Does the job

Not a world-class course by any means but for the location and the price I have no complaints. Would absolutely play again.

Langford design

Nice course designed by William Langford. Good layout. Nice green complexes with undulations. The course was in decent shape, and had a good amount of traffic on a sunny 90 degree day but pace of play was reasonable. It’s a solid course, pretty fun... but it didn’t blow us away. It has a very pleasant little restaurant/bar with a nice balcony overlooking the 18 green. Very friendly staff. Good food.

Understated Langford design brilliance

With a course name that's a triple positive (think about it) my round at Maxwelton was just that. 4.5 stars honoring with a 5 star because all disciples of the L&M design team should absolutely make the trek to Syracuse to experience it.

Langford did this track himself. Keep in mind his running buddy Moreau (who pretty much ran and supervised the construction crew at their courses) didn't participate. You don't get deep built up fairway bunkers or many larger scale audacious features of other L&M's like Lawsonia or the never sanded courses Spring Valley/Kankakee Elks.

On fairly gently rolling land Langford made use of several ridges to challenge, impede or lengthen your tee shots heightening the mystery and pleasure when your ball disappears over them. A very pretty parkland experience with enough teeth for today's equipment.

Front nine is routed on the inside of the playing grounds allowing the golfer to observe pin positions/strategize later round challenges. Back to back very different reverse direction par 5's on the front. The back nine starts out with it's only par 5 (with a hidden pond over the ridge on your tee shot) and features only one par 3 (the lovely 13th) true Langford form...the land/terrain spoke to him - nil care for scorecard standardization. Maxwelton finishes with 5 par 4's. Excellent variety of push up green sites and slopes keep you on your toes as well.

The finishing hole is an absolute hoot. Extreme land forms on the left and right are pure Langford (channeling an absent Moreau) and you see virtually no fairway to play to. Your tee shot also has to fend off a tree in the middle at the start of the fairway. The final green is almost flat as a pancake completely different from any other Langford green site I've ever observed. It's there for a reason - Bill figured everyone had enough of a challenge at that point.

Everyone at Maxwelton is incredibly welcoming to a first timer - from owner to grounds crew. Their regulars as well....really really pleasant. The Maxwelton crew take great pride in their course and it shows. Greens were rolling nicely at stimp extremely fair for the old school slopes and nuances. Sand traps well maintained. The fairways did suffer a bit this season due to heavy rains but they are addressing that. Water jugs on course and a nice well used "country" clubhouse with outdoor deck next to the 18th. A highlight of my 2018 golfing season. Already want to return and will next season.

A Langford Hidden Gem

Maxwelton has friendly staff, is kept in great shape, and is always an enjoyable experience. I cannot overstate how much fun it is to play at this course. When it comes to value, I cannot think of another course that gives you more bang for your buck.

Great Course, Better Owners

My fiancé and I were in town to visit some family, and snuck in a round of golf with my aunt, uncle, and cousin before heading back home. The weather was perfect, and the morning crowd was well into their rounds when we arrived for our 1030 tee time.

The course was in very good condition and was fun to play. The course is pretty open in its layout, making most shots playable. Many of the holes have elevation changes, and slopes that make some lies rather challenging to play, but still manageable.

The best part of the experience was the owners. They are extremely friendly, and make you feel at home. Top notch service that provided for a world class experience.

Highly recommend.

A well kept secret

Maxwelton is over 70 years old. It has that old feel that courses in Indiana of this era have. It is kept in extremely good shape considering the amount of play that it handles. When you first look at thye course you say no problem. After your eighteen holes you look at your score card and say "what happened". Very challenging and is good for repeated play. Tee locations and pin locations can totally change your game. Greens are small and challenging.
