Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center
About
Named after the Great Hall of the Norse god Odin, Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center was conceived more than half a century ago when six Cumberland residents decided that they didn't want to have to go all the way to Portland for a decent round of golf. They persevered with their idea and eventually established an 18-hole, par-72 course right in Cumberland Center. The golf course has a traditional layout that is heavily lined with trees. Accuracy is an important part of the round but if you can manage to hit straight, you'll have a good game. Strategically placed bunkers also lurk along the greensides and fairways. In addition to the golf course, there is a driving range and practice green. Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center is a scenic and more affordable alternative to other options in Portland.

Nice folks way too busy!
Don’t even try to get a tee time on a weekend. If you do be aware of you surroundings. Not much cover from errant shots.
Nice course BUT---
July 20th with 8:20 tee time, 2 for 9 holes. Was told it would be $34 each and was charged $40 each. Asked Brian, why, and he said he charged us for 18 holes. Asked for refund or merchandise and said we could have a rain check. Being from Wisconsin, rain check would do us no good as we were leaving. Very disappointed at their policy and lack of customer service as it was his mistake. Obviously, we will never play there again and would recommend getting the rate you are quoted.
Round 2
Second time playing course. Staff very helpful, courteous and professional. Grounds crew respectful of play! Course in great shape for this time of year!! Challenging, long course, especially for me, but I enjoy playing here. The club house, bathrooms and grounds are immaculate!!!
Will play here again when I return to Maine next summer.
First Tme
Played this course for the 1st time. At checkin, staff at desk was very professional and courteous! Explained course, cart path rules and which tees to use for my age group and ability. Only issue was trying to find 1st tee. Another staff person outside got me going in the right direction. I joined up with 2 others who welcomed me to play with them. The gps system in the cart was excellent and very accurate. I found the course in great shape even though it had been quite wet recently. Fairways were beautiful and most were nice and wide. Greens were in good shape and very fast. I found Val Halla challenging and fun. I will definite play there again!!
Very good golf course
Val Halla is in excellent condition. The fairways and greens are in great shape which is amazing considering the drought conditions we have experienced this year.
Great value
Well worth the green fees. Fairways are in good shape and greens as well. Did find the greens difficultly to read but may have been due to pin placements.
Must play smart, and lay-ups,
Play your distance to your advantage, and you will be rewarded with a good score
Nice Challenge
Valhalla is a moderately challenging course that is in excellent condition. The staff is pleasant, professional and efficient. Some holes are wide open but most have an enjoyable challenge.
Challenging course!
I like this course a lot. It forces you to play lots of different shots and each hole is interesting to look at and fun to try and solve.
I found the greens to be particularly challenging with many of the holes somewhat crowned, which sent putts off in various directions, within inches of the hole. This makes scoring a bit unfair, but the course is super otherwise, well kept and nicely groomed.
Good course
ValHalla is a challenging course that is enjoyable to play. The fairways are soft and easy to hit off of. The greens are quick and true.
NOT a four star course!
Visiting the Portland, ME area I chose to play this course based on the four star reviews I saw on Golfnow. After playing the round, I can't figure for the life of me how this course got rated four stars. There wasn't a cart available when we were ready to tee off. We had to wait for one to be brought up and when we got it, it had trash left in it. The cart paths are all dusty, dirt roads. The fairways had narrow straight strips cut in them that looked like it was just the easiest way for the greens keeper to mow as opposed to a purposeful design. On half the holes my wife had no idea where to tee off because the red tee markers were missing. Some greens were is good shape, but others were very patchy. There were a couple of spots that were roped off due to waterlogged ground even though it hasn't rained in over a week.
All this being said, we only paid $30 each for the round, so you might say you get what you pay for. I totally agree. Just don't rate it a four star course when it clearly isn't. The staff seemed generally friendly.
Worth playing
I found Val Halla to be a challenging, well-maintained course with excellent greens. It has some really solid golf holes and will definitely penalize errant shots in many spots. As a senior I found it an incredible value compared to other courses of this caliber. You will enjoy it, but bring your "A" game.
Decent
The course was nice, the golf was good... the grounds crew however was extremely inconsiderate. It felt as though we were getting in the way of their work. I've played a lot of courses, but never had a person blowing grass driving down the middle of the fairway while you're trying to swing.
First Time Surprise
Had a great time playing round with my son. Great layout and wonderfully maintained. Little soggy in some fairways due to heavy, recent rain but overall excellent. Could use a few more signs for directions to next tee given less than intuitive layout of course. Will absolutely be going back!
Val Hallas
Had an amazing time at the course. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately it had rained alot the day before so the course was wet. Nothing they could do about that. Most fo the greens were great! Had a fantastic time and will be looking to go back real soon
Tough grader from Texas. Glad the staff was friendly. Can't find red tees when we don't have them. Fairway striping is pretty common. Hey, at least we got three stars from Mike!
