YIKES
Harborside used to be a great track. The cart paths hear are absolutely atrocious. Their own staff (cart girl) even mentioned how bad the paths were when we saw her on the course. The paths make Chicago potholes look good in comparison and that’s saying something.
The tee boxes are also a joke, they haven’t been cut in weeks. For a course charging $125 a round, this is unacceptable. Until the conditions on the course and cart paths improve I won’t be back.
The fairways, greens and t boxes were all in nice conditions. The course is not very forgiving, the rough could be shorter with a little more capability of finding your ball if your 2 ft off the fairway.
Disappointed in Quality
Played the Port course at Harborside yesterday. Very disappointed in the overall course quality. The rough is ridiculously long. If I hit a drive that runs slightly through the fairway into the rough, I shouldn't lose that ball because I can't find it. There is no first cut at all. Cart paths are a disaster - they're worse than Chicago roads. And the signage around the course is awful. We pulled up to a tee box to find a foursome that thought they were on the 3rd tee, but it was the 6th. We also went to the wrong tee box a couple times due to lack of signage. There are barely any rakes around the bunkers. I was in a greenside bunker with zero rakes anywhere. Not to mention the sand is pretty rough. The greens were in decent shape and fair.
Save Your Money and Go Elsewhere!
Harborside gets away with charging some of the highest rates in the area for the location. (25-40 mintues from the city, depending on traffic). Overall, the course itself is a good challenge. Have to stay in the fairway on a lot of holes, otherwise the rough is going to swallow your ball. My rating is a result of a few things NOT related to the greens or fairways itself. First, the rangers (non-existent) do a bad job enforcing pace of play. Since it is close to the city and a lot of novices play (i am one of them), people look for their ball forever and really slow down pace. When I played, i watched a two-some finish a hole while the other two players were still 150 yards out - can't happen on a busy saturday morning. Second, the goose poop on 15/16/17/18 and particularly the greens is UNACCEPTABLE. Finally, the cart paths are the worst I have ever seen on any course in my entire life. Add those things up, an $150 for 18 is insane, while you can go down the road to a few other courses and have a better experience.
Harborside
Being relatively close to the center of the city gives harborside a big advantage. Generally speaking it’s a fine course for the money depending upon what green fee you are paying. At 70ish dollars it’s a nice layout in fair condition but not up to par w many of the better maintained suburban courses. The cart paths are terrible and the greens could be a bit faster but I’m hoping that and the washed out fairway bunkers were partly due to the recent heavy rain. The course’s biggest issue seems to be the ignorant golfers who apparently can’t be bothered with raking a bunker and the great practice facility that could use a little TLC. The staff is great. Couldn’t be more pleasant and helpful.

Cool layout, esp close to city. Frindly staff and nice practice facility. Recent heavy rain forced 90 degrees on fairways (it was very wet) and greens/fairways were a little shaggy (but not course fault). Pace moved well, and saw ranger and beverage cart several times. However, cart paths are attrocious: Pot holes, uneven, disrepair all over. For $90 (twilight rate) this shouldnt be an issue. Fix them.
Fake Pricing on Golf Now
advertised as $132 for greens fee's and carts. Get to the pro shop and they charge $150. We were constantly getting notifications that cart path only had been removed and it was now 90 degree's from path. Every time we tried to follow the 90 degree from cart path instruction, the cart would shut down.
Very nice!
My only problem was the rough off the fairways and greens, I get it’s supposed to be unforgiving but man I lost about 10 balls just off the fairway. Really had to comb through thoroughly. The sand was concrete but that could be because it rained a few days in a row before I went. Overall had a very fun time! Amazing hotdogs btw best ever at a course.
Not a fan of this course anymore, starting to show age, cart paths you take your life into own hands, greens where no one fixes hallmarks, pot holes in cart paths,no sand in bunkers, worse was playing through multiple foursomes as a single where was forced to wait while golfers in front were giving lessons to players, won’t be back
I originally booked a deal time for the Starboard course. Upon arrival I was told that there was an outing on the Starboard course and the website shouldn’t have made that time available. The Harborside staff did a great job problem solving a situation they didn’t create (at least I don’t think they did) and got me out on the Port course.
PACE: Given the circumstances, I was dropped in as a single amongst 4somes, which is fine. I finished in just over 4 hours. However, 2 groups ahead of me was a 5some. They moved well, but I was surprised to see that at Harborside.
CONDITIONS: As with all courses, Harborside is in need of some rain. There were some bare/burnt spots, but most were in areas you shouldn’t be playing from anyway. The tees were beat up with divots. The fairways and rough were in good condition, and the bunkers splashed great. The greens have a bunch of potholes (repair your ball marks!) and ran at a fair speed.
STAFF: Excellent! The starter let me know about Starboard having an outing and offered a solution. The women in the Pro Shop were understanding and helped rely that message to the manager who worked to resolve the issue. I hope Harborside can work with that tee time booking company to prevent issues like this from happening again, but on this day they did a great job of troubleshooting and ensuring customer satisfaction. Thank you!
VALUE: As I said, I got a deal time online. Harborside is an enjoyable place to play but its regularly priced greens fees are outside my golf budget. Play it if you got it.
LAYOUT: I booked Starboard, and I do prefer Starboard’s layout to Port. Port does have a good collection of par 3s, and the closing 3 holes are fun and challenging. It would be nice to see some better yardage markers on sprinkler heads and maybe a 150 pole (the equipment is already installed in the fairway). Your greens fee will include a cart, but Harborside will let you walk if you want and both courses are walkable.
Birthday Round
Was celebrating my son's 30th birthday so we choose this course. A bit pricey compared to what I'm used to. Beautiful course and design. Lots of sand and I felt like I was in every trap. Had a great time and maybe the next time we'll play the starboard course.
Brutal
The courses are normally well kept, but it was in horrible condition. From the traps ( no sand, no consistency), tee boxes were hairy with no grooming, the fairways were horrendous with rough in the middle of the fairway ( the mowers missed huge swaths of grass, the greens were beat up and hairy. Not one aspect of the course was in good condition. For a course that charges the top fees around, this was absolutely unacceptable. I will not be returning till course conditions improve, I wouldn’t recommend it.
Not a fun day
The wind and the rough make this a really tough course. The pace of play and the entitled attitude of the people at the course that day ruined it for me. If it’s busy it’ll take atleast an hour to get through the final 3 holes on the port course. Cool holes but it’s a log jam.
