Great price, but arguably worst greens in Maryland
Seriously, the rest of the course was worth repeating but RedGate layered their greens with sand to the point where balls accumulated enough small stones as they rolled to make it feel like they had been in bunkers before the shot. I would play again other than the fact that I value putting as a part of the game and I couldn't take putting seriously here.
Low handicappers STAY AWAY, Not worth time or $
jPlayed this today, great weather, good staff, but
the greens were in despicable conditions.
The greens had more sand on them then a baseball diamond. More rocks and sand then actual grass on the greens. A great placed approach shot would be penalized by untrue greens caused by thousands of rocks and sand. .
Not a very fun time because the conditions substantially affected play.
Would be good for the beginner golfer only, you can take your time. Pace of play seems to not be cared for by anyone.
Wont be back but for $20 I did not expect a country club. I have spent less then $20 and played much much better courses around me.
STAY AWAY
Good Evening Golfer,
I am sorry you were frustrated with our aerated greens. We did discount our rates to account for the aeration. We appreciate your feedback and business. Long Drives and short putts.

Not worth the time to play
Course in poor condition--fairways, greens, and especially bunkers--for the past 4 years. Summers are worse as there are more brown areas in fairways than there is grass. Fairways cut to 1st cut of rough height at other public courses, and rough can be extremely high and tough to hit out of many times during the year.
No real course maintenance done here.
Not worth the time or money to play this course.
Hello Golfer,
Thank you for your comments and your business! We have a new Super and are committed to greatly improving course conditions. The goose issue causing the dead spots has been resolved as we have purchased a bird dog.
Long Drives and Short putts,
RedGate GM
Course in lousy shape
I don't know how others who have submitted a review of 3 Stars, or more, for RedGate come to that conclusion.
The fairways are way too long even when cut--it's like they mow the grass without blades on the mower. The rough hasn't been cut in quite some time.
Leaf removal is a joke notwithstanding the GM's comments in response to Reviews that they blow leaves several times a day. Hasn't ever happened.
He says that taking leaves off RedGate is "challenging". Well, the previous Superintendant and his crew had no problem getting all leaves off the course during the leaf removal season. Not so with the current administration as there are pockets of leaves on several holes, even in late December, where one can easily lose a ball.
The greens are bumpy at best and inconsistent from one day to the next, and hole locations are changed only weekly.
Most bunkers (sand traps) are totally unplayable as they have nothing but dirt and stones/rocks in there. Only 5 holes have had bunker renovation, with new sand, done during 2015--13 holes have not been worked on.
It's been 4 years of the same kind of course conditions--terrible.
Pace of play on weekends, and even some mid-mornings during the week, is at a "snails pace"--5 hrs.+ Too many people playing the "back tees" when they can't break 100.
Hello Golfer,
Sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your experience here at Redgate. Our current conditions are not on par with in-season conditions as it is now winter but we have adjusted our prices accordingly. Thank you for your feedback and a Happy New Year to you!
GM
Not worth the money
I played this course last in December, but have played it many times in different seasons for 20 years. I will not be returning anytime soon. The greens are inconsistent and not maintained well. They are bumpy, not always cut have goose droppings on them. many have weeds and dead spots.
The fairways are poor, with inconsistent surfaces and poor edges, lots or holes and rocks on edges and near greens. The tee boxes are a joke, and some holes tees have little or no grass.
The bunkers are terrible, hard sand, no sand, plastic liners show, different sand.... not all are raked or stirred.
And I see that "Billy" the course manager responds to criticism, with lines like, "our course is in great shape, greens are very good," etc. But Billy: get real, read the reviews and FIX these problems, your comments make you look like you have no clue! You can pretend these criticisms are not true, but that changes nothing. The course has potential, but it is mismanaged and not maintained well at all. So stop the propaganda and correct the problems we all see.
And the pace of play is VERY slow, there are rangers around (sometimes) , problem is they just ride around and 5-6 hour rounds are common. The carts are old and unreliable, and often the course is not watered during hot summers.
There has been NO improvement in the course conditions at RedGate since this Post in Dec. 2015, and NOTHING has been done to the course this Spring--2016. Go play somewhere else where the grass is cut and there is sand in the bunkers and the greens are smooth.
Aeration off not, I refuse to play this course anymore due to the combination of poor conditions and slow play. The practice facility is just as bad. It used to be in rotation in a league I was in, and everyone hated it.
Contrary to what the GM said here and in response to other posts, the conditions at RedGate have been as deplorable for the past 4 years as is described here, and that is in ANY month, April, June, Sept., December--or any month in-between.
Dear Golfer,
Sorry to hear of your frustration. Please understand that our winter conditions are quite different than in-season conditions and that our rates are greatly discounted during the winter months. Thank you for your business!
RedGate GM
Excellent greens!
The course overall needs some work but the greens were in excellent shape.
Good Morning Golfer,
Thank you for your feedback. I was happy to hear that you were treated to a fun and enjoyable golfing experience here at Redgate GC. We greatly appreciate your business and hope to see you out on the links of Redgate Golf Course again soon.

