Reviews
Poor condition
I have played this course several times in the past and was always very impressed especially for the price. This time the course was just in poor condition, the grass was high everywhere, the greens were very bumpy and many times you couldn't tell where the Fairway was because it wasn't much different than the rough. Hopefully the conditions improve over the course of the year because it is a very nice little course, one of the best values for the dollar around when it's taken care of
Staff harassed us, and did not let us finish our round.
I booked a round of 18 holes for my girlfriend and I at The Prairies of Cahokia Golf course to be played on Halloween. The course was completely empty except for the guy running the place behind the bar, and a couple greenskeepers. We had a tee time for 11:45AM, and after arriving at around 11:40 we were able to get started at around 11:50 on the first hole. We were taking our time as the place was empty, and we are just beginners. During the 8th hole at around 2PM the bartender drives up in a golf cart to tell us that we are playing too slow. This guy was treating us like we had done something wrong by taking our time. He stated that he would be locking the gate to the parking lot at 3:30PM and that we had to leave the property by then. I tried to stick up for my girlfriend and myself by asking where the early closing time was posted, and also where the rule about how quickly you needed to finish your round of 18 was posted, and he continued to avoid the questions by telling us we were too slow and that we needed to be gone by 3:30. I even asked if we could just finish the 9th hole and be given a rain check for the back 9, which of course he declined. So now we were rushing trying to play faster so we could finish. In the end we were unable to finish all 18 holes and were forced to stop short after hole 16. Needless to say we had a TERRIBLE experience at The Prairies of Cahokia Golf course, and will never be going back. If you are a beginner level golfer, or you want to bring a beginner golfing I highly recommend you avoid this course. You are expected to stay on pace to finish your round of 18 in 3 1/2 hrs. If you cannot keep that pace the staff will harass you and not let you finish your round.
Not for beginners
I went to this course with my girlfriend on Halloween. The course was empty, we were the only people golfing that day. We started at around 12 PM While in the middle of playing hole 8, around 2 PM, the bartender from the clubhouse drives up in a golf cart to tell us that we were playing too slow, and that at 3:30 PM they would be locking the gates and we had to be out by then. I asked if we could just finish the front 9 and get a rain check to come back some other time to play the back 9, and he declined the request insisting that we were playing too slow. So this place was completely empty, and my girlfriend and I, who are beginners to the game are being rushed. We were unable to finish hour round in time and had to leave before finishing the back 9. Bottom line is apparently this course is not for beginners. If your just starting out with golf, or want to bring your kids somewhere to golf, this is not the place. You have 3 1/2 hrs to finish your round of 18 holes here. If you are not good enough to accomplish that, you are not good enough to golf here.
Good course for the money.
We played it on a warn early fall day. Weather was nice, but somewhat windy. Fairways were pretty good condition. The greens had just been dressed with sand, but still played pretty true.
Course not for fall golf
Good course for value in summer but I went yesterday and greens were aerated and had a lot of sand on every green so putting was impossible. Leaves every including the greens. I wouldn’t golf here for now and wait until spring
Great Value
The course is in great condition, although the tee boxes need some attention. For the price, you can't get a better day of golf!
Paid $20 on a Saturday afternoon
You get what you pay for. Greens were pretty good, fairways not great. I played this course 25 years ago and it was much nicer. But hey, I paid $20 for 18 and a cart.
Needs more work but getting there
Staff were a highlight. Superintendent was extremely nice and trusted us to play 90deg rule despite some water on the course.
Greens were in good shape and putted true, but you need to be mindful of pitch marks in your line. Fairways were in good condition, as were the tees.
Bunkers were unplayable, not maintained, overgrown.
Layout was interesting in places, otherwise kind of boring.
Prairies review
The first 9 holes are laid out well, the last nine follow the power lines and are pretty bare and flat. The greens were in decent shape but the fairways not so much. I was surprised with how wet the course was that it wasn’t Cart path only.
They also need a course monitor as the 4some in front of us was holding up everyone. For no reason.
