Not a great course

First off, we paid $20, but drove an hour. Those two things sort of cancel each other out. The course was in pretty bad shape and we had rain the night before, but it was still muddier than you'd expect. Divots everywhere, crab-grass roughs. Even when it dried up later through the round the course didn't play very well. Greens were challenging, but also unpredictable at times. Staff was nice enough, but also not very attentive. We walked in, told him our tee time and asked for a bucket of balls, but instead of grabbing it for us he just walked off without a word and didn't return for around 10 minutes before addressing us again, completely negating our ability to warm up properly. Won't be returning. I'm usually not averse to driving this far out for a course, but this one wasn't worth it, even at $20/18 with a cart. If I lived closer and really had an itch to play, I might head down.

Worth the drive

played 2 times in the last few weeks and played at a quick pace both times. played black tees and found the course in great shape, pretty challenging for a 20 handicap. can't use your GPS on back 9 since it has been re-designed. this course was 25 minutes from my home but worth the drive, especially for great deal on golf now. will probably play from the white tees if we go back to help save some golf balls.

Will Play Again!!

Played from back tees, which was tough with no roll due to recent rain. Was happy to have carts off path, as it was super humid. 10 year old son and I played in 3.5 hours. Fairways and greens are top quality! Tricky gold tee position on # 9. #14 is reachable with a high blast...I hope to hit one next time I play it.

Awesome time

Played two days in a row as a twosome. Did not ever have to wait even once to hit our ball, rarely saw other groups on the course. Could have easily played in under 3 hours, but we decided to soak it all in and take advantage of interesting shots, aka play more than 1 ball per hole.

Good mix of flat vs. hilly holes, bring plenty of golf balls along however as you will lose some even on seemingly perfect shots.

2 minor complaints, had to dodge the sprinklers a few times, and there are very few yardage markers.

This will be my go-to course next time i get down to the cincy area

Price gjood, course so-so

Fairways in great shape. Greens were aerated but not rolled. Putting was a poke and hope. Nothing rolled true. Not many yardage or hole # markings. Facilities were clean. Service good. I will probably return.

Slow Play is an understatement

This is the first time playing Northern Kentucky Golf Club and it is will be my last. We planned to play 18 holes but with a 10:45 Tee time there was no way we would have finished before dark. We were backed up on the first tee box which is not unusual but it never got better once we teed off. It took us 25 minutes to play the first hole and we ended up skipping a hole to get around a slow group with one player who had to be shooting 15 on every hole. Then we got stuck behind a group of 5 players who were in a skins game and they must have been playing for a grand a skin because they were taking about 10 minutes a hole just to putt. We gave up after 9 holes (8 actually because we skipped a par 4) and just over 2.5 hours on the course. I like golf but a 5+ hour round is ridiculous. What made this more frustrating is that the course was in good condition and the greens were fast, but they did have some bare spots.

There are quite a few golf courses in Greater Cincinnati and since this one is about an hours from my home I will not be playing Northern Kentucky Golf Club again.

Great course

While this was my first time playing this course it was quite the test. The greens were hard and fast, but if you got your putt online it was going to go in. The greens rolled true. The fairways left a little to be desired as there was some dead patches and they were long, but still in decent shape. I got out right before the NKU women's golf team did and that helped my pace tremendously. I played 18 holes in 2.5 hours! The front 9 ia quite boring and flat, but the back 9 is all hills! I will be back.

Where is the next hole?

They need to provide a course map for 1st time players. We had no idea where the next hole was located, and when we found it there were blind tee shots to contend with, very frustrating.
The pro shop attendant could have made things easier for us if he only pointed out the 1st tee. We had to stop maintenance workers to find some tees. Lost balls when blind tee shots hid hazards.

Good course weird layout

This was the first time ever playing this course and I had heard good things from a former coworker about it so I was interested in playing. Overall the course was very well maintained, greens rolled quick, and it wasn't too crowded.
The only negatives were that it was very wet from all the rain and the rough was high so some balls off the fairway would plug or disappear even if you had a line on it. Overall other than the last hole #9 were good golf holes. #9 is a 300 yard par 4 straight uphill, kind of goofy bc if you lay up with a mid iron to the creek in front of it you still will hit a wedge at blind green. Then on the other hand if you go for it and don't make the green you can barely stand on the hill.
The back 9 on the other hand needed to come with a map. Out of the 9 holes only 2 had visible greens from the tee and 2 were par 3s. No real good pictures of where the greens were on the tee markers either. Overall the conditions were good and pace was great but I'm not a fan of taking 6 iron off the tee on a par 4 or not having a clue where I am aiming off the tee so I can set up a decent 2nd shot.
The true shame is that the NKU kids have to walk this hilly beast. They should adopt a mountain goat for a mascot bc they will be able to climb any hill around after walking this place.

