Crab Orchard Golf Club
About
Crab Orchard Golf Club originally opened in 1959, but in order to keep up with modern courses, it has seen many beneficial changes over the years. Though the design of the layout has fluctuated, Crab Orchard is known among locals for consistently offering superb conditions. The scenic golf course features lush fairways winding through stands of mature oak trees. Water hazards come into play on half of the holes and the small greens have subtle breaks, which can make them difficult to read. The golf course is quite formidable from the championship tees but the forward and middle tees make it approachable for all skill levels. In addition to the course, a popular feature at Crab Orchard is the large driving range which boasts target greens and a practice bunker.

Great fall golf
Course conditions were excellent. However, the greens were just punched and there was a lot of sand so the greens were crazy slow. Unfortunately the greens were not cut in the morning we played so that added to the slow speed. Pace was great and we played in 3 hours and the price was great. Will play again !
Great Course Considering Hot Conditions
Fairways and tees were perfect. Maintenance was out in the middle of afternoon watering greens to keep them from drying out. Fun and challenging holes.
Very nice course
Great mix of short and long holes. A lot of risk/reward holes and you need to hit the fairway. Greens are in nice condition with lots of slopes to contend with. If you miss in the wrong spot, saving par will be tough.
The course was in great shape !!!
It was a very hot day we played, and the tee boxes to greens were great !! We will definitely be back, Thanks !!! Great value !!!
Great Greens
A great experence. The staff went out of there way to be friendly. the greens were remarkable and consistent. the sand in the bunkers was great (yes I was in a couple).
Fun course
Fun course. Nice people. Interesting and challenging holes.
Great Staff
The staff was incredibly accommodating. Had a great day - even with the brief rainstorm!
Crab orchard
Nice course. The only slow thing was the foursome in front of us, and no one else but us behind us. I wish they had Mountain Dew though.
Very Smooth Greens
While the course was very wet, cart path only, the greens were very smooth and rolled very well.
Crab orchard
The greens were the best part of this course. They rolled very well. The tee boxes were good, it was wet out so a lot of the boxes were off limits. Fairways were still dormant since i played in early March so they were hard to judge. The best part was the value. I played for $11 plus tax. Can't beat that. Totally worth it for that value.
Scenic views
we loved this course! The greens were challenging but fun. All levels of playing ability could play this course.
relaxed & friendly atmosphere
Check is was easy & quick! Spacing between play was perfect to where we never had to wait.
Great golf
Great round of golf and all the staff was outstanding
DISAPPOINTING
CRAB ORCHARD IS AN HISTORIC COURSE IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. FOR YEARS IT WAS THE HOME OF THE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY SALUKIS GOLF TEAM AND IS THE HOME COURSE FOR THE "SOUTHERN ILLINOIS GOLF ASSOCIATION". SO OUR GROUP WAS VERY EXCITED TO PLAY THE COURSE. BIG DISAPPOINT MENT!!! THE COURSE IS IN TERRIBLE SHAPE. 3 HOLES HAVE BEEN TUNED INTO PAR 3'S AND SEVERAL MORE SHOULD BE CLOSED. THE FAIRWAYS ARE BROWN AND HAVE BEEN TURNED OVER. I UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM WAS THE BERMUDA GRASS DIED DURING THE WINTER AND HAS NOT RECOVERED. HOWEVER.......... LET THE GOL,FERS KNOW BEFORE THEY PREPAY FOR THE ROUND!!!
collage visit
Lots of winter damage and ground under repair. Needs some work but good starter course
Under repair
Normally one of the best courses in So. Il. But due to the harsh winter several of the fairways are under repair. Greens are excellent as always . The Staff at C. O. will have this course back to where it was. Just going to take a little time, with a little help from Mother Nature .
I love the layout
This is a challenging course that's causes you to use nearly every club in your bag and use different type of shots. Course can play extremely long if you play the back tee boxes and somewhat shorter if you play the closer tee boxes.
Great Course with Friendly People
This course is fast recovering its old grandeur from this past winter's devastating cold. Here and there were only a few, small bare spots on the fairways. Overall, the course looked like a well-groomed resort park thanks to beautiful trees and ponds which are planted across the course. This is a perfect place to kill an afternoon in a relaxed, leisurely fashion.
Worth the money but not the time.
This course was not in good shape what so ever. The greens looked like fairways. Each shot is like your hitting out of dirt. They pride themselves on their course and clearly have never been to Hickory Ridge, 20 minutes away. This course is not professional by any means and probably would serve well to people not as serious about the sport.
sir, I don't know what day you played at cogc, but I can tell you the greens are walk mowed @.125, which is 125 thousandths. The course has suffered winter kill on their warm season grass in some fairways. Hickory Ridge is a good course and fortunately they saw no winter kill because they have zoysia grass, and Crab Orchard's fairways are mostly Bermuda. If you research 2014 winterkill, you will find there are a lot of courses suffering the same turf loss, from Chicago to Memphis.
Thanks for the positive comments. Just wanted to touch base about the slower greens following the aerification. That process requires quite a lot of sand. The day you played, we had a heavy dew and the sand was sticking to the bed knives/reels rendering a cut almost useless. It is one of the side effects of aerification which is necessary for good putting surfaces. Come back out sometime and try them at their normal speed.
