Not as good as it was
We booked online, prices very good and included lunch. However, the sandwich was not worthy of a gas station and tasted like it was made the previous day, just ham on a soggy burger roll, nothing else. The fresh-brewed iced-tea was good. The course was in good shape, but not as good as last summer which is the last time I played there. The course has a lot of fairways that slope to the side, and it seemed like a lot of doglegs. The layout is nice and for the price, you can't beat it.
Greatly improved
We avoided this course for four years because our last experience was so terrible. Well good news, it appears there is new ownership that has made great strides and improvements. Course was in very good shape. Whoever drives the equipment to condition the traps needs to smooth over the wheel marks but otherwise the traps were good. Pace of play was much improved and it is a good value. Cart paths need a lot of work.
Good value for 25.00 plus lunch.
Course is in ok shape. Greens are badly bruised as I don't think anyone repairs their divots - I personally fixed 5-10 divots on every green.
Bring everything you need with you as the proshop was not selling tees or golf balls!
Overall a good value for 25.00 but I wouldn't play again for anything higher.
Poor outing
This course may be a good weekday course but stay away on the weekends. It is overpriced for the course and you will be out all day and waiting every hole.
Best deal around
Great course for the money. I play here often because the tee times are often under $15 on golfnow. It is a difficult course, for sure, and playing here is always fun and interesting....and of course at times frustrating. Don't lose your temper on 13, haha. Pace of play is usually good and players usually show etiquette on the course, but today when i played I got stuck behind.........a FIVESOME. When I made mention to the manager, he immediately sent out an employee to split them up, but they didn't listen. Fortunately they at least picked up the pace on the back nine so we weren't waiting as much.
Great Track
Have never played a course with more friendly staff. From the minute we got there it was like we were coming from the White House. Everyone was super friendly, courteous, and personable. I will be back here soon. You CANNOT beat the rates for a nice course that isn't too far from DC. I would certainly recommend this course to a friend. I was very surprised at house nice the overall experience was. When I saw the price I thought "this has to be a dump with old/outdated carts. I was wrong. it is a hidden gem just an hour drive away.
Lot of sloped fairways
Overall the course was in good shape. The course had several blind shots an sloped fairway. I will play the course again. I played with a friend and we were paired up with another twosome and we all had a good round of golf.
Challenging course and a good value from Golfnow
Had been recommended this course by a friend. Surprisingly few groups for early weekend morning so pace of play was good. Staff was friendly with tips on some of the more challenging holes. Lots of elevation changes and blind shots on the longer par 4s and par 5s. Overall course conditions were good. Will definitely return.
this is a hidden gem
West Winds Golf Course is a hidden gem. The pro shop is basic. The front desk is basic. But once your on the course its magical. The course is immaculate. And the holes are unique. The 14th hole is long and intimidating,,,, but fun. there are a lot of cool holes but the best thing about West Wings is the layout - condition - and the personnel. I would recommend this course to every level of golfer.
Frank Romeo
Nice track. Cart paths need some work but overall a cost effective , nice place to play golf. Challenging off the tees with blind spots but fairly marked.
Greens need work
I play this course regularly among others in the area and sadly the greens at West Winds, once some of the best in the area, have fallen off greatly. I and 11 of my regular golf buddies were looking to join a club and west winds was high on that list based mostly on cost but certainly on reputation. Unfortunately the greens were disappointing.
Recently I and several of my buddies played each course within a 15 mile radius to include Whiskey, worthington, PB Dye, Hollow Creek, Little Bennet, Maryland National, Musket Ridge, Glade Valley, Clustered Spires and Rattlewood as well as some of the courses in Ellicott City and Virginia. Certainly West Winds can't compete with the budgets of some of these courses but the quality is far below sister course Glade Valley and not even close to that of Clustered Spires. Ball marks, bare patches and creeping crab grass make it difficult for any sort of consistency. In addition, pin placements are often not changed for 4 or 5 days (confirmed by one of the members who seemed to live at the club and know everyone he came in contact with). This takes it's toll on that specific area and the cups are often caving in. If putting is the most important part on the game, and experts agree it is, watch for your score to soar at West Winds.
Although the wet and long spring can take some of the blame for this it is obvious that lessons can be learned from courses close by whose greens are in near perfect shape. A simple cup move from front to back or side to side on a daily basis would be a simple and effective step in the right direction. Hopefully time and attention will change the quality but for now our group of 12 has decided to continue looking for membership elsewhere.
The rest of the course was in fair to good shape with the exception of the sand traps. We teed off relatively early recently and found the sand a few times. It was obvious that that the guy raking the traps was either half asleep or half cared about making the traps consistent. There were undulations, bumps and tire marks that made getting out of the trap difficult for this 7 handicapper. We actually witnessed the guy driving the little sand-trap tractor a few times. He drove around in a few circles, spread the sand and didn't even stop to check his work. Attention to a few details and we'd likely have signed up for membership after our round.
Certainly, there are many good things about the club: fairways were lush and the course allows you to hit many types of shots, the food was decent and they've even had some music when we've finished. The one member we always seem to run into raves about the course and has come close to talking several of us into joining. If he's not the membership director he should be. Don't remember his name but he was on his 3rd round of the day.
We will certainly continue to play West winds but with all the choices in the area we will go where the conditions are best and the price is similar. If the choice is between sister course Glade and West Winds and we want a better putting experience Glade will win our business.
Good course
Enjoyed the course. Great value through golfnow.com. Course is in pretty good shape.
Quick rate of play, for the time I went out
Good deal via Golfnow. Got out at the right time- wait was minimal, played in about 3.5 hrs after being paired with two others. Has some challenging holes, and a few blind shots. Warning - cart paths are ROUGH- better driving in the rough/fairways.
Westwinds
I used to belong to Westwinds. I have not played in a while due to the golfers lack of golf rules.
It was much better this time, but the short holes had a lot of green divots that had not been repaired.
for the price, this was a great deal
Not worth the money and time, stuff and owners treat players very poorly
Not worth the money and time, stuff and owners treat players very poorly, unfriendly, even a simple question brings out aggressiveness. No idea how people like that get to be a golf course owners, I guess money this days buys everything.
Greens are excellent
Surprised by the condition and pace of plsy. Great layout and definetly worth the price
Fun but a bit tricky
Thought the course was a lot of fun. was grouped with a couple of members that helped us out each hole. One of those courses that you need to play a couple of times to really start enjoying it.
Interesting course, excellent value
The course was in excellent condition. It's an interesting layout with a lot of hills and very challenging. This course will find beginners a fit but I enjoyed it. The staff was very friendly. My only complaint is that the round took a long time to play due to the fact that it was a very busy Sunday morning. Considering the condition of the course and the very reasonable price, I can't remember the last time I felt like I got a better bang for the buck at a golf course.
Very nice cource
Great course, I'm not a strong player so it played tuff but I had a wonderful time. Some narrow fairways makes it interesting. Overall a great course. Would play here again.
Overall conditions
I have played this course in multiple occasions and it's get better ever time. The ground keeping crew has done an excellent job keeping the course in the best conditions.
