Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center
About
Named after the Great Hall of the Norse god Odin, Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center was conceived more than half a century ago when six Cumberland residents decided that they didn't want to have to go all the way to Portland for a decent round of golf. They persevered with their idea and eventually established an 18-hole, par-72 course right in Cumberland Center. The golf course has a traditional layout that is heavily lined with trees. Accuracy is an important part of the round but if you can manage to hit straight, you'll have a good game. Strategically placed bunkers also lurk along the greensides and fairways. In addition to the golf course, there is a driving range and practice green. Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center is a scenic and more affordable alternative to other options in Portland.

Hidden Gem Just North of Portland
I finally got up to play Val Halla after hearing good things about it for a few years. It is tucked in a remote corner of town a couple of quick turns off of Rt. 9. Val Halla is very active on golfnow.com, so it can be quite easy to get a good price on as long as you have some flexibility in playing time. I was paired up with 2 senior female members who were very nice in showing me around on my maiden voyage. We started on the 10th and moved around nicely until we hit the first tee where things took a turn for the slower. The 12th hole is a long par 5 that first bends right and then left at then end. It is a tester. On the front, the 9th is a great finishing hole. that requires a precise, long drive and then a second shot that cannot be short due to the staunch pond guarding the front. The food and drink was pretty good at Rachel's, but I was told it tends to be better in the evening. It is a happening place in town with all kinds of social events on the schedule. VH is a great choice for public golfers north of Portland in an area that has several great private clubs but fewer public options. I would check out golfnow.com to find a great deal at Val Halla.
Good value and consistent greens.
Val Halla keeps their greens in great condition. We enjoy playing there because of its convenient locations and level of play.
This is a great course
This ia a great course. Some open holes and some challenging holes which are great. very friendly staff!
Busy day we were there
There was a youth clinic going on the afternoon we played. 1st 2 holes were closed. Course was otherwise good challenge. No water in most of the ball washers but might be due to other priorities that day. Golfnow deal was ok until I didn't notice that the cart was not included which added $18. I'd go back but ask some questions on the phone before booking.
Good course for the money
Good course for the money. Well taken care of fast greens.
Excellent
Excellent value and the course was in very good condition.
Challenging but enjoyable
Our area has had record setting rain for several weeks but the course was nevertheless in very good shape. The drainage must be above average since we found very few wet areas. The fairways were very playable and the greens showed no wear and had good speed. We'll play there again for sure.
Great course
I booked a time at a great rate for a course of this caliper and found it to be a lot of fun and had very nice large greens that rolled true. The fairways and tee boxes were in good shape The course was wet due to a lot of rain so I did not get any roll in the fairways. How far you carry the ball is the distance you got with the driver. The only really hard hole was the par 5 12th which took me 3 good hits with woods to reach the green. All in all it's a very nice fun course with great conditions that I would love to play again when it's not so wet.
Excellent golfing experience; terrific value for the money
Great "hot price" on the Golf Now Internet. The greens were in wonderful shape. Fairways were fine. Would have liked a flag color system to identify the position - front, middle or back. Staff at the restaurant was great. BLTs and beverages were delicious. Loved the New England / Boston atmosphere. Overall a nice golfing experience! Recommend getting in a round if you are in the area.
always challanging.
with all the rain the fairways were soaked in the low areas but green were firm and true. great course to play and i will soon after the heat wave has gone.
Great Greens, Fairways, and Tee Boxes
Had not played Val Halla for over 25 years - now living in Florida. Played it twice this week. I will definitely be going back again. Not the easiest course around but, boy, is it in great shape. The fairways in most cases were like green carpet, thick and luxurious; almost impossible to get a bad lie in the fairway. Greens were in great shape as well; a bit tricky to read some; but that just makes for a more interesting round. And the tee boxes were, by and large, in very nice condition with lots of grass. They obviously have worked hard on the tee boxes unlike a lot of courses that leave this item for last. A lot of the holes are a bit mundane, but there are several which definitely rise to the level of memorable - specifically #11 par 3 over water to an uphill green - an absolutely gorgeous hole. Also #17 another par 3 which measures 190 yds. to an uphill green - I had to use my driver to reach the green. Not my favorite hole (too long), but when you get on the green, don't forget to take a look back at the tee boxes - truly beautiful. All in all, a nice course in wonderful shape. And GolfNow makes it affordable.
This course is perfect for the amateur golfer looking to challenge themselves on a fair course
I am a 100+ golfer who is looking to get better and bring my game into the 80s-90s. I found this course in excellent condition and challenging but fair. It was one of the more enjoyable rounds of golf I have played. I plan to play many more rounds here and continue to improve. The staff was very welcoming and easy to talk to. They also are more then willing to help describe the course and give pointers about the course that I normally would not be able to realize on my own. Things like the speeds of the greens on certain holes and how to shave strokes by making certain shots in certain places. Overall an excellent experience.
Nice course, in excellent condition
This course was in immaculate condition, fairways had lush grass with no weeds or bare spots, greens were smooth and true, white tees were good. The front tees (green) are nice and short for a high-handicap player, but are placed on the fairway, so are somewhat uneven. The course was not scenic, but very pleasant to play, with some quite interesting and challenging holes. We would play it again.
Gem in Maine
Great course, very well maintained, Greens were aerated but sanded and playable and value from Golf Now was incredible.
