Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Awful service
Clubhouse attendant was on phone with friends each time I went in there. She told me any cart was fine but then did not give me a key so I had to go back in. She said range was closed as they were saving balls for he next day. When I made the turn and ended my round there were multiple people on the range hitting balls. I will go to Far Oaks every time now over there.
Nicklaus does not disappoint.
Great course even better staff. The further back you play. The skinnier the fairway. They just aerated today and the grass are still brown.
Very nice course and excellent staff
It was a cold day but the course is in great condition. The staff is very courteous. This is one of the best public courses in the area. I would love to come back more. Great venue
Challenging course
Great shape. Beautiful layout. It definitely tests your golf skill!
Stonewolf
Greens were aerated and sanded which made putting tough all day. Fairways cut very thin and the bunkers were wet due to rain. Draft beers were not available, kit good since they have a bar, someone didn’t do their job!
Too Expensive For The Condition Of The Course
Stonewolf is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design. He gives you ample space to drive your golf ball. It is a 2nd shot golf course. The angles of the greens and the placement of the greenside bunkers, makes this a difficult golf course.
I last played Stonewolf back in April and the course has improved some but has got worse in other areas.
The improvements are the fairway on hole 10. In April, it was a disaster and now it is so much better. They placed new sod on the right side of the fairway, on the 2nd shot on the par 5, 14th hole. I thought the greens putted fairly well with some speed. However, some of the greens were still not in the best shape. The greens were soft, leaving many large ball marks. The greens that were the worse were holes 2, 5, 7 & 8.
The most disappointing aspect of Stonewolf were their bunkers. Most of them filled with water. I know we had a good rain on Tuesday night but for them to be still filled with water 4 days later was not expected.
The course has many “ground under repair” areas, marked by white paint. These would be holes 1, 12 & 17. The left side of the fairway, near the large fairway bunker on hole 14, is bare with no grass. Hole 6, has some significant erosion near the cart path by the green.
I thought the tees were in good shape except for hole 12. The tee shot on hole 9 was really narrowed, with the tree growth on both sides. Some trimming may be needed on the right side.
With greens fees of $90 for an early weekend round, this course is not worth playing. You can play better golf courses at a much cheaper rate at Spencer. T. Olin, Far Oaks & Annbriar in Illinois. Gateway National may have a similar green fee rate but is the best conditioned golf course in the area.
Fun round
Very enjoyable round, course was in good shape, had a fun day
Good course. Slow play!
I would recommend this course but they overbook and pace of play is slow. Three groups on tee at times. Plan to spend a day!
Fun, burnt, over-valued
Fun, pretty layout, but helps to have played it before. Several target holes off the tee. Hilly parts on the course, and the carts struggled to get up some. Half the greens were fairly bald and burnt. Fixing ball marks on the greens must be optional🤬. Paid $70/pp via GolfNow on Labor Day…it’s prolly closer to $50/pp value. I would compare this course to Spencer T, and it should be priced accordingly.
