Good value for a descent course
Sand traps need work. Looks like they are working on them but have several more to.do. Played on a week day price was right and played 18 in 3.5hrs moms
Disregard views from before 2022
I avoided this course when it was Alwyn Downs, because the reviews on this app sounded bad. Construction near the course, bad conditions, etc. But this course today was great. The course was in good shape, most of the holes give you a risk/reward choice from the teebox, and the staff is super friendly.
Good Value
Overall good value. There were many weeds on the course that made it hard to find your ball in the rough. Staff was friendly.
Double billed
I made the tee time and prepaid on TeeOff app. When I checked in the staff said I wasnt prepaid and asked that I pay again. Still fighting to get my second charge refunded.
Nice course
The ladies in the pro shop were friendly and helped get us started right away. No complaints
The Marshall Reconstruction
Right when you pull in you immediately find out its under new management from the enormous signage out front. In my eyes, that can be either good or bad...
I arrived fairly early so I could check out the grounds since it was my first time at Alywn Downs GC.
The golf course is neighboring to a small airstrip which was pretty unique. The sound of the planes didn't distract at all. You can see the airstrip on hole I want to say 6? maybe 7? We didn't get to see a plane land or take off but you get the jist.
The clubhouse - The clubhouse is being renovated. They have a full bar and the guy there was very knowledgeable about the history and reconstruction of the course. He told me that half of the course is being turned into real estate (subdivisions) so they are cutting the course down to 9 holes. I joked that it BETTER turn into a CHAMPIONSHIP 9 hole course with the money they'll make from the real estate.
The course - NOT great shape. I can't beat around the bush, the course was in pretty bad conditions. The rough was THICK, the roots and trees were extremely over grown, many dry patches on the greens and the holes were miserably cut.
Another unique thing on the course was that on one of the holes, it lines up directly with a cemetery. A huge cemetery to boot, so if you're slice is wild...you might be searching for your ball with the lost souls of Marshall.
All and All... it was worth the trip for $16, go check it out before they turn into a 9 hole course!
Casual Golf Reviews
Walked the front 9 at Alwyn Downs in Marshall, MI this afternoon. This course is back open after being closed last golf season. Located next to a small airfield, this is a nice piece of property with rolling hills large mature trees. Overall this course is in pretty rough shape but has the potential to be really nice.
Overall Rating 6.75/10
Conditions 5/10
Not being taken care of for at least a year it’s understandable to not be in great shape. The fairways were really thin and patchy. Most of the greens were in ok shape with spots heard and there that weren’t good. The entire 8th green is considered ground under repair.
Friendliness 6/10
Having to walk at least a quarter mile from the 7th green to the 8th tee wasn’t much fun. Looks like they converted a par 5 to a par 3 to make room for a new subdivision. Also many of the signs labeling to tee boxes were facing the inside so from the previous green it was hard to tell which hole was the next.
Returnabilty 7/10
There are some really cool holes and I would like to come back in a few years and play it again but the conditions need to improve quite a bit.
Cost 9/10
$9 to walk 9, fair price.
Golf course is being developed for housing
Sadly, Alwyn Downs is a mess. It is transitioning to a 9 hole course to make room for a housing development. In the mean time, the golf course is not being maintained at all. The greens, fairways, and tees are terrible.
I have played the course several times over the years so it was a sad day. Considering the 50 minute drive I think they should add a disclaimer to there selling tee times on GolfNow. I try to travel around to play different courses each week and this one was a mistake. DO NOT PLAY ALWYN DOWNS.
Good Course
This course is in pretty good shape right now. Not crowded, so you can play at your own pace most of the time. Greens are slick, and in good condition. Course has very few hazards, I think 2 water and a few sand. Sand bunkers suck, need a lot of new sand. Overall, a nice course that is easy to score on.
