Decent Course for $$$
Course is overall pretty easy. This is not a great place to play if you don't improve your lie. THERE ARE HUGE PLACES OF GRASS MISSING ON MOST HOLES. Your ball will roll to the places where there are no grass and/or the huge holes by the cart path. I would say it is 85-90% coverage on most fairways. If you don't mind rolling your ball a club length, you should be able to get a little grass under it and have a good time. The greens were in pretty good shape.
Good course for the money
We had a windy day but I played well and shot an 81, so I'm loving it right now. Course was in good shape and well cared for.
What I'm not loving is GN new policy on promo codes, which requires you to book a tee time 3 days in advance. Do you know how difficult it is to get 4 people together with different work schedules on the same page 3 days in advance! This new policy sucks, I should be able to use the reward as needed.
Get what you pay for
Only cost $16 to play through a Golfnow deal, so I don't think it's fair to review this as if it were a resort-quality course. It is what it is. Fun layout, with some challenging holes. Staff was friendly and courteous.
As for the course itself, well, the greens were in pretty good shape. If you want a good value, and can overlook some deficiencies, by all means play this course. I definitely got my $16 worth...
Fair Course
Always a treat to play Lone Oak. Bermuda is still dormant. Although I still consider it winter rules the course is in great shape. It was a busy Sunday afternoon but with a foursome didn't get backed up at all. Nor did we hold anyone else up. Will go back and play again. Can't wait.
Winter golf
Second time playing this course and both rounds were this winter. The course was in much better shape. Greens were nice.
February round
Course was in good shape for the time of year. Couple of greens little rough but overall what one would expect this time of year. will be back for more play.
Good course
Good course. Pace of play was really slow do to members playing 5-6 per group. Played this course many times and never had pace that slow almost 3hr front nine.
It was cold!
Decided to play here on what might be the last round of the year. It was cold and windy! The course is always a good one to play no matter what time of year it is. You could definitely tell that the maintenance was in off season mode. The greens were in good condition though.
Ehh
I would recommend this course for a very cheap afternoon HotDeal if quality isn't of most importance.
The tee boxes are cut (or not) so that you can't tee any shot up low. The rough is very thick.
The greens are pretty good. They were uniform.
Several holes have uphill approaches so they play longer.
It has plenty of trees. Often located right around the landing zone, so you must play to the correct side of the fairway. I was in tree trouble on 4 holes after decent drives.
For $10? Sure, play it. Anything more? No.
Double standard
overall the course was in decent shape. The fairways were good, greens rolled pretty good(little slow), tee boxes were chewed up some. course condition was over was pretty good. they probably could trim some of the weeds down around some of their signs. My biggest gripe was their appearance policy double standard. my buddy bought a collared shirt from their pro shop because they weren't going to let him on the course because he had a tee shirt on. that's ok except the guy behind the counter in the pro shop also had a worn t-shirt on. DOUBLE STANDARD!!! Lone Oak should hold their staff to the same standards as their patrons. BOO on you Lone Oak!!!
Terrible course
Awful course. Greens, fairways, tee box, bunkers, you name it all in awful shape. Staff and members very rude and definitely not even worth the $10 and drive. Won't return to this course.
What a joke.
I went for the first time to look the course over. While there I got my clubs out and decided yup goo to the driving range. It was a Wednesday morning at 10 and already 80 degrees. I had on a under armour t shirt, no collar. I paid for the range balls and on the way out the door the same guy that sold me the range balls told me no collard shirt, no driving range. I told him he just sold me the balls and he said no driving range or putting green without a collared shirt. I tried to explain to him that the rules is never implemented as know one wants to get there nice shirt sweaty before playing. He said he didn't care, gave my money back and said leave. I will never be back.
Stay away
Old man in pro shop is RUDE, the course is garbage, and, ironically, they advised me not to use golf now.
Where's the grass?
The fairways are complete dirt. They still have them burned out like its the middle of winter even though it's almost May. The parts that aren't dead grass are just literal dirt. 4 or 5 tee boxes are closed, so they've just cut s small patch of grass in front of them and jammed all four tee boxes side by side in that small area. The tee boxes that are open were rarely cut, so teeing your ball up low was a complete non option. The greens however were in great shape. I feel like I actually overpaid with a $10 round.
Golf in January!
Thoroughly enjoyed the surprising opportunity to play Golf on this course in January!
Conditions were really good considering time of year. Greens were incredible considering the season (16 deg low today)
Fairways are Bermuda so not much you can say about that, had to be pretty precise with ball striking which I was front side(backside not so much.
Staff were Sooo nice and met some fellow golfers who are members that invited me to play in their Skins games this spring, super nice
Was also invited to play in the scramble tournaments this year
I couldn't have been more satisfied with my experience here
Lone Oak Country Club - Excellent course
One of my favorite courses in the Lexington area! Several very challenging holes; #6: LONG uphill par 4 requires a solid drive and a stiff 5 iron at a blind green to have a prayer for a birdie put. #11: deep par 3; not much danger of going OB, but tough to reach the green without a hybrid (unless you carry a 2-3 iron). #17: beautiful par 3, signature hole, that plays every bit of 210 yards (from the blues) over water to a retained brick paver mouthed green that is protected by pines on 2 of the remaining three sides. Hit your 4 iron the slightest bit fat and it will most definitely be wet; MISS RIGHT!!
Long drives are rewarded on #'s 2 and 7 (the two par 5's on the front); as long as you are not scared to take a 180-210 yard swing over water. I am usually happy with a 235 yard drive sitting in the center of the fairway, but would most likely be forced to lay up if you don't reach out over 265 with the big dog.
The back nine at Lone Oak will make or break your round. #'s 12,13,14 and 15 are definite birdie opportunity holes (#'s 12 and 13 are my favorite and second favorite holes in town). You do NOT need a 300 yard drive to make birdie, but you had better hit it STRAIGHT off of the tee. Lots of OB on the back nine. Leave the driver in the bag if all you need are pars; or put your purse down and go for it! I have taken many birdies here, and several Eagles... And have also donated many good balls to the neighboring farm for double bogey.
Lone Oak reserves the truest and most honest greens, in my personal opinion, that remain a deep green nearly year round; one of my favorite characteristics of the course. At Tates creek, I sometimes feel a full swing is needed for a ten foot put; at the UK Club, a sneezing fly may blow your ball 12 ft past the cup. Lone Oak found the perfect medium for the golfer to work on his/her most important club in the bag. Also, the layout of the course design is top notch. I do not enjoy going straight up then straight back for 18 holes (Connemara). A well designed golf course should have bends and tree lines, nooks and crannies, dog legs and fairway bunkers; you will find all of these attributes here.
I would like to acknowledge Dr. Lee, Phil, and Jeff, who you may find in the pro shop behind the desk. These three are always happy to see you, and would love to hear about your round or even sit and chat about the weather. They know and respect the game, and are genuinely pleasant guys. I won't name any other names, but there are a couple of other employees that you may have the misfortune of scheduling your round the day that they are on the clock... They seem more worried about having the carts back on time so they can punch out than if you enjoyed your round, and will absolutely never remember your name (even the members!).
Love this course!! Everyone knows everyone; lots of regular weekday games that they will surely invite you to join, should you say hello to the group. Hit 'em straight!!!
This course is in poor condition
They have really let this course go, fairways and bunkers are a mess. The bunkers have been under repair for 3 years and the rest has just gotten worse.
