Excellent course if at a discounted price
I have played this course 2-3 times a year for the past 5 years. My biggest compliant about this course is that it is normally over watered, which has lead to plugged balls in the fairway and almost no run out on approach shots no matter the distance. As long as you know this about the course, you can adjust for it and it is not a major concern. The staff has been friendlier over the past couple years and pace of play is always good. Course is always in great condition but I don't view this course as a good value unless you can save 40-60% from their normal green fees.
Slow play made for a long afternoon!
Great course and facilities. Saw the ranger 2 or 3 times on the front BUT not once on the back nine. I played in a 3-some with a 2-some in front and a 4-some of terrible golfers in front of the 2-some. The 4-some didn't let the 2-some go through until the 17th hole. I had driven 90+ miles to play a great course and the back nine waiting on every shot made for a very irritating 9 holes of golf. The course was in great shape and quite challenging with almost every hole having an elevation change.
Top 3 course in C.R./IA City
Great staff and set up. Challenging, scenic and very fun course to play. Always plays soft. Always. Water stations proportionally though out. Would recommend not even thinking about walking this course. Top 3 in Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area that the public can play.
Oh man Amana!
This scenic course is for the serious golfer who enjoys accuracy and precision in his shot selection. The fairways are narrow but the greens are long and wide. The course's natural beauty can also be enjoyed by the novice player who brings an extra box (not sleeve) of balls!
Amana Colonies Golf Course . Well worth the drive
Four of us went to Amana Colonies for golf. Two of the foursome had played the Amana years ago and two had never been there. I is a beautiful course. Greens were in perfect condition. Fairways were wide. Rough was thick. A lot of lost balls trees and rough can be tough on your ball supply. Overall excellent and beautiful course. We will definitely return. We are from Des Moines. Well worth the drive for a day of challenging golf and comraderie.
Great Course
Challenging. Narrow Fairways and blind shots to the greens. Hilly
Hills with views
We played mid week and literally had the course to ourselves. This is a well maintained course that's very hilly. Good test of golf. Better have your uphill and downhill shots. Property has over 600 acres, so you don't see other holes when playing. Enjoyable round!
Wonderful golf course!
A must play! Great layout, excellent condition, and staff is friendly and accommodating! Great value! Amazing views and plenty of wildlife in the area! I will certainly play again!
Hot day on the links
Was about 80-90 degrees and the bugs were everywhere. Asked at the proshop for bugspray and was referred to four different people. Still no bug spray. Otherwise they course was great although the greens had been aerated and where not rolling true.
beautiful course
If there is an overall better course in Iowa, I haven't played it yet. You have every hole to yourself essentially with very few houses on the course. Tree lined fairways(oak forests on either side) make hitting fairways a must. There are few level lies and some blind shots. Not what you think of when you think of Iowa golf! Overall course is in good condition considering the long Iowa winter. I have played almost all of the Top 10 ranked Iowa courses, and Amana Colonies is still my favorite
Challenging
Overall, the course was in pretty good shape. We went out earlier in the morning, so there was plenty of dew which made the rough extra tough. Unfortunately, they had just mowed the fairways and it left plenty of small clumps of grass throughout the fairway. You could move the clumps out of the way, but it wasn't visually appealing. The greens were in pretty good shape, but did not have much speed to them. The greens are heavily contoured though, so expect a couple of three putts. Expect to lose some balls in the trees on errant shots, but I found a ball for everyone I lost, so I broke even. Many shots will require a carry to the green, fairway, or over a hazard. Be prepared to hit from contoured fairways and uneven lies most of the day. The bunkers were exceptionally wet and packed considering they had drains. This is a tougher golf course that will not treat beginners kindly. The views and privacy are great, but extra golf balls are a must.
Tough, but fair. Narrow fairways, lots of trees
If you're a novice or intermediate, take a lot of balls. Trees line both sides of fairly narrow fairways. Beautiful layout with abundant deer, geese and turkeys. Need a cart as many holes are distant apart. Quite hilly so don't venture into steep side hills,
specially when wet, as it can be dangerous.
Beautiful venue but no marshal to keep players moving.
A great course that is well maintained. Can get great value with the special rates that are quite often available. Biggest problem was the lack of a marshal to get players to keep up the pace or to make them let faster groups play through (normal golf etiquette). There should not be a reason to have a pace of play great than 4.5 hours.
Beautiful and challenging
Wonderful surrounding great course. Range ball in included. Keep it in the fairway or it will cost ya.
This course is awesome, each hole is a new challenge
This is the nicest course I've played this year. Also the most difficult. Didn't score well, but it didn't matter, it was absolutely gorgeous. If there is a nicer layout than this,I want to see it!
Beautiful spot, nice golf course, good condition.
Course in nice shape, perhaps slightly over-watered. Play moved along well, fun course to play.
ok
This course is awesome. I've been golfing for over 20 yrs. I have a 5 handicap and this course puts me too the challenge every time. You want a challenge? Play Amana colonie golf club, seriously........
Gorgeous challenge in the heart of Iowa
I really like playing this course. It is visually stunning and tough. The fairways are lined on most holes with large, old oak trees making driving accuracy and conservative play a must. It really is worth the trip, you'll have a great experience.
Beautiful and very tough
I was visiting Iowa, and expected flat terrain and probably a boring layout. Not here. This course is very hilly and it's built in the woods. Houses are only seen briefly on the left side of 3 holes. Bring a lot of balls. If you stray from the fairway even a little, there is a good chance your ball will be gone. The course plays much tougher than it's course rating, and you probably need to play it a couple times to shoot a decent score.
