Named after the Great Hall of the Norse god Odin, Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center was conceived more than half a century ago when six Cumberland residents decided that they didn't want to have to go all the way to Portland for a decent round of golf. They persevered with their idea and eventually established an 18-hole, par-72 course right in Cumberland Center. The golf course has a traditional layout that is heavily lined with trees. Accuracy is an important part of the round but if you can manage to hit straight, you'll have a good game. Strategically placed bunkers also lurk along the greensides and fairways. In addition to the golf course, there is a driving range and practice green. Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center is a scenic and more affordable alternative to other options in Portland.

A little disappointed in conditions.

The positives; staff was friendly, pace of play was great, layout was good except for three holes on back that mirrored each other, amd the price on golf now was awesome.
The cons; conditions were fair. The fairways were spongy and wet. No there hasn't been a lot of rain. No roll on any shot. The greens were inconsistent and didn't roll true. The grass in fairways, rough, and greenside were incredibly hard to get through. Yes it was green and yes it's a fine course for families etc. I'm not sure low handicappers would be thrilled to play it.

Staff was helpful & friendly. Course was well maintained & challenging from blues. Thankful to have GPS on carts because of some blind holes.

Big Brother golf carts

The course is nice and the greens are lightning fast. The carts have GPS and you can order food around the seventh hole to pick up on the way to the back nine. But it was weird, if you go somewhere you aren't supposed to, the cart will stop dead in its tracks and force you to go in reverse back to the cart path. It was kind of a pain in the butt. A few times the cart stopped even though we were still outside the area where the "no carts" sign was. It was frustrating.

Thunderstorms Approaching

I haven't been in Maine in about 30 years and this is the first time with golf on my mind. After reading the reviews here on Golf Advisor, I decided to give Valhalla a try and wasn't disappointed. Roger was so helpful, patient and friendly - giving me directions during several calls I made, setting me up with Ping rental clubs, and giving me a rain check when the summer thunderstorm finally hit on the ninth hole. The course is in good shape and the greens are fast. You get your exercise walking as the course is fairly challenging at my skill level even from the whites.

Good value and course

I've played this course several times and it's always in good condition. The greens were rolling true and the fairways were like a sponge. We got stuck behind two groups walking that were slow. Another twosome snuck on after the turn. This is a great course for the money.

A Very Hot Rain Check Day

Came back after work the next day to play the back nine. It was a hot ninety degrees and I was walking. Back nine is sort of like links golf - more open fields and not as many trees on the back. But it is still treacherous if you are not in the fairway. Course in good condition after the thunderstormy night. Greens in good shape also but a bit slower - probably due to the rain. The course layout on the back nine is confusing if you are walking - pay attention to the layout on the scorecard. I didn't play as well - probably due to the heat and the extra walking due to the confusion.

good

Everything was great except the guy in the clubhouse was a bit confused about our reservation. At first he asked if we booked through a different website, then took about 3 minutes to finally check us in. Eventually he logged us in and we only paid a total of 47 $ for 2 doing 18 with a cart. Excellent value. Would play this course anytime for that rate!

A Challenging but Playable Public Course

We were pleasantly surprised by this course. It had plenty of challenge especially the front nine. Most holes had serious trouble in back of them making distance control on the approach shots critical. The carts had high tech GPS that helped a lot. Some of the fairways were narrow with thick woods to take in errant drives. Greens were reasonably fast and in good condition. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Excellent Value

It was an enjoyable round. The greens are a bit slower than some that I've played, but they were in excellent shape.

Not that it made the round any less enjoyable, but the carts were a very high tech. A display gives you yardage to the green, directional help and you can even order lunch. Just make sure you do what it wants you to do. One cart path was closed due to a vehicle blocking it for a few minutes. The cart didn't like that. At one point it actually would not go forward anymore and would only go in reverse, as it was in an area it didn't like. It took a few minutes to get to a place where the cart was happy. It was a running joke the rest of the round.

I will be playing this course again.

Lovely course to play on vacation

You are greeted by a friendly staff and the players all seem to be happy to be there. I happened to hit a day of beautiful weather and the course reflected that beauty. The course is a bit narrow so bring plenty of golf balls as the woods are thick. The greens were in terrific condition and surprisingly fast. The fairways were in great shape. On many holes you had to gauge whether to layup or go for it as hazards were located in challenging positions. The carts have range finders which helps when not having played there before. Overall a fun course to play, a great value for the money, and recommend it if you are in the area vacationing.

In a year where courses have been devastated by the harsh winter Valhalla is in great shape (all things considered).

Valhalla is GOLF "the way it should be"

The autumn palette of colors surrounded Valhalla's lush green fairways. The greens were well-nigh impeccable with a manicured fringe and well-raked traps leading to sometimes severe and often subtle undulating putts. Stimpmeter speeds were state championship level and an absolute delight and challenge to anticipate and then stroke. The twosome we matched up with were long-time devotees like ourselves and made for a splendid walk in the park on a Friday afternoon. The website booking and discount fee capped off a totally positive experience. I've been playing golf for 55 years -- this easily made it into the top tier of pleasant rounds.
