Fun to Play

Played the Red/Blue course. The Red 9, was not in very good condition. Tee boxes were pretty chewed up, Lots of clover around the greens. Some greens were 25% covered in Goose droppings. Blue course was much better condition. Greens were fairly fast. Both course had plenty of landing areas. Overall, fun to play.

Very friendly staff.

The staff was great. The course was in OK shape but the greens were quick. The fairway had some bad spots.
An enjoyable afternoon and great value for me.

Milking the course

We played the blue and red nines. The course has a nice layout, but its condition is poor. The fairways must have had a lot of fungus as the grass was sparse. The greens on the red course had moss and dandelions. The tees on par three holes were very gouged out - had to look for places where there was grass. No graphic images of the holes on the scorecards. Few ball washers. Most of the tee signs did not have images of the holes.

fun to play

This course is not as easy as it looks. It has a lot of ups and downs and the greens are tricky. I cannot say enough good things about the staff. They called to let me know I was booked behind a huge outing and got me out quicker so we didn't have to wait. After suffering a 3-1/3 hour 9 hole round at Cedar River the day before, this guy was a real blessing! I will continue to play this course everytime we get up here. It is a real value and well worth the drive from Traverse City.

Good course worth playing

We have played Mistwood many times. All three nines are a bit different from each other and have some beautiful holes. The course is of above average difficulty. The only reason it is not ranked higher is that this time the condition was not as good as expected. There were rocks in the bunkers, weeds on the tees and rough spots on greens. Also, be aware that the 7th hole on the white course is being rebuilt. This hole used to be the most difficult par 4 at Mistwood, but is now temporarily played as a par 3.

Fun little course but needs massive work

Let me preface this review by saying I just played The Bear and Arcadia Bluffs the two rounds before playing at this course, so perhaps my feelings about this course may be slightly skewed. I played the blue/red combination with my girlfriend and two other family members.

The layout of the course is nice with the space between green to tee being minimal. This would be a course that you can easily walk if you so desire. The blue course has some holes which I would consider picturesque. The 8th hole on the blue 9 was by far my favorite looking hole being a par 3 with a forced carry over a ravine/pond and surrounded by trees. The red course was much more bland and wide open. Nothing really stood out to me as being "special."

I feel that saying the course conditions were "fair" is being generous. The tee boxes were in poor shape especially on the par 3's. The fairways were patchy with some sections looking like they were burned up or diseased and other sections being thick with clover patches. Many of the times I was the in the fairway; I was hitting off of hard-pan. The greens were no better than the fairways. The greens were slow and also had patches of clover growing on them. Other sections of green were burned out or just contained no grass. On several of the greens there were numerous ant hills which you had to putt around. It appeared as if the course had been in great shape in the past but has been allowed to deteriorate.

The pace of play was rough. It took over 5 hours to finish our round. On every hole on the back 9 we were waiting for the 3 some in front of us. The ranger came out and watched our group play a hole. He made no comment about pace of play. I have no idea if he spoke to the group in front of us to speed them up. If he did, it didn't work.

The employees were cordial and helpful. The hot dogs were very good. The beer was cold. That's about the only nice thing I can say about the day.

In my opinion, it is worth spending the extra 10-20 bucks to play somewhere else around Traverse City until they put the necessary work into the course. Leelanau Club comes to mind as a comparable course but it slightly more to play but is in much better condition.

Overall a pleasant experience...

Overall, this was a pretty pleasant experience. I ended up playing "White" to "Blue" the day I played, and enjoyed both nines. Course was in OK condition; quite a bit of clover on some fairways and greens. There were some incredibly scenic spots, and others that were a little more "rough", including the teeing grounds for the (now) par 3 7th on the white course. The layout was fantastic, and the overall scenery even better; but with some serious TLC, this course could rank as one of the best in the state. Grown in bunkers that were never filled, a VERY sloppy teeing area for the 7th hole, and dead patches spotting MOST of the greens.

The two nines that I played were similar overall, but played like two unique courses. My favorite was the last par 3 over the ravine on the Blue Course. The elevation changes make for some interesting shot choices!

Pace of play wasn't an issue. I never encountered another group the day I played, and I played alone.

Overall, I would play this course again and rate it 4/5 stars. Would easily be a 5/5 if they spruced up the course a bit. As good or better LAYOUT as other courses in the area, but very very below average with the conditions compared to others in the area...... but worth playing due to it's proximity to downtown Traverse City (approx. 25 minute drive).

White nine not so good, blue nine much better

Course was not in great shape. A ton of clover in the fairways. Dry fairways. Greens were the best part. They rolled true and even. Blue nine was pretty nice. Some beautiful holes.

Big fairways and Large Greens

The red white is the shorter of the 3 nines being a par 70. Only 2 par fives. I love courses with big fairways and large greens and this has it. This leaves a lot of room for error but yet still challenging. A bit of a drive from TC but I think worth it. The course does need some work however and feels like it has not been kept up. Weeds in grassy areas and black tarp visible in the bunkers. However probably TC's best value.

Great course

We played in 3.5 hours hardly waiting at all. The course is a simple layout but there is fescue everywhere which makes it significantly more difficult. Also a great beer selection at good prices. Would definitely recommend getting out here.

Gradually moving downhill

Have been playing for years. This round was Red Course and White Course. Red Course fairways were in good shape, greens not up to normal Mistwood standards. White course both fairways and greens in good shape.

Biggest disappointment was the destruction of the signature 7th hole on the White course. Rumor is they sold the fairway to a private party to build a house on a duck pond adjacent to the course. They have turned the most challenging par 4 on the course into a par 3 so now there are three par 3's on the 9 hole White course including two back to back. Sad.

Course used to have links style rough, smooth fast greens, great fun to play. Most of the natural rough has been mowed down which significantly reduces the challenge of the layout. Greens are slower than they used to be. They are gradually turning a fine golf course into a nothing special course.

Avoid the Rough

The rough is hard to hit out of and easy to lose your ball in. There's plenty of fairway to aim for. Beautiful course!

Rough shape

Course is in real rough shape. Dead grass, terrible rock hard tee boxes, and the redo of a hole which nobody mentioned are among the issues. I hope they water the course soon. Greens aren't to bad. Roll fairly true... I would never pay full price to play here

A Ffine Up North Experience

The red nine is much easier than the blue. Much more wide open and forgiving.
