Poor shape
The course is in awful shape. The fairways are in great need of attention (lots of crabgrass and not mowed), greens are very poor, and the rough is very rough. First time I played there and will not play there again until conditions improve. Positives - pretty much nobody was there so played a quick round of golf and with the Hot Deal it cost $15 to play.
Challenging, great pace of play and views, good value for the money
After many five-hour rounds at area courses, we were glad to find Wakefield. The course is challenging and there are great views on many of the holes. I don't agree with the negative reviews as I find the conditions okay. My buddies and I have played many other courses in the area and find that this course is a great value for the money.
Could be great
This course has seen better days. Conditions were poor at best. Fairways poor, rough poor, greens poor. You can see the greatness of the past on the holes, but its just been let go so much. If someone would take over the course management, put some money into just taking care of it, it could be good again.
course condition
I have played this course atleast a half a dozen times this year and not once have i seen any sign of maintenence or any crew members and it sure does resemble the way the course looks. Other than airration earlier in the year i guess they cut the fairways and call it a day.
Great layout but in poor condition
Course is in decline but is playable with great and challenging layout. Go for it if you want to just hit some balls. I played winter rules. Try to get a discount rate. I paid $9 with cart on Friday through GolfNow. The Pro is very cordial, so say hello.
Course was terrible!!
Wakefield Valley is in horrible condition!! 15 years ago the course was one of the best around, but no more! Most of the greens are almost totally gone! Brown patches all over!!! Absolutely horrible!! Rough needs to be cut also! Too high & constantly looking for your ball! Very under maintained! The Gold 9 totally shut down! White & Green 9's open. So sad! Hopefully a new owner will buy it & fix it back up! I will not be playing there again for at least a year!! Would not recommend to anyone right now!
Great golf holes, but course is in poor condition. Spent a lot of time looking for balls off the fairway.
Not a lot of fun. Spent too much time looking for tee balls off the fairway. Grass was very long. Greens were not well maintained and had died out in places. Beautiful country setting and some really nice holes.
Nice course but in terrible condition
It's a shame to see such a nice course completely neglected. A lot of the greens were mostly burnt out and brown. The rough was filled with clover and weeds.
Tall Roughs
Played the Green and White Course.
The Green course was better maintained but thats not to say it was perfect. The rough is quite tall. You pretty much have to stand on top of your ball to find it. The greens were fine but the tee boxes needed to be cut.
The White course was worse. Not only were the roughs not maintained, they were covered in dried up old grass. The fairways were longer than they should be as well. Found grass patches over 3" on the fairway. The greens were being aerated even in the middle of May.
The staff was friendly, though i didn't think they should be mowing the grass on a Friday afternoon. The course has a beautiful layout and some unique holes but make sure you land in the fairway because that rough will make you work for decent shots.
All in all i gave it a 3 because the price they are charging is one of the lowest in the area, it's a well laid out course, the condition is good enough, and we played in about 4 hours with a bad 4some in front of us.
Not the greatest course, but worth the discounted rate
I paid $9 (plus $2 golfnow fee) to play this course at 1:30pm in the afternoon. Rough was pretty unkempt and it was easy to lose the ball in it, but I'm not sure I could have found a better value than playing 18 holes for ~$10.
What happened???
Years ago this course was ranked in the top 10 public courses in Maryland. Now it is the worst course I have ever played. I wish I could give it 0 stars. It looks like the whole course has been condemned. The driving range was closed. People were hitting balls from the parking lot into the range up the hill to warm up. WHAT??? The little snack shed between the green and white course is falling down. They should tear t down before it collapses onto someone. I played, or tried to play, the gold course and the green course. There were NO FLAGS in the greens. How can there not be flagsticks in the greens? Fairway was longer than most roughs. The rough was knee high. Cartpaths were nearly undrivable. The gold course crosses a road for holes 5, 6, and 7. The gate was closed to these holes so I couldn't play them. The green course was not much better. The fairway was shorter than the gold course, but still as long if not longer than most course's rough. But there were also patches of fairway that had no grass. Greens were long and slow. Cartpaths were awful.
I saw that the course is in foreclosure, so I hope that someone buys it and puts money into it to return it to a premier course. Right now, the course is UNPLAYABLE. They should not call themselves a golf course. Anyone who plays this course will be upset that they paid money to play on this dogtrack.
Don't bother
Used to be a Golf Digest "good-value" 4-star course with an interesting layout and slick greens. Now it's a poorly attended hayfield with greens that run about 3 on the stimp meter (assuming they were consistent which they weren't). No wonder their entire membership walked out this year. It took my twosome of 15 handicappers over 4 hours to play with no groups ahead of us. Why/ We probably lost a dozen balls within 20 ft of the "fairways". Why? The rough was ~5" deep and the balls would sink to the bottom. The good news was that we found more than we lost (implying others were as unlucky as we.) We called the pro shop later and asked the attendant (not a pro) how were the conditions? "Great," he replied. Fool me once . . .
Wonderful layout but needs some attention
This course one can tell was laid out wonderfully but it definitely could use attention. The rough was quite high for hackers like me and the greens on the White Course had recently been aerated and were not well sanded making it rough putting. The staff was quite friendly however and I was paired up with a lovely couple who made the round quite enjoyable. I would play here again probably not until the greens have grown in.
White course and gold course is in terrible condition.
Second time playing on this golf course and yet to see any improvements. White and gold course was not groomed was in pretty terrible state. Bunkers were filled with stones and rocks. I wouldn't even try to hit it out of the bunker in fear of damaging my clubs. Fairways were more like roughs and greens were sandy and did not come close to being playable as it was or has been aerated for god knows how long. Green course however was in pretty decent condition compared to the other two and I would rather have just replayed than to move on to the other courses.
Will play again soon.
This was my first visit to Wakefield. I found the course a bit challenging, but at times very forgiving off the tees. There weren't many on the course, so it moved quickly. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Employees terrible
I have played at this course several times because of the good prices. However, the staff at this course especially Hank has been terrible. There was no one at the course when I checked in and Hank would not let me start 15 min earlier than my tee time. The driving ranged was locked on a Saturday morning and I ha to call on my cell to get someone to open it. Hank has been rude several times on different occasions. The course is not in good shape.
Accessibility is the difference, 30 miles from Balt 50+ Wash
