I used to like this course.
I play this course almost every year when I vacation in the area and typically enjoy it. It's quiet, the layout is beautiful, and you can score well on it.
However, in the past couple of years I have become increasingly disappointed in the experience. I last played there on Sept. 4, 2017. The greens were VERY slow (I venture to say if you put a Stimpmeter on them they'd be about an 8), the fairways were shaggy, and the sand in the bunkers (not sure how best to describe this) was the consistency of quicksand (that includes the fairway bunkers); it was very difficult to get a sand wedge to bounce off of it; most of the time the wedge just dug in (btw, I'm a 16 hdcp so I feel I can get out of bunkers fairly well).
They need to mow the fairways and greens more often as well as roll the greens. Also, they need to get an official USGA course rating and slope. It puzzles me as to why they've never done this.
Not sure if I'll be back to play it in 2018 or not.
Nice course, nice day
Only negatve for my wife and me as senior golfers, was the rough was a little long and thick. But if I was 20 years younger they would have been fine.
Course was in great shape, greens are bigger than most courses
Every time I visit Sault Ste Marie I always make the effort to play here. The greens are always in amazing shape and the layout of the course is challenging but fair. The staff is very friendly and will go out of their way to help make your round as enjoyable as possible. If your in the area I definitely recommend going to play Hessel Ridge. You won't be disappointed!
A gem in the UP
The course was in great shape! The carts are always clean! The gal at the check in is awesome! It's a gem in the upper peninsula !
DISAPPOINTED IN STAFF
The owner charged my 70 year old, disabled mother to ride in the cart with me.We have golfed there for years. We will not be back!
good day of golf
We enjoyed Hessel Ridge .while not a long course has some holes requiring thought. The course has gotten better each time out.
Greens are good . I recommend the course for a very good round. It is an easy walk if you desire.
Good course. Fun. Easy course that is enjoyable. Yeah
Walk in the Woods
Course in good condition but minimal course yardages (even from tees). No current slope/rating. Pro shop minimal but friendly staff. Overpriced.
