Black Rock Golf Course
About
Black Rock Golf Course may be one of western Maryland's newest courses but it's located near some of the country's most historic sites. Antietam Battlefield and Harper's Ferry are just a few minutes away from this scenic course. The opening holes of the layout are tucked into the Shenandoah Valley while the back nine climbs uphill, offering views that stretch across the Appalachian Mountains. The golf course has plenty of holes that will please long hitters, but mature trees and thick rough frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy. Traps protect the front of most of the greens and you'll come across dramatic undulations on some. The par-4 13th is arguably Black Rock's toughest hole. This sharp dogleg right has a massive tree to the right as well as a pond right in front of the green.

Nice layout but,
The course has a nice mix of medium, short, and longer par 4's from the back tees. I also enjoyed the varied par 3s. Some are downhill, some uphill, and are of varied lengths.
The par 5's are especially entertaining as they allow longer hitters to reach in two, evev from the back tees.
The primary reason I did not give a higher review was the nature of the fairways. The were cut very high, and often my ball found a fairway lie that was more like landing in a light rough.
Just not a fan
Better courses for similar rates in the area imo. Definitely worth the extra drive to play somewhere nicee. High, bumpy and unlevel teeboxes.
Surprising round
Thought it was going to be wet and missed the rain.
Impressive
My first time playing Black Rock. Went with a buddy who frequents the course- glad I did because I’d have gotten lost a few times... until he explained just keep the cart going straight when paths intersect. Until then I was a little lost.
The course is in fantastic shape for a government run course! I was very impressed with the maintenance level of care it receives.
They have a make shift driving range too which is nice.
Very friendly gentlemen running the shop too.
I’ll be back
Challenging and beautiful
Let me start by saying I love the layout of this course from hole 1 to 18 the course seemed to flow. The pace of play was slow but for a sunday morning this is not shocking. The conditions were very nice given the lack of rain this year with plenty soft fairways and challenging rough. Overall a great day I will be back before the years up.
Nice course but needed mowed.
Nice course. Overbooked and slow. Tees needed mowed and greens had lots of mud spots on them.
Fast
Fastest round on this course I have ever played. Matched me up with a twosome and enjoyed the company.
Always enjoy!
I always enjoy playing this course. Some of the fairways were a little space. The greens were in good shape. I like the layout of the course
Summer trip to Maryland
Very nice course! Even after two days of rain (about 3+ inches) the course was playable...wet (cart paths only). Played in 3:15. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would gladly play it over and over again!!
Needs a Little Attention
Let me say first that I really like this course--I like the layout, the views of the mountains, and the variety of holes (and shots). But, I was surprised that Black Rock was not in its usually pristine shape! The tee boxes were chewed up with long grass, the fairways had burned up places throughout the course and long stems of weeds, and the bunkers were lacking sand. Additionally, the pace of play was awful...it states on the scorecard "playing time for 18-hole round should be FOUR HOURS or less" (capitals on the scorecard). However, our round was 4 hours 35 mins. We waited on every hole, every shot, and I never saw a marshal. They either overbook the course or are not monitoring play to keep the pace to their stated time. I was not happy, and basically lost focus (and desire to play) on the back. It was 94 degrees and slow, slow, slow. It will be a little while before I drive the 1+ hour to get there.
Just Average
After reading all the good reviews I thought I would give this place a try. In my opinion just a very average course. The layout of some holes is quite strange. Pace of play was great on the front 9 but by the time I reached the back there was a 3 some playing at a very slow pace with no one in front of them and would not let anyone play through, the ranger did nothing to speed them up he was just under a tree watching 3 groups pile up behind them. Greens and fairways were in good shape but the bunkers are all in need of some work and were basically just mud. For $40 there is some better options in the area in my opinion.
Good value
This was a good value. The course needed to have it's grass cut, but with rain they have been behind in that area. The course was challenging, but fun to play. The staff was friendly. My playing friends said they had a good time. They enjoyed the course as well. If you are looking for a great value and course, play Black Rock.
