Extremely slow pace but no control by marshal. All tee boxes are beat up..
Not very long, but don't let the distance fool you, there's plenty of challenge here. The course plays right into the Carroll County landscape and as such, there are plenty of elevation changes that keep you guessing and force you to be accurate. Flat lies are hard to find and if you're not experienced with having the ball above or below your feet, you may be in for a tough time. There are a few holes that you let you grip it and rip it, but for the most part, you'll leave the driver in the bag in favor or woods and even irons. It's a secluded course with plenty of quiet and some great views of the surrounding farmland.
Course condition was fine, with the one exception being the tee boxes, which were in tough shape. Many boxes are narrow (meaning people wear down the same small spots) and it's been a dry, dry, summer (meaning it's hard for grass to grow back) so it's hard to fault the course, but it was hard to find grass on a few boxes. Greens and fairways were in fine condition.
Value is stellar ($35 for 18, including the cart). If this were closer to DC, it could easily be $60-$75 and for the money, you're getting an interesting layout in good condition. Hard to beat that!
My playing partner and I were the first ones out, so pace of play was obviously fine for us, but I've played in the past during the day and never had trouble with slow rounds.
All in all, an excellent value and a fun course to play.
First Impressions
Westminster National Golf Club staff are first rate, friendly and helpful, this was my first time playing this course, the staff took the time to get me up to speed with current course conditions. As for the overall condition of the course I would say fair, I was a little disappointed in the condition of tee boxes, the bare spots were more than I am used to, cart paths are in need of serious work, rough and unusable in most places. Fairways and green were in excellent conditions considering the latest round of high temperatures the area has experienced. As for rating the difficulty of the course. If you like a coures to give you a good challenge on your ability to control your shots and read the fairway this us the course for you. Enjoy Yourself after a round on this course you will know exactly what you really need to work on with your game...
Good Value
This isn't a course that I'd want to play all the time, but as a change up its nice to work in as the price is usually right. At 5950ish from the Blues, if you're a big hitter it's more about positioning, not always just gripping and ripping. The greens were a little slower than I'd like, but they did roll true, so it was a matter of adjusting to the speed. Played in just under 4 hours so I can't complain for a Sunday round.
Annual Trek to Westminster National
From the tips, this course is <6000 yards, but it will test every aspect of your game. There are no level lies, bounces that you don't expect, narrow landing zones on most all the holes, and crowned greens! It's extremely hilly and adds yardage--but be careful, because taking a longer club into the green will have you bounding off the side or rolling off the back into danger! Those crowned greens are exceptional...fast, true, and smooth! They keep the greens in exceptional condition and will rival some of your top private courses. The fairways are in good shape, and the rough can be penal. Bunkers were also in good shape. The only area that could use some TLC were the tee boxes. The pace of play was excellent...4 hours, so no complaints. This course is not a long-hitter's challenge, but it will test your skill at hitting your target, stopping your approach shot on the green, and putting. And, if you don't hit fairways, it will definitely test your scrambling ability!! Fun course as long as you come with patience and a good attitude.
Great course for the price
This course is a GREAT value for the price. Course is in terrific condition and has some really unique and funky holes which make things interesting. My only complaint is that there was no marshal to keep the pace of play moving along. We were in a two some and somehow were playing behind a group of 6 which was really slowing things down. I had played the day before and had issues with pace of play as well. This is my only complaint, otherwise it’s a great course.
Course was in very good shape. My game wasn’t but that’s the way it goes.
This course is Aces
I had an ace on #12 so I am totally partisan about this course. However, course conditions were perfect. The greens are beyond perfect. And the staff was awesome. After the round we stopped in the pub for a pint and mentioned the ace. One of the staff offered, and delivered, by driving out to hole 12 and brought me back the flag to take home. That is above and beyond. Not a long course but some of the toughest greens you will ever approach and putt. As a plus handicap I thought I could dominate this course. Not the case. Total target golf from tee to green. Leave the driver in the car and test your short game. First time playing but will be back again and again. It was worth the 2 hour drive.
Congrats!!
