Majestic, monumental martinsville
Great historical course! Fun and easy to walk. Greens were in fantastic shape. Staff was very courteous and professional. Course is short and tight in spots. Must pick the right club and right line off the tee. Keep it in play and you’ll have the chance to make birdies.
Terrible, terrible people
I am disgusted with the people who run this “establishment”. While my brother was playing today for his bachelor party, the owner of this course made an extremely hateful comment to him. Him and his friends were being quiet, respectful, and playing in a timely manner when the most unhappy man alive (who must have the worst marriage) comes up to him, rudely interrupts their game they paid for, and makes a hateful comment to my brother regarding his engagement. When calling to ask why this comment was made, his daughter (also someone who must be very unhappy with her own life) yelled at me for telling her father to do better, which he should do, and should also be apologizing. I am disgusted by these people, no one should ever have to deal with such hate on a weekend where they are peacefully celebrating an engagement and I will be recommending this wannabe country club to no one. Bad people do not deserve your money, take it elsewhere.
Nice course.....lots of inconsiderate golfers.
This is a nice course with many interesting holes and in fairly nice condition. The greens always seem to be cut long and are very slow, but in nice shape. The major problem with this course seems to be the types of players. More often than not you find very slow players that refuse to allow faster players through even if there are several holes open in front of them. The last time we played there was a foursome that was extremely slow and hitting the ball all over the course, there were 2 holes open ahead of them but they never offered to let us through even though we were waiting 10-15 minutes for them on every hole. And normally there is no ranger on the course. For that reason I we rarely play here.
Old school gem
When think of golf, this is it. Beautiful course with parkland settings. Great greens and friendly staff. Sam, the owner and PGA pro is also a great teacher. A place you'll tell your friends about with glowing praises!
Maintainence needed! Greens way too slow
This is a great little course but it needs some attention. Seems like owners mught be losing interest. Lots of bare areas on fairways and greens. Greens are left too long and are very slow, not fun to have to pound putts to get them to hole. Some bunkers are horrible/unplayable, others would be ok if they were maintained. Would like to see some people working on the course besides just cutting grass.
Has Potential
Martinsville is an interesting course with a lot of contours/elevation changes and several tight holes. However, it's clearly taken a beating from the weather this year, and had a lot of water damage, in fairways and the greens showed a day's worth of footprints when I played, making putts almost impossible to keep on line. Some holes you do need to peek ahead to make sure you're hitting the correct line if you've never played it before. And like I said the layout will keep you thinking, and if you spray you might be chipping out. I'd give it a while to heal though before going, but it's worth a trip or a stop if traveling down 37.
Best kept secret
This golf course is isouth of Indianapolis Martinsville Indiana about 25 minutes from Greenwood Indiana fabulous golf course no houses friendly staff family owned since the6 60’s. Sam Carmichael is the pro there he was a touring pro back in the 60s .. In my opinion it’s the best public golf course in our area. The value is unbelievable $28 for seniors to play Monday through Friday $36 is the regular rate we can rates $42 before one and $36 after one fabulous
Great course
This is a very fun course. Offers a fairly diverse layout throughout its 18 holes. The final hole can be intimidating, I would recommend not hitting a driver if you are long off the tee unless you can curve the ball around the bend. Greens and fairways are always nice.
A little slice of heaven in the Hoosier state
Played here as part of a buddies weekend that included golf and a trip to the Indy 500.
I was pleasantly surprised by how fun this place was to play. I had heard plenty about it (former IU legend Sam Carmichael runs the place and is there daily) and was eager to get out for some fun. It's not often I'm able to play in this part of the country so I was ready for the treat.
It exceeded my expectations. The back nine is the original nine holes and the front nine was added about 40-plus years ago to make this an 18-hole facility. There is little difference between the two sides although the back does seem a little more open.
Still the treelined layout is great it's a good place to play if you're looking for low-stress golf. It was in terrific shape, the greens rolled perfectly and a great time was had by all. It's likely we will continue to keep this place in our annual rotation for this weekend.
Great course
Out of towner. Played 36 two years in a row and loved every moment. The elevation change is definitely challenging, but makes it very fun. Greens are beautiful, and hold very well. If you hit into the trees, you might as well not look for your ball.
One of my favorites
Lots of trees and elevation changes make this a great course to play. Greens were in great shape (speedy! ). Fairways and tee boxes were great; the rough was spotty and dry, so errant shots kinda took off, but hey, don't aim there. Bunkers were a little neglected. Pace was just ok; somehow 2 people held up the whole front 9. I play here every year at least once, and it's always a good round; I'll put the back nine versus just about any other course. Especially pretty scenery in the fall.
Nice old course
The course was beautiful, but I don't recommend it on a weekend. Pace of play is to slow. My foursome walked and still waited on almost every shot. The bathroom facilities are out dated, only a porta potty out on the course that was in need of cleaning. The food was either a hotdog or cold pre-made sandwiches which was fine...but I wanted a burger. The old pro shop was unique and charming. Over all, not a good value on the weekend, but I will play it again during the week
