Wouldn’t recommend
We had a tee time around 7:30. We showed up early for our time and needless to say we had a terrible experience. The tee was terribly managed, the staff was incredibly rude. Wouldn’t recommend this course to my mortal enemy. The course was fine, needs some fixing especially with the bunkers, the pace of play was not great, only good thing that came out of this round was that I won money in a skins game.
Neglect
First time playing this course in 5 years. What a shame to see the course neglected the way it is. They have given up on the bunkers while the rest of the course is just trying to hold on. Poor pace of play. Staff was appeared overwhelmed and rude. This will be the last time I play here.
Deer Creek
One of the best layouts in KC. Too bad the owners won't put the money needed into maintenance. Greens were shaggy and traps were mostly pitiful, full of weeds.
Sad to see the course in this condition after playing it regularly when it was new.
Gone way downhill
I moved here 10 years ago and this was the premiere course in Overland Park. Wow, what a difference 10 years makes. It’s in horrible, and I mean.... horrible condition. There an open pipe trench on 11 that almost an osha violation. We decided to not even play bunkers because there’s carpet in them? Even for $29 it’s not worth the money - with the cheaper prices also brings people who don’t exactly follow golf etiquette. We were hit into three times on one hole. Don’t play here until they get this place under control, it’s trash.
Pretty Average
Deer Creek has really gone down hill since being taken over by Great Life. Most sand traps were un-playable, absurd amount of ball marks on greens (staff and players not interested in fixing them?), and the fairways are extremely average with lots of areas under repair. We didn't see a single marshal on course so pace of play was awful. To make matters worse the group behind started hitting into us. We also got paired up with two older guys that were really drunk and obnoxious, one of them threw his club on multiple occasions - which was terrible.
This is a real shame because the overall course layout and architecture is actually pretty good. There aren't any boring holes, but some are a little tricked out.
There are plenty of other great courses in the area - I would play those. In a pinch, I'd play here again and just hope for a better day.
Bad, getting worse
I have played this course numerous times over the past 5 years. In that time, the course maintenance has gone from good to poor to horrible. The pro staff are incredibly rude to the point after my last time plying the course I made a decision it was my last time. While I was in the pro shop, a customer called to ask for a tee time, and the staff were making negative comments about the caller. They seem to be bothered if you have any questions or ask questions. Then, when you get to the course itself, you will find geese have taken over the course to the point you are wading through their leftovers in the fairways and in the greens. Sand traps have become infested with weeds throughout the course. After you turn the corner and begin the back 9, the course condition gets even worse. How this course can justify the amount they charge in comparison to all of the surrounding courses is a question I would pose to anyone looking for a recommendation. Other courses within a few miles are equally priced, but very superior quality in comparison, and they have friendly staff. It’s too bad, this course was really a great location such a short time ago to have gone down so much in quality. Save your money, play at other locations within 5-10 minutes drive.