Played Redgate once, but not worth it
Redgate is a hilly, narrow, wooded course in Rockville. Several hole layouts are just plain bizarre, with steep downhills and severe slopes. The tee boxes needed cutting and the greens were awfully slow since they had not been cut or rolled. Paid too much, but at least we found a place to play at the last minute on a 60 degree day after Thanksgiving.
Hello Player,
I am sorry you did not find our layout appealing. We appreciate your patronage and hope to see you again.
Kind Regards,
Billy
Redgate
Leaves on the fairways lost ball in the middle of fairways couldn't tell the difference between fairways and rough.
Pay more play somewhere else
Good Morning Guest,
Thank you for your feedback. Our goal is to treat every guest to a fun and enjoyable round here at Redgate GC. I was sorry to hear of your frustration relating to our course conditions. Our course conditions are a high priority. We have been blowing leaves several times a day for the past 3 weeks (except during high volume times as not to interfere with play). Leaf removal at Redgate has been extremely challenging given the number of mature leaf producing trees on our property. I will certainly pass your feedback onto our Head Superintendent. Please know that we greatly appreciate your business and hope to see you out on the links of Redgate Golf Course again soon.
Kind Regards,

Good Value...@ less than $50
The greens started out soft and spongy due to previous days' rain; they firmed up some by the back 9. The course was green (not pristine) and enjoyably challenging. GPS or local knowledge of your playing partners should be leveraged. There is a fair amount of elevation change and blind approaches...some holes will present both on one shoot! I will play the course again...at the right price of course. ;-)
Dear Golfer,
thank you for your feedback. We were happy to hear that you enjoyed your experience at Redgate and hope to see you again soon!

fun course
The course itself wsa interesting and fun. It will never be boring. However, the fairways and green conditions were quite disappointing. Nevertheless, I would like to come back and try another round definitely.
Thank you for your recommendation. Our fairways and greens are in super condition. please play Redgate before winter hits.
Best,

Solid public course in Montgomery County
RedGate isin good shape for a public municipal course. Tee boxes a bit scruffy, but fairways, greens and bunkers in pretty good shape. Not a lot of water but plenty of blind shots. Overall good value, played for $40 including cart. Nice staff, easy to get a hot dog and a beer at the turn. Recommend this course!
I was happy to hear that were treated to an enjoyable golfing experience here at Redgate. Thank you for your business.

This course is in horrible condition
People who give this course 4 and 5 Stars must be playing a different course than RedGate.
The pace of play is 5 hrs on weekends. Any course marshal that shows up doesn't have a clue as to how to get slow players moving--and there are many, many slow players at RedGate.
The course conditions have been horrible for the past 4 years, which is when Billy Casper Golf started its lease of the course from the City of Rockville and the company now runs the course--actually they are running it into the ground--little if any maintenance on the course. The bunker renovation started in late May and ended in early June with only 5 bunkers done, and 4 others converted from sand to grass and the grass died from lack of watering. There are 13 bunkers still to be done--sometime in the future.
Grass in the fairways is spotty at best. Only course in the DC area I've seen that has more bare areas in the fairways than grass.
Greens are just awful. All have patches of crabgrass in them!!!! Nowhere else do you find that. And the greens are so slow, like putting on velcro.
People who pay $20 to play weekdays in the early a.m. would be better off going somewhere else and add some funds to the $20. Most of the County courses are in far, far better condition than RedGate.
The poor course conditions have been the same since Sept. 2012--just awful.
Go play somewhere else and you will get your money's worth, even if it's more than $20. The reason the fee is $20 early on weekdays is that Casper Golf is hurting for people to play RedGate as the knowledgeable golfers have seen the poor playing conditions there so they do not come back, even for $20.
Thank you for your feedback. Our goal is to treat every guest to a fun and enjoyable round here at Redgate GC. I was sorry to hear of your frustration relating to our course conditions. Our course conditions are a high priority. We will continue to dedicate both capital and labor in our agronomy department to enhance our guest’s experience. Please know that we have a new management team in place. I will certainly pass your feedback onto our Head Superintendent. I drove the course on Friday 11/20 and it is in very good condition. We hope to see you on the links of Redgate Golf Course again soon.

