Very Bad Experience
Yesterday, my friends and I visited Holden Hills Country Club for a long-awaited golf outing. After weeks of weather-related setbacks, we were thrilled to secure a 7:10 am tee time a week in advance. However, our excitement quickly turned to frustration upon arrival.
At 7 am, we were ready and eager to tee off at our scheduled time. The staff member responsible for ensuring punctual tee-offs confronted us, insisting that we were already late and must start immediately. Despite explaining our reservation time, we were met with dismissive responses, adding to our confusion.
Upon reaching the first hole, we were met with a group of approximately 15 impatient golfers, who were clearly waiting for their own tee times. Despite our attempts to clarify the situation, it became apparent that our tee time had been double-booked, causing an uncomfortable and rushed atmosphere.
With a sense of discomfort, we proceeded to hit our shots. Unfortunately, the group behind us made no effort to hide their displeasure, making discouraging comments after each of our shots.
Though we tried to address the situation with the older gentlemen, we were met with indifference and disrespect. The lack of support from the staff, particularly Fran, who oversees tee times, was disheartening.
Additionally, the course's practice of stacking golfers at the first hole seemed to exacerbate the issue, creating unnecessary tension and strain on both players and staff. This reflects more on Holden Hills' management than the golfers themselves.
Our negative experience is further compounded by the fact that my friend, who is still learning the game, may have been discouraged by this unfortunate incident. As someone who rarely writes reviews, I felt compelled to share this feedback as I have never felt so uncomfortable and disrespected during a golf outing.
I urge anyone in the area looking to golf to consider alternative courses. In the past, I have enjoyed playing at Quail Hollow, where the atmosphere and customer experience have been more positive. I hope that my review will prompt improvements at Holden Hills Country Club and lead to better experiences for future visitors.
What a joke
I understand it's a local, cheap course, but allowing multiple groups of 5 and 6 out on the course is ridiculous. Staff was nice but management has no idea how to run a golf course.
Disorganized and poor management
Place is a joke. Last two weekends had a 9 am tee time. Wasn't allowed to tee off until almost ten. They purposely double book tee times. Even the gentlemen they pay to be the starter was angry at management. Jeff the GM cannot manage the place. 45 minutes past our tee time, a foursome shows up and tells the starter "Jeff says we're next." The starter replied, "tell Jeff to (bad word that starts with an F, website won't let me type anything that relates to it, but you get my drift. Too bad because it's an actual quote.) himself. We're already backed up an hour." Well, Jeff got his way and the group of 5 got to tee off and slow everyone down more. Last week, there was a group of six in front of us. I understand the need to make up the lost revenue from April, however, Holden hills will lose money in the long run by not taking care of their regulars. Want to play with a group of 10 and ruin the experience for the groups behind you? This is the place to play. 7 1/2 hours to play 18 today. Spend your money elsewhere. Or just tell the staff that you know "Jeff".
Great spot and affordable rates
If you’re looking for a moderately difficult course, with a wide variety of Par 3s-5s, this is a perfect spot. Mix of some challenging holes with larger hazards and straight shots.... good balance for a competitive round!
Challenging Course - Great Deal
Pro shop staff were very disrespectful. Zero communication about teeing off/wait time. Cart guy was not helpful and tried to give us a cart full of trash. Members were respectful and let us play ahead of them. Course was decent condition, lots of poison ivy, but very deceiving. Water jugs on 18 were disgusting and pouring dirty water. Free lunch was good and the bartender was cute. I’d play here again for the price.
Good people good course, needs a map
Great staff and the course is fun to play, but there needs to be a layout on each hole or a map provided. Too many hazards and doglegs not avoided due to hitting blind.
Course was in good condition greens were very nice tee boxes were good and fairways were fine. Challenging holes but fair. Pro shop staff very friendly but course workers not very friendly and continued working around greens while players were on or near greens.
Great Staff
This was my first time playing and I cannot say enough about the staff, especially the pro shop. They were welcoming and very pleasant. It was a very hot day and the staff was concerned about the heat and emphasized the need to drink lots of water and eat some snacks. The course was challenging but enjoyable. I definitely will go back again.
Don’t bother
Course was in terrible shape, fairways not mown, greens SLOW, pace painfully slow. Our round took 5-1/2 hours. I’ll never play this course again
Holden HILLS for a reason
Great course challenging but not to long, play short anything long is danger on a lot of holes. Overall 4.5 out of 5 for and average golfer. Looking forward to playing again multiple blind shots so once through will definitely help improve on a score.
Holes too crowded
Pace of play was horrible. There was a 4-some in front of me, and it took one hour to play last three holes (and I was by myself). Don’t think there was anyone on front of them but might have been. Course conditions were ok, not great. My main beef is the holes are on top of one another, and positioned weirdly. I found directions to next home was horrible how you have to skip over holes to get to next home. Very challenging course but would never play there again.
Challenging course
The course was in good shape even after the rain earlier in the week. The staff was welcoming. It was the first time there for two of my playing partners and they like the way the course was laid out and how it had to be played. They hope to be back soon.
Never again
Pace was very slow-6 hour round. No ranger to speed up play - as if they did not care after they got your fees. Pro shop and restaurant staff were very friendly. Too bad they did not think to take care of their customers when they were on the course.
