About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2022.
Gleneagles County Club is home to two 18-hole golf courses, the Red and White. Opened in 1924, both courses have traditional layouts that have withstood the test of time. The Red Course, also known as the Lakes, is the longer of the two. Water hazards come into play on several holes, including what is considered the club's best par 3. The Red's 16th is a 170-yard hole that plays directly into the wind to an elevated green that is protected in front by a pond. It's a tough green to hit but a relatively easy one to putt. Both Gleneagles golf courses appeal to a wide range of skill levels, which is one reason why the club is known as the "Home of the Shotgun Start," serving as host to hundreds of golf outings every year.

End of Season Round
Played here with the excellent weather we had. Course was in really good shape given it’s November. Bunkers were mostly flooded and unplayable. Greens and fairways were in good shape. 4.5 hours to get through 18 as there was a group in front of us backing things up.

Good times
Greens on red course were great (i.e. fast) sand traps need work.

Great Course
This is a GREAT old course. Big oak trees, very tricky greens. But as the year goes on, it is so over used. It gets really beat up . To the point I don’t want to play it.
Worst course in Chicago
Arrived early to try to get out early. Told was slammed then watched no one tee off for 45 mins all while still told to wait. Very unfriendly. Round took 7 hours!!! Worst condition excuse of a golf course. Every one should be fired and jailed.

Plush fairways and great greens!
This is a very well maintained course. The fairways are like playing off of plush blankets. The greens were in great shape and very fast, even earlier in the day, when there was still some dew on them. For how busy this place seems to get, their grounds crew must be very busy. There were hardly any bare patches on the fairways or greens. The holes are interesting enough, and present a decent challenge. Nice halfway house with someone actually working in it.
My only con would be that if you are playing as a single (as I was), the pace can be a little slow. I was there between 8:45-1:00 on a Wednesday, and both of the entire courses were PACKED. Luckily, there was no mass, muli-group back ups on each hole, as there was a ranger patrolling. If you are in a group of 3-4 , pace shouldn't be an issue. They can also use a little better signage directing to certain, hard to find holes, for us newcomers.
Definitely worth checking out!
AGolfGuy, thank you for your kind words! We hope to see you again at the course very soon for another 5-star experience. Thanks for choosing Red at Gleneagles Country Club.
Not worth the money!
Bunkers were basically dirt, greens and tee boxes were filled with weeds. Dead trees everywhere.

Awful Sand
This course isn't bad but the sand is so horrible. It's like hard dirt every time I play and it makes it very hard to play your sand shots like the should be played. Really should invest is proper sand.

Nice course overall
Played 18 holes shortly after days of rain. Considering how much we had dumped on us in a short time, course was in pretty good shape. Extremely well-maintained links-style course with small greens. Putting wasn't too bad, but I would have to imagine the very wet conditions played into that. Narrow fairways all around, but very playable from the rough. Overall, I would gladly play here again and would be interested to see what the course has to offer in dry conditions.
