkers and water were strategically place and provided an added dimension of challenge to the course. One last thing was greens took awhile to get used to and there were subtle breaks at pin placement that didn't make short putts gimmes. Looking forward to playing again.
Enjoyable Day of Golf
I took my son here for his birthday and we had a great time. Weather was great, course in good shape and this is a course that you can score well on. Overall a great day!
Solid course
Enjoyed the layout and challenging nature. Conveniently placed snack bar. Tight course. Would definitely play it again
Pheasant run review
Good time and pace of play yesterday. Very friendly staff, course in good shape!
Excellent Course
Great fun here! The greens are in AMAZING shape and roll true. This course is sneaky tough. Played on a busy Friday and the pace moved well. Cart staff very attentive, even offering a ride to/from my car. Friendly pro shop staff-got me on the course quickly. Excellent dog at the turn. Overall an excellent value!!
Not impressed
Just an okay course. Paid $55 and I don’t think it’s a $55 course. The course was pretty well maintained but the layout is pretty tight which causes a lot of playing in other fairways and hearing four yelled way too much. Overall, okay course, pretty tight, lots of trees and expect a 5 hour round if you play on the weekend.
Great pace
Everything about the course was nice except for that they didn’t have a cart girl out and the sand traps need some work....Got around in about four hours and 20 minutes
Good condition Credit Card issue
The course is in fine shape it's a typical Resort golf course. I have two complaints. One, when I made the tee time with golf now it is held with my credit card. At the other courses I've played this year the course has allowed each of us to pay seperately the credit card was just used to hold the time. Pheasant Run would not let each of the players pay they kept it on my credit card. Two, there was no where to get a hot dog or anything to eat you could get a beer but there was no food very strange I thought.
