Greens are getting better
Greens were rough with new plugs growing in. Fairways are in good condition. Staff are excellent. They offered to regrip my clubs and bring them to me on the course.
Bad greens
This is my local course and is usually in good shape. It is in terrible shape right now. The greens are awful. Some are slow and some are fast as it appears they are trying to recover from some earlier issues this summer when they had an irrigation issue. However, some of the fairways are also in bad shape and it appears they are too dry. I am not planning to play this course again this year, even though we can get a good rate through GolfNow.
I enjoyed the course. It is an older public course. The tees, fairway and rough were in good shape. A few of the green on the front side had dead spot through out the greens and even within 10 to 15 feet of the cup. Some of the sand traps were full of sand and some had barely any sand in them. I liked the layout of the course.
My home course
I don’t belong to a club because this is just such a good value. Nice people, good condition overall (had a problem with some vandalism that they are working to overcome), and I LOVE the layout. Greens are in good shape. The best part of the course is that it’s part of the forest preserve and there is wildlife everywhere. LOTS of trees so keep it straight or bring lots of balls.
Course condition bad
Fairway was uncut, uneven and untalented care. Balls got easily hidden under the tall grass on the fairway. Green was uncut and so slow. Difficult to judge the ball speed.
Good value at a dollar a hole.
The winter months and a dry spring made the course a little rough around the edges.
Nice course in the country !
The course wasn't in the best of shape due to it being late in the year. The greens hadn't been cut in a while & there were a lot of leaves but the crew were blowing & mowing them off as the day went on.All in all it is a nice course with a good layout !
A classic design that's both beautiful and challenging
I grew up playing this course, so I understand that I have a bit of bias right off the bat! In central Illinois, there are few public golf courses that have the beauty and course conditions that Lake of the Woods brings year-in-year-out. There are trees everywhere, but you have to miss quite badly to bring them in to play on most holes. There are bunkers and water on a number of holes, but the greens are large with lots of landing areas. It's truly a course that I, as a 7 handicapper, can shoot in the mid-seventies on, and turn around and be 10 strokes higher the next time out. It's a real joy to walk, though it is incredibly hilly for our area, so a cart is a real treat if you can get one. The putting green is large, and though it's rather flat, there's also a chipping green behind the clubhouse that gives you plenty of slope if you want it! This is a course I hope to play my entire life, as it's level of challenging playability and beauty are hard to match.
Great course overall
Tees, greens and fairways were all in great shape, the whole course was lush and green and well manicured. The only bad area was sand bunkers on front 9, lack of sand ! But back 9 were in good shape.
Course in good shape
Despite the rough and bunkers being hard hit by recent heavy rains, the course is in good shape. Tees and greens were well kept. Greens were a touch slow but very good roll. I hadn't been to Lake in a couple seasons. Staff was much friendlier than in past years. I would go back.
Worst conditioned course around!
This is absolutely the worst maintained course you can play. Dirt instead of grass for fairways, greens that never roll true and that are missing patches on almost every one, and bunkers as hard as concrete. If it was ever maintained, it has the potential to be a fun track. Unfortunately, I've played it a couple times a year for the last 8 years or so and every time I do, I wish I had never come.
