Overall Nice
Overall, the course and play was good. The staf was friendly (at the desk) however one of the grounds keeper mowed two of our balls ON THE VERY HOLE we were playing. That alone makes me feel like they aren’t very high quality on EXPERIENCE. I won’t go back because of the distance but also because I don’t like losing $6 balls to a mower.
Great Service/Slow Play/Average Course
From start to finish all the employees here were just fantastic and desired that you to have the best experience possible. The course is a fairly mundane parkland course suffering from a number design and routing errors. The tee shots on 2, 4 and 5 are ridiculously tight and overly treed up so your weekend warriors quickly put up some very high numbers that slow play considerably. Plus if you've never played the 4th and 5th good luck. Inexplicably to reach both front nine par 3 tees you drive back into play requiring a sharp eye/hardhat. If you get through 5 you'll have some scoring chances. Same with the back nine with 11th a long par 3 and then you have back to back well over 400 yard uphill par 4's. Both nines finish with picturesque uphill par 4's to plateau greens. Greens were rolling decently except pretty ripped up from golfers not being careful walking on them. Fairways rough and traps all in decent shape too. The starter/ranger attempted to get play moving but was unsuccessful...wasn't his fault. Our back nine slowed to crawl despite when making turn where it was clear that the 14th and 15th hole (and likely more) were completely devoid of golfers. First year as part of our Golfvisions players pass book since Settler's Hill is closed for renovations and that's why we played it. I tend to not have Hughes Creek on my must play every season list but will recommend it for play once a year due to the outstanding employee service we experienced. Hughes Creek just doesn't contain any holes that I have to play again and again. Decent place but a $30-$35 value.
Worth a visit
Nice course. Several interesting holes. Be careful on #5. One of my favorites in the Chicago area. No range though.
its in better shape than it has been in the past
pace of play has also improved
Hughes Creek
Facility under new ownership/management this year, and definitely not up to par! Drinks greatly increased and overpriced, clubhouse dirty, and bathrooms unkept and dirty, golf carts not clean, course littered with debris and in need of care. This was a beautiful course and facility that has now gone into a downward spiral with the new management. It is being managed poorly.
Sporty and Scenic course
Played on a beautiful fall day which happened to be June 22nd. Low 70's, windy and clear. Finished in less than 4 hours and thoroughly enjoyed the round. The layout is interesting with a few brute par 4's and some easy ones. Fairways were in pretty good condition considering the lack of rain the past 2 months, and the green were fast. Only drawbacks are the lack of a driving range and the kitchen is closed for the year. The cart girl, Anne, was very friendly and attractive. Out in the country and very scenic. It has houses bordering some holes, but they are way back and no danger of hitting one.
VERY FAIR PRICE
good layout other than the 4th hole which is the worst in Chicago. Turn into a par 3 and move on.
No singles allowed
I have played this course at least 30 times the last two years but new management no longer wants singles. They have openings but won’t let you meet up with an existing group. Same thing at Tanna farms which I played 20 times last year. Tanna has all kinds of openings but won’t let me play. There are plenty of courses that will take my money for the 50 rounds I play each year.
Fun Track
I just love this little gem out in Elburn. Course really fits my eye. I feel it’s a very forgiving course yet challenging. You don’t get punished too bad for miss hits and the greens were in great shape; rolling very true.
I’d return!
First time playing Hughes Creek. Enjoyed the course layout and setting. Course conditions were good, though the sand traps could use some attention. Overall, it was a good golf experience. I’d return (though it’s a long drive for me to get there from the NW burbs)
