Well Done!
Played here as part of a golf group outing on Sunday- Shotgun start. Course was in EXCELLENT shape- Greens about 11 on the STIMP meter but rolled true, fairways well groomed, Tee boxes almost perfect. As a County Govt owned course, this blows away a lot of Private courses and Country Clubs I have played. Design and Layout are very imaginative- lots of blind shots. Play course management- a yardage book would have helped. Overall, an excellent course open to the public. Play it now!
Now I Remember Why I Don't Like Playing This Course...
I haven't played Little Bennett in probably 6-7 years. After today, now I remember why! The good points: course in excellent condition (beautiful vistas, landscaping, and fairways); 10 minute tee times allows a great pace of play with groups spreading out on a difficult course; friendly staff everywhere on the course; and a nice snack bar after the round. The bad points: the greens were almost unfair (I'm not a scratch golfer, but stay between 15-16 hcp) and these greens were unputtable; good shots were penalized on approach because you couldn't stick a green; even if you hit a green, and these greens are so hard and sloped the ball will run off. For a public course, I'm at a loss why MCG has the greens this difficult and hard to play. I play golf for fun and enjoyment--today was neither of those things. It's a beautiful course and well kept, but I will not return. I will go to other courses that provide the opportunity for some fun and not the frustration I experienced today.
Great conditions but unputtable greens
I have played LB many times in the past and have always enjoyed my rounds there. The conditions are always excellent and the routing is so secluded - it feels like you are in your own private park. The autumn trees changing colors make it even more spectacular. But I nearly walked off the course today because of the condition of the greens. First of all, they had coated the greens with enough top dressing to build a sand castle with. I completely understand the need to take care of greens (especially on a public course that gets a ton of play), but the large surface granules affected numerous putts throughout the round. And there was no notice on the website that the greens were under repair. But worst of all were the hole locations. On probably 10 different greens, the holes were cut on such a severe slope that it was impossible to stop the ball near the hole. Every putt that didn’t hit the cup ended up off the green. 2, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14, 15, 18... all were terrible locations cut on severe slopes. The green on 13 was the worst of all - it was only lacking a clown nose and a windmill to be complete. There was literally a dinner plate-sized flat spot where the hole was located. Every other part of the green near the hole was a huge slope. Anything below the hole rolled all the way down to the bottom portion of the green, leaving another 40’ putt back up the hill. Anything above the hole was impossible to stop and ended up down the hill. Even putting from the sides was nearly impossible. I can understand having penal pin placements if you’re playing for a green jacket or a big silver trophy. But these locations were so bad, they penalized you for not hitting an absolute perfect shot. Even one that was 99% solid ended up 30’ from the hole. I am a good player (7.5 index) and a solid putter, but it was not enjoyable at all to putt on these greens. I will not return to LB if this is how the course will be set up - there are too many other great options in the area to endure a 5+ hour round costing $80 with unputtable greens.
Beautiful Setting, Excellent Condition, Thoroughly Unenjoyable
Little Bennett is in a beautiful setting surrounded by woods. The course is in better shape than any course I've played for less than $120, with soft greens and fairway, Even taking these positive into account, it isn't a very enjoyable round. It seemed like nearly every hole had extreme elevation changes. The fairways were very narrow, which i can appreciate as a challenge, but way too many blind shot. I probably won't be playing this course again unless there are no tee times available at the other local courses.
Beautiful, But Difficult
I haven't played this course in over 5 years, and it will probably be another 5 before I come back. I think Little Bennett is a beautiful course--well kept, beautiful dogwood trees and environmental areas, with lush grass, and beautiful views of the mountains. The fairways were in excellent shape, and the rough was cut down a bit, so reasonable to play out of. However, the greens were treacherous! As always (and this is why I haven't been back for a while), they are extremely fast to the point of almost being unfair. Holes #1, 9 and 18 are extremely difficult because of the uphill/downhill tee shots, and other holes have visibility problems with the elevation changes. You really have to think your way around this tract, and make sure you are smart in your club selection. Lots of odd bounces that can put you into trouble. I'm really okay with some of those issues, but the greens just really turn me off. The staff--inside and out--are extremely nice and welcoming. If you're going to play Little Bennett, take your patience...and plenty of extra golf balls.
Staff/Course
Excellent Staff both Club House and Course Maintenance. Course in great condition. Layout challenging.
