Enjoyed the Course, but was very windy.
The soysia fairways make the course a little longer than the card says due to very little roll. Layout was nice and challenging. I do plan to come back sometime when the weather is a little more pleasant.
Favorite Public Course in Town
I was a member at Ironhorse for several years until I moved to Lees Summit, MO. I always enjoy getting back to the old stomping grounds. I think it provides the best layout in town for a public course. There are not 2 holes alike on the course. Pass of play was surprising fast with carts being on the path. Love the zoysia teeboxes and fairways. Great Staff!!
Need marshals
Two cmplaints... Group in front of us was rude, slow, and didn't understand their lack of ability to play. They were hitting from the blue tees (one guy hit from the tips) when they all should have been hitting from the white tees. Our round of golf took nearly 6 hours. Had there been a Marshall or two around this would've resolved the issue. Also, the course decided to change our tee time back 20 mins without letting us know. I'm presuming bc it was a golfnow time. Other than that the course and staff was enjoyable.
1st time playing - Cart path ONLY - windy
Booked online via Golf Now - $25+tax
Easy to find.
Drove in and was wowed by the practice facilities; putting green, chipping green and driving range...wow! All are much more comprehensive than my normal practice areas. Undulation, multiple targets, great grooming, etc. Brilliant!
As I walk inside, the undescriptive side door (a simple "Pro Shop" sign might be nice), I am greeted by the 'surprised' staff asking how they can help me. It just seemed awkward. "There's no water on the course today so you'll need to order back there in the kitchen". OK, thanks.
Small beef; I asked for a small bucket of balls and the kid handed me a token but gave ZERO instruction on WHERE to use it. Now, in retrospect, its VERY simple at this awesome facility, HOWEVER, how about you tell me to “go use it on the machine up by the driving range”?
OK, the course; pretty tough for a 1st timer. MANY holes requiring a different strategy from tee to green. I’m not going to break them all down but this is not a grip it rip with driver course. You have to pay attention and play the appropriate distance to the layup spot generally short of “the creek”.
Oh, the creek. The creek runs through the whole course and is in play on MAYBE every hole. I’m thinking really hard and cannot recall one hole without the creek. No biggie on more than 3-5 holes but definitely the theme.
The course flow, layout, whatever you want to all it is just NOT RIGHT. Messed up, if you will. There are more switchbacks and turnarounds than I’ve ever seen. We COMPLETELY missed the “fork in the road” to go to the clubhouse between the 9th and 10th hole to pick up the food we ordered while traveling on the cart. Reminds me that I PREFER courses that have “the turn” at “the turn” meaning they go by the clubhouse at the turn and don’t require you to JOURNEY to the clubhouse. This was not the only poor marking for path direction. Path direction (signage); SUCKS!
I’m a 12 handicap and shot an 89 with a 10 on 9. I’m not proud of this but thought I let you know how I did on the course. The day was “cart path only”, windy and mid – 60’s. I found myself at a disadvantage on several occasions by not having the right club in hand on the long walk to my ball. The “10” I scored on number 9 was a definite reflection of this. I did not deal with this restriction very well at all…ALL DAY!
So, the course, I actually liked quite a bit! The practice facility was awesome!! I would really like to play Ironhorse again! I hope next time to have freedom of driving on the fairways a having better access to the clubs I NEED once I’m there.

Fantastic Fall Golf
IronHorse is a top end golf course with great amenities. The weather was sunny and mid 60's which for November 10th in Kansas is incredible!
Great course
I recently played Ironhorse for the umpteenth time. It is my favorite local course in southern Overland Park. I am hoping I can receive a discount/rain check since I was only able to play nine holes due to a family emergency.
Love the course layout but greens are a little beat up. Fairways in perfect condition and bunkers in ok shape. As always, would highly recommend Ironhorse to anyone interested in golf in Kansas.
Very nice
Very nice course with lots of challenging holes. Fairways were starting to go dormant but greens and rough were in good shape. I like the course design with lots of elevation and deception. If the wind is up it can be a quite challenging
Disappointed
I have played Ironhorse several times both before they were purchased by Troon and afterwards. I will say its one of the best layouts in Kansas City and one that I enjoy. I just finished my round this afternoon which I was able to book on Golf Now to save some money. However, the price was the best part.
I was really disappointed in the pace of play, front 9 took 2 hrs and 45 minutes and wasn't managed at all. When you have a GPS system its pretty simple to manage, just pay attention to where your slow group is and send a marshall out to move them along.
Also the conditions of the golf course were really disappointing. Several of the bunkers haven't been dressed and are like hitting out of concrete, we haven't had a lot of rain recently so this was unacceptable. The greens were really beat up. I understand that public golfers don't understand how to fix a pitch mark but it was like the greens hadn't been cut and rolled in a while.
Overall its normally a great track but I couldn't recommend this place for the rack rate of $58. Only worth it if you get one of the Golf Now times.
Great Course
Weather was perfect! Course in great shape! Great layout! Highly recommend!
Great Course!!
Found this on Golf Now for $35 last week. Heard it was nice...and the rumors were true! Great challenge...not a grip it and rip it course. Lots of course management and shot selection. Plenty of risk reward also. Greens were fast and true. Must play if you get a chance!
Good condition tee to green
The course was in great condition from tee to green but the greens were full of pitch marks and rolled a little rough.
It appeared they may have been punched in the last 2 weeks and still had yet to make a full recovery. Will try it again in 2 weeks.
It makes me ill that people are too lazy to fix a pitch mark on a green when it takes 10 seconds, I fixed at least 2-3 on every green
Love the zoysia
Ironhorse is a great value. Course conditions were excellent (although greens were extra soft and a little bumpy due to recent rains). Shot value was great on every hole.
Great Course but Thirsty
Course was in pretty good shape overall. Frustrated that with a 1:00 tee time on a Sunday, there were no beverage carts at all. 90+ degree heat was hard to handle with nothing to drink.
The course is challenging but much fun
This was a fun but challenging course for me. Lots of streams, bunkers, hills, and trees; very pretty and well maintained. Accuracy and course management both important. Tee boxes were being aerated. Some new concrete work was in progress on the smooth cart paths. Fairways, greens, and bunkers were all in fine shape. I saw some rough and/or bare spots on the fringes around some greens, but nothing too bad. The GPS on the carts was generally helpful, but not always. I hope to play again...definitely!
Fun course
Extremely hot day, heat index over 100 degrees.
Pace of play great, course was in good shape for the heat and greens fast. Nice layout and good scenery. Fun day and fun course. Will be back.
Enjoyable Track
Best course in the KC area. Greens tend to be very fast making for a difficult time putting, but everything is very well taken care of. Only complaint is the constant fight of having to wait for staff on the course (Mowing, changing holes, driving construction machines), and other things that I feel can be distracting and done at a more appropriate time.
zapgap
Awesome.playing conditions were excellent.Pace of play slow because of group that thought they could hit longer than they did, many times well over 250 yards.Needed more Marshall work.
Nice Course
I really enjoyed playing here. The pace is well balanced, my friend and I played 18 in 3 hours. We went through one group that let us play through as soon as we came up to them, only had to wait one shot! My only complaint is the short grass around the greens are not consistent and in spots dead. I am sure that will correct as the year progresses.
