Freeport Country Club
About
Freeport Country Club is conveniently located just 20 minutes from Portland, Lewis-Auburn, and Brunswick-Topsham and it is also only minutes from one of Maine's most popular attractions, the L.L. Bean flagship store. Freeport itself is also a charming destination, with plenty of shopping and activities available. The nine-hole layout is gentle enough for beginners but there are still a few challenges in store. The holes are tight and golfers will be confronted with the occasional elevated green. The course is known for having some of the area's best maintained greens. There are also three ponds that come into play. Whether you play a nine-hole round or a full 18 holes, the golf course is a great price, especially for the country club-quality. The well conditioned driving range at the club is also popular.

Beautiful Day Nice Couple
Yesterday, as far a weather goes was a ten. Sunny, cool and slight breeze. Course looked good, fairways mowed, greens tight and tee boxes ok. Course management is working in drainage issues and filling in ruts. Water troughs throughout course are ball gobblers. Almost impossible to find your ball, once your ball disappears into the them. Oh well!! Couple I was paired with was very nice, and patient with me!! Actually, I was paired with them at another course years ago. All in all a pleasant day!
Private Golf Course
Played yesterday, on second day of major East Coast heat wave. Just me and one other golfer were on the course. It was cooler and breezier than the previous day, not as hot and humid. Since I live most of the year in Florida it was pretty pleasant weather. I arrived early and got out way ahead of schedule! Great!!
Course was much better groomed than previous times I played there. Course still needs to have major ruts filled in, pretty rough cart ride. Water on course was very cold which was welcomed by one who keeps myself hydrated.
Will be back before I head back to Florida in October.
Crazy Layout
The guy in the clubhouse explained to me the layout of the course, even with that in mind we were completely confused by the layout. Friendly people, but the weirdest layout I've ever seen.
Convenient
Sunday morning and only a few people on the corse. Cool.
Great Shape
I’ve played this course several times. It’s challenging yet fun! This was the best course conditions at Freeport, I’ve ever experienced! Fairways were mowed close, greens excellent, rough cut way back. Only thing left to do is eliminate the ruts so your walk or ride is not so bumpy. Paired with 2 other guys, very pleasant afternoon!
Will definitely be playing course more this season!!
Long grass
Just arrived in Maine for the summer. Ironically, the weather forecast was fantastic, sunny and warm. Made tee time through “hot deals” and played with two other nice guys, who were slightly better than me. Having spent the last 7 months in Florida, I found the conditions challenging. Fairway grass long, rough was really rough, lots of ruts from winter not repaired yet!! Some areas were very wet and muddy. Enjoyed the day, the round, the other guys......can’t wait for course to be in better condition!
See You Next Year
Got to course early, since it’s the end of the season, I was able to get out early! It was a cool, overcast day and very comfortable for fall play. Greens were fast! Fairways very spotty with lots of fallen leaves. Had hard time finding my ball, losing more than I usually do. Conditions were ok for this time of year. I enjoyed my last Maine round!! Leaving for Florida, for the winter, in a few days. I will play Freeport again when I return next summer.
Twice around the horn
I played 18, whites 1st nine, reds 2nd nine. Nice variety of holes. Course in pretty good shape! Tee boxes and greens great condition, fairways ok. Pace can get slow if you get behind walkers or students. Not everyone courteous to let a single play through. Staff was friendly and efficient. Will play Freeport again!!!
Good For Beginners
Course conditions not great, however, the greens were lush and receptive so no complaints there. The layout is a little funky and confusing, definitely took 9 holes to figure out where to go. Staff was very friendly. Laid back atmosphere, really good place to bring a beginner or junior that's learning. Overall, its worth the GolfNow price of $20 for 18 with cart. Wife enjoyed it as she's learning (and they sell beer!).
Don't bother
Lost seven balls in middle of fairway. Drainage ditches w/ water, tractor/mower ruts up to a foot deep and filled w/ water, more weeds that grass in fairways. The greens were in the best shape of any part of the course and were only average in quality of play
Freeport
The course was in rough shape. I understand that we have had a lot of rain, but the long cut grass could have been picked up and the ruts smoothed over.
I would like to try the course again in better conditions
Time with my son
For our 3 rd annual golf trip with my 9 year old I settled on a good price for two. Staff was friendly but the course was not equally pleasant. I found the layout confusing and possibly dangerous due to the close proximity to other holes and golfers. It was a busy day and i managed to lose just as many balls in the fairway as the woods. My son and i had fun. We had enough fun after 9 holes and packed it in.
This course was the cheapest around so we thought we would give it a try. Big mistake. There is no fairway, nor is there a rough, all could be considered short rough or long fairway. Lost more balls in the fairway due to the wet conditions. Some walking the course were wearing boots! The lay out is very confusing, some holes have several options to play, and its never clear which one to play, or even what direction to hit. Wouldn't go back for free. Pay the extra money and go someplace else.
Andrew-- this is Matt from the Club. We appreciate you taking the time to give us feedback on your round-- thanks also for your high marks on “Staff Friendliness” and “Pace of Play”. As for conditions: there’s no question that April golf in Maine (especially after the March and April we’ve had this year) can present some challenges! We’d love to talk more about your experience and put you back in a “happy place”— give our office a call at (207) 442-8725 or send an e-mail to info@freeportcountryclub.net. Let’s get your season off to a positive start!
