Poor/Rude management
I liked the challenge, and the cart girl was super.
However, management decided to overbook tee times and forced us to skip holes.
Just after our tee off on the 9th:
“The group ahead of you is on the 10th fairway, so we need you to move along. You can skip this one, or the next one...it’s up to you. Go get a drink or something. Have fun!”
So there’s time for us to leave the course to get a drink, but not enough for us to just finish the hole? Gtfoh.
So we skipped the rest of 9, and guess what? The group ahead of us was still in the fairway, so there WE were waiting on them.
The group behind us wasn’t even close.
Tip: be an a-hole up front and require a max handicap rather than making someone pay hard earned money to skip holes.
Not for the average player
We are not the best golfers around, but we’re not that bad. We like to have fun being father and son, and enjoy being outside. But we were told we were taking to long, and we had to skip a hole and play faster. We never had to wait on a hole and the group behind us didn’t have to wait long either. Well we skipped a hole and that’s when the whole mood changed. Took us out of our game and the more we thought about it the more it upset us. Oh yeah that’s when we had to wait a few times before we could tee off. Needless to say we will not go back, there are a lot of nice courses in Kansas city that you don’t have to put up with that kind of bull. We will not be back !!
Strong
Pretty close to country club conditions and amenities. Great practice area. Played in the fall so had to hit off the mats on the range but chipping and putting areas were great. Played the back tees. The views and tee shots from there were spectacular. The par 3s were legit. Most were over 200. Tee boxes-10. Fairways -10. Greens -8. Rough-7. 4 hour and 20 minute round on Friday afternoon. Not bad pace for public course. From out of town and will definitely play again. If the rough was more consistent and people would fix their ball marks on the greens it would be even better. Great course. You will not be disappointed!
First Time Playing This Course
Overall, I was impressed with the course layout. Played from the Blue tees at 6500 yards. Definitely need to play this course to know where the best misses are because with the mature trees, it is easy to get blocked from reaching the green in regulation. I'll play this course again when I'm in the area.
Iron Horse Golf
I played on a holiday weekend, which ended up influencing the price. The course was in excellent condition and was extremely challenging depending on the tees you played from. Very easy to get into trouble if your shots were not placed exactly where you needed them. One of the nicest, if not the nicest, course in the KC area.
Among the Best Layouts I Have Ever Played
I cannot understate how impressed I was with the overall design, layout and conditions found at Iron Horse today.
Every hole is a gem and the architect, Dr. Michael Hurdzan is a golf course design genius.
There is no need to detail anything in particular. From the practice areas to the moment you play one of the most challenging Par 4 finishing holes I have ever seen, you'll get a taste of the best of all that a quality golf club has to offer.
The only problem I have with this beautiful place is that I live 500 miles away. I was fortunate to be able to find this location while passing through for work. Provided the opportunity, I will return again, absolutely.
To all at Ironhorse Golf Club in Kansas, thank you, and well done!
Wonderful course
This is a fantastic course in every way. However after a dozen times playing I have stopped. I am a single player and the course changed the online booking policy prohibiting single players to book on line. Even calling the course has no guarantee to play “ why don’t you call back tomorrow “. So I will take my $$$ to another course where online, any booking is possible.
Golf
Good layout, friendly & accommodating staff, pace of play was good.. lower the price just alittle & I would come back more often.
Course conditions
Course was in above ave. conditions for golf in early March. Always a challenge
Early Spring Round
Iron Horse is a true gem of a public course here in the greater KC area we love the late out and undulating greens. A true test of any golf skill level. We will definitely be back for more in the near future!!!
Good but not great
I like to play different courses as it adds variety and you can really find some hidden gems out there. Driving up to the course it is apparent that it is a nice course. The club house, chipping and putting greens, and driving range are all awesome. If you have never been to this course then it is important to note that you should arrive an hour before tee time. As part of your fees you get free use of the driving range to warm up. Everyone at the course was super friendly. Our starter Tom was on top of his game making sure to keep everyone spaced out to keep the pace of play. We did run into issues with groups both ahead of us and behind us around the turn and struggled on the back 9. It would help to see marshalls roaming the course to keep everything flowing.
Now for the actual course.
Tee Boxes: for the most part the tee boxes were good. There were several that were pretty beat up and left us searching for a good spot.
Fairways: pretty much every fairway was in great shape and if you stay on the fairway your day will be fine.
Greens: Unfortunately the greens are where this course lost its luster for me. Every single green from start to finish had so many divots that hadn’t been fixed that it made just about every putt impossible. For the money and the area this course is in you would expect the greens to be perfect, but to be honest it looked like they don’t care about the greens. It sucks when golfers don’t take care of their own divots but it sucks even more when the staff doesn’t care to cleanup and bring the greens back to perfect.
Hazards: This course can easily eat up several balls per hole if you are careful. The bunkers were all in good shape. Trees are a definite hazard on every hole and I’m sure in the fall they must look amazing. There is water in play on just about every hole. The creeks are pretty well hidden by over growth so it can be hard to spot. I personally wish the staff would clean up and show off the creeks as it’s a nice thing to see and hear the running water.
Overall this course would have been so much more enjoyable if the greens were in better shape. This course is about an hour drive for me. With drive time, cost, and overall look of the course I don’t think I will be going to this course again.