Good Course for the Money
First time playing this course but it won't be the last. Greens were a bit slow, a lot of roll in the fairways. Overall a good solid experience. #16 was a beast of a hole. I moved back a tee to make it more challenging. Fun day.
Thank you for your feedback. Agreed #16 is a great risk reward hole. We are in great shape. We appreciate your business.

Good Value
It was worth $30-$40 but you get what you pay for. Course is short and is showing the stress of summer weather. Tees boxes need water and grass. Greens are playable.
Thank you for your comment and playing Redgate. I was happy to hear that you enjoyed the experience. We are in great shape and hope to see you again before winter hits.
Sincerely,

If you've got over 5 hours to kill
After seeing a number of tee times still available for Sunday AM on Saturday PM, my wife and I decided to revisit this muni owned by the City of Rockville for a 9:16 AM tee off.
By 10:40 AM we were stacked up 3 groups deep on the tee 4 tee. At 12:04 PM we mercifully putted out on 9 and headed directly for the truck.
There's never a reason to endure almost a 3 hour 9 hole round, but allow me to share why we had to on this day:
1) 2somes allowed to tee off without pairing up (groups in front of us; 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, 4)
2) 2somes not pairing up during play. Despite asking both the groups in front, and behind, us, both declined to pair up moving forward.
3) Players assuming they could reach every par 5 in 2
4) Players that could reach every par 5 in 2
5) Players spraying and praying - then playing from whatever fairway they ended up in
It was an unfortunate and aggravating experience.
I understand the budget limitations of a city owned municipal course. But it's also not an excuse.
I don't consider myself a golf snob, I will play with anyone assuming they follow a certain decorum, but more importantly, they play fast.
Unfortunately, what I saw at Redgate on Sunday, the former is relative and the latter non-existent.
Dear Guest,
Thank you for your feedback. I was sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction concerning our patrons. Our goal is to treat each guest to a fun and enjoyable golfing experience. Poorly Maintained
Tee boxes chewed up. Fairways brown and weedy. Greens unkempt with crab grass.
Dear Guest,
I was sorry to hear that you were disappointed with our conditions. please play us again. Our conditions are super. Thank you for your business.

Up and down fun
Red gate is a fun track with lots of targets to shoot at. Some of the greens(11) and fairways need some love but are still playable. There were a number of hole that test your skills from the tips. Be ready for some uneven lies and elevation changes. My advice go play this course, FUN!
Dear Golfer,
thank you for your feedback. We greatly appreciate your business and hope to see you again soon.

good course
Great pace of play during the week, weekends are extremely slow. The fairways are in good condition, the greens are excellent, the tee boxes and bunkers are in need of work.
Dear Golfer,
thank you for your comments. We value your business. Our super doubled the seed order this fall for the tee box's. Hope to see you soon.
Thanks,

Where are the Marshals?
We booked a foursome on a lovely Wednesday afternoon. I haven't played Redgate in quite a few years, and the others had never played. Unfortunately we did not have the best experience and will choose other local courses moving forward.
Overall the course was in pretty good shape given all the rain. There was some standing water and the sand traps were packed/wet, but fine for a recreational round of golf. The staff in the clubhouse was friendly as well. Unfortunately, it seems like my experience was more tarnished by the behavior of the other golfers and the lack of staff on the course to keep things in order.
1. A pair jumped in front of my group and teed off out of turn. There was no starter present, so it was very much a free for all. The pair in front was walking, and it was very clear that they were playing multiple balls and practicing on the greens.
2. A single woman player coming up behind decided to hit into our group and then continued to play through without asking. The bottleneck in front of us then became the walking pair playing multiple balls, and a single player hitting from the red tees.
3. Thank goodness for the summer solstice, our round took over 4.5 hours to complete.
Overall, an uneven day on the course. An afternoon playing golf will always beat working in the office. But a lack of control and etiquette can make for a frustrating afternoon.
Dear Player,
Thank you for your feedback. We do have Marshals on-course daily during the season. I was sorry to hear of your frustration relating to our pace. We will continue to hold conditions, service, and pace in high regard. We greatly appreciate your business and hope to see you again soon.
Warmly,
Billy

Good Evening Golfer,
Thank you for your feedback. Yes, we aerated and the greens were very sandy. Sorry to hear about your aggravation and I completely understand. We did greatly discount our rates. We'll be in great shape by the first week in April.
Thank you,
