Course Strategy Makes It Fun
Portland Country Club is a public golf course that is open to all golfers of every skill level. The 18 hole layout plays to a par 70 and combines the older tree lined nine holes with the newer back nine holes. The course is not overly challenging but has several holes in which you will need to employ some strategy to avoid big numbers depending on you skill level. With the little Salamonie River and a feeder creek running through the course along with the ponds on the back nine you will need to decide to either layup or try and carry the hazards. There are several holes in which OB can come into play if you are not careful, including hole #12 which run along highway 27. This hole can be played several different ways as long as you have the nerves not to worry about hitting your ball OB onto the highway or dunking it into the River. The Greens vary quite a bit from very small and flat to medium size with a lot of undulation and character, the speed is usually moderately fast and are well maintained. The Fairways and Tees are a combination of grasses, clover, and a few other weeds, the rough is the same but just deeper. There are a few Sand Traps and these could really use some work, form hard pan to nice sand the bunker are not well maintained.
All in all, I find the course enjoyable and somewhat challenging to play with a few risk reward holes to keep it interesting. The green fees are very fair and I would recommend playing if you are in the area.
