Nettle Creek
About
Nettle Creek Golf Course in Morris, Ill. offers one of the most unique golfing experiences in southwest Chicagoland. The course has a links-style layout set in a beautiful prairie environment abundant with wildlife, a non-traditional setting for links golf. The championship layout features generous fairways and large, undulating greens flanked with cavernous, free-slowing sand traps. You won't find many trees on Nettle Creek's rolling terrain but colorful wildflowers and native grasses frame all of the holes. In addition to several strategically placed bunkers, water comes into play frequently in the form of ponds and wetlands. There are ample risk-reward opportunities that will test your shot-making skills. You may find that you have to use every club in your bag. The golf course has some challenging holes but it's still forgiving enough for players of any skill level to enjoy.

Hard as a rock and dry as a bone
Always have enjoyed playing Nettle (see previous review) but even this early in the season I can't recommend playing this track for a least another month (or two). It appears the grounds keeping crew cut the course too short prior to closing last winter and here's hoping the grasses will come back. Nettle has an interesting layout with a good mix of short and long par 4's....problem is that conditions are rock hard (even in the rough) and the ball just bounds and bounds with lots of roll out. This early in the season with the more than average rains? The course has several maintenance issues - all par 3 boxes and many others are just minefields with no way to get a level stance when teeing off from old divots. The tee boxes obviously haven't been maintained.....way to many old tees everywhere and lazy golfers have just pounded their tee completely into the ground and leave it there. Sand traps are marginally to not maintained at all. Dirt mainly and some with no sand in them at all. A lot of the rough just off the fairways is sketchy at best....with lots of bare area so your ball just sits down on hard pan with grass completely around it. Fairways are in fairly decent shape but at this point cut too short. The green sites are all sketchy at best. Pretty bumpy, inconsistent and is certainly not what I've experienced in the past at this facility. Appears the front nine greens and practice green were aerated late season (still have some aeration holes) while the back nine greens did not appear aerated at all. Several of the holes looked "aged" where they either cut them bad or have left them there for too long. Overall Nettle is "maintained" but again not what I've experienced in past seasons. Here's hoping that the course grows out and gets a lot of rain or watering because it needs it. Re-sod or recondition the tee boxes and the greens/holes in proper order ....heck even consider aerating the fairways and roughs and sand them....it's that rock hard. Wish I could recommend at this time but there are many other area courses in so much better shape this early in the season. Folks in the clubhouse are very nice and they had a $2 special on Mich Lite and Busch Lite. Will try to return Aug/Sept to see if conditions have improved. 2.5 stars....normally at least a 3 to 3.5 and was a 4 a few seasons ago. $30 value or less.
Hot Deal Great Deal
Nettle Creek is a typical prairie style course so mostly wide open. The greens are average speed and they are nice size with plenty of undulation. In my opinion, hole #2 is the hardest hole on the course. It's a par 4 and the second shot is a forced carry over water to a green that slopes in every direction except to any of the pin placements. The pars 3s are all nice and my favorite is #15. Nettle Creek is always in good condition. I did notice they are working on the traps which have been in need of a little love for sometime. Other than that, nothing negative to say. Oh, the restaurant is closed only because it's late season. I have eaten there and the food Is always very good.
This course was in great shape

Great Course
Nettle Creek is a fun and very challenging course. It will make you work every aspect of your game. Greens are extremely quick. The downside was many of the bunkers had dirt rather than sand and the course lacked any water jugs out on the course. It was a 90 degree day and the refreshment cart was nowhere to be found. Will definitely play again.
Thank you for the 4 Stars and for taking the time to leave a review. We appreciate the feedback and are always looking for ways to improve. We look forward to having you back out on the course!
Horrible bunkers-concrete
Overall pretty good- but they have the worst bunkers of any course I have ever played. They have not seen fresh sand or a rake in months maybe years.
Thank you for your feedback on the bunkers!
All around good course
Well taken care of,would recommend.
Thank you for the 5 Stars! We are always working hard to keep the course in the best shape. Hope to have you back soon!
Cut the grass !!!!!
I hate the new trend in golf courses that let certain areas of the rough grow out not mowing it all year.
They are breading grounds for bugs and they look terrible. Unfortunately Nettle Creek has joined the lets maintane cheap club. I have played the course several times and like the course, just not as much as I used to.
Thank you for your feedback. We always like to hear what our golfers think of our golfer and are always more than willing to take suggestions into consideration.
Tee boxes
At times the white tee markes were by the blues and sometimes ahead of the Reds . Goofy!!!!
We apologize for the mix up, but we do hope you enjoyed your round with us!

Nettle was in decent shape
A fun early season play and well maintained. Greens need to grow out a tad.....good/decent shape and other than that the folks were nice, the traps were raked and enjoyed a nice under 4 hour round on a weekend. Nice routing.......and has several holes that are challenging......but the 9th and 18th are two of the easier finishers to nines that you'll find.....which puts you in a good mood when visiting the clubhouse.
Thank you for the 4 stars and all the wonderful feedback regarding our course! We hope you will be back soon to see us again!
Solid Value for a Nice Course
Always enjoy the trip to Morris for this Course. It is in need of some rain, but nothing other than some help with the tees and some dry areas. The Greens and Fairways were in Terrific condition. We drive about 70 miles each way to avoid the weather and get some cheap gas to warrant it. And after a nice round on a fun, challenging course, hit the Morris Diner on 47 for a hearty meal.
Decent Shape
Mid 90's temps resulted in an almost empty course. Nettle in nice shape and generally maintained with some okay design features but does have some really short Par 4's.....two in a row on the back nine. A few greens had some ball mark issues, golfers not walking correctly on the greens...sand traps were sketchy at best....our once (or twice at most) a year journey to Morris was enjoyable. Some areas playing hard/fast...other areas you got no roll.....it had rained heavily the previous day. The 2nd hole is a little over the top and comes too early in the round. Giving it 4 stars but it's really around 3.5 however grading up as overall it was in better shape than it was last year and we got around in well under 4 hours on a Sunday.
Enjoyable experience.
The course is in great shape. The staff is always pleasant.

Great course
Great course rates were reasonable and had an awesome time. 2 is real tough but there were a lot of deceptively challenging spots on the course. Creeks that cause you to lay up or take a big chance greens with a lot of ungulations allowing for tough pin placements, small greeeens with large bunkers up front. Quite a bit of water but a lot of it is parallel to the fairway. If you have a bad hook it is in play. It is quiet and we rarely have anyone directly behind us the whole round. Even on a nice weekend. This is surprising because it's nicer than a lot of courses in the area and it's the same price. There were houses but also lots of wildlife making the course real nice. A lot of cranes, rabbits squirrels and I even saw an eagle. This is now my favorite course in the area and I will be here regularly.
Thank you so much for all of the positive feedback! We truly appreciate the 5 Stars and hope to have you back out at Nettle Creek in the future!