Walked

Uneven experience

This course has a fairly dull front nine, but the back nine is much more interesting. The greens were lightning fast the day I played, and the pin placements were quite difficult - it turns out that I played in the afternoon after the club championship had finished that morning.
The greens are really quite fast and in great shape. On the other hand, there are few bunkers, especially on the front nine, and what bunkers they have are not very well kept.
The staff wasn't exactly on point, but I guess after having the club championship that morning, by the afternoon they weren't on their toes.
The GolfNow price of 27.50 to walk 18 was still pretty steep, and I probably won't take the long drive out there again unless the discount is larger. For golfers who really want a putting challenge, though, it might be worth the money and the trip.

Northern Kentucky's Gem and Best Value, Hands Down

I grew up playing this course as a member and have played on and off with family since becoming an adult. The course used to be private but has since become semi and offers awesome deals through GolfNOW and Groupon. I've played here no less than 100 times and can vouch, this is truly a player's course... But it doesn't feature a whole lot of the fluffy amenities (which you shouldn't expect at this price point anyway).

The previous reviewer called the front nine mundane... Hardly. While I will concede that it is less dramatic than the back nine; the front nine starts off with a tough par 4 opening hole (tee shot with water on the right) and moves to a 615 yard par 5 (from the tips) with a hard sloping right to left fairway. The third hole is a 170 yard slightly uphill par 3 that requires an accurate tee shot through a chute of trees and doesn't offer a reasonable birdie chance until hole 4 (a driveable par 4 with OB right and thick heather left). This is followed up by a 190 yard par 3 that is again, slightly uphill. Birdie chances at par 5 6th hole (legit eagle chance for long hitters) and par 4 7th hole. And trust me, those birdies will come in handy on the tough/long par 4 8th hole and tough par 4 9th hole, the latter of which climbs the hill that you descended after teeing off on the first hole.

The back nine, as I said earlier, offers plenty of thrills in its own right and starts off requiring 2 accurate tee shots on 10 and 11... You will have your work cut out for you. The 10th hole is a downhill par 4 that features dramatic views and a slight dogleg right. #11 is an uphill par 5 that features a flat, straightaway drive but requires pinpoint accuracy due to a creek on your right and a trees left (a bailout wayyy left will not hurt you). This one is tough to reach in two and the green slopes severely from right to left. Play short approach shots to the right side and you'll have a pin high 10 footer up the hill for birdie. A birdie chance is given at the driveable 12th hole (for long hitters) but the risk isn't worth the reward. A simple cut drive out towards the left edge of the right fairway bunker will be rewarded with a short PW to a receptive green that slopes back to front. Anything short risks funnelling off of the front edge of the green. #13 is a beast of a par 3 @ 200-210 from the tips, over water (all carry) and no bailout left (water) or right (down a steep left to right hill with woods). The shot requires precision and penalizes anything less. I have hit a knock down driver several times from these tees when into the wind. Fortunately, the drop area is right in front of the green and will allow you a chip in chance @ par or @ least a salvaged bogey. #14 is a uphill/downhill par 4 birdie chance that is pretty basic and a very minor dogleg right. The 15th hole is a bit deceptive but a good drive will offer up a birdie chance. Hug the trees on the right with your drive (it's a bit of a blind tee shot, can't see landing area); everything feeds right to left and a drive straight down the middle or with a draw (for righty golfers) risks going OB left. Bailing out far right isn't terrible but you will have a blind approach over trees. #16 provides a birdie chance and insanely accurate drivers of the ball will have a chance at eagle on this drivable par 4. Check your ego and hit a hybrid/long iron out into the fairway, you'll be left with 100-125 to the hole and a great chance at birdie. For most golfers, a 3 wood is too much club off of this tee. 17 is a short par 3 of only 120 yrds but features a tee shot that is 100' above the green, it's a really fun hole and usually just requires a knockdown PW. A white flag will yield birdies but when you see a blue flag, be happy with a par. The 18th finishing hole is a great one that provides a good chance at a closing birdie. The straight away tee shot is visually intimidating if you struggle with a driver because OB is on the right and trees are lining up the left side. Just swing smooth and put it out there. Water is left of the green and a simple hybrid puts you in position to hit a smooth wedge in tight. Knock it stiff, clean up the birdie, and collect your skins @ the 19th hole.

A few things that you can expect:

1) Awesome greens. They are some of the best in NKY and are the best at this price point. They consistently roll 9-12 (depending on tournament schedule, weather, etc.) but will always hold your approach shots. FIX YOUR BALL MARKS!

2) Great fairways but usually a little on the softer side.

3) Awesome bunkers/sand.

4) Fantastic putting green that rolls true to the course.

5) Not very much of a range. There is a range and you can hit a driver. With that being said, the range is off the beaten path and requires overnight camping gear/meals to get too. Okay, it's not that bad but it is out of the way and doesn't have the best teeing areas, yardage markers, etc.

6) A FUN AND EXCITING ROUND OF GOLF!

Very Enjoyable

The nicest greens I have played on in years. Roll is extremely true and speed was quick but fair. Really well maintained golf course. My first time there. Very nice people in the clubhouse and on the course. Very enjoyable round. Nice drive out and back. I came from East side of Cincinnati - took me about 35 minutes.
