Tee Boxes and Greens
The only characteristics that make this a golf course are the fairly maintained greens with flags along with spots designated to tee up the ball. There is no fairway or first- and second-cuts of rough; anything not considered green is a second-cut of rough. There is no short grass and I would have had better lies hitting from the rock solid bunkers than the 2 inch long fairway grass.
Needs a makeover
This course could totally be a hidden gem if someone would actually put some money into it. Like most everyone else said, the fairways are non-existent. There are markings and barriers up all over because of all the drainage issues which makes it even more difficult to see where you should be aiming and where your ball landed. You can't really beat the price though at a little more then a buck a hole. But you definitely do get what you pay for here.
This course was in bad shape
This course doesn't have fairways and has been very wet so all the grass is long and thick. Even when a good shot is hit you have a hard time finding the ball and are hitting out of a bad lie. I've played this course before and this is the worst I've seen it.
Nice day but bad grass
There is a drainage problem. Try not to go here after any rain storms.
Also, if the grass isn't fresh cut you'll have trouble finding even the cleanest fairway drives.
Where are the fairways
Greens are in excellent shape, but there is very little or no difference in the cut of the fairways or the rough. Course was pretty wet, but we have got a lot of rain recently. Mosquitos were overpowering in the shaded areas by the woods as well. Staff was excellent and totally friendly and helpful.
Horrible course
this course was so bad as playable conditions. Should not even be a course
horrendous condition
The course is in absolutely horrible condition. Mud everywhere, standing water in middle of fairways, tire ruts from the carts, and horrendous greens. Not worth the money.
This is really bad
This is a horrible course. It's more like playing an extended driving range. It is impossible to tell the difference between the fairway, rough and the green. Speaking of the green, they were in terrible condition. Maple seeds covered the surface and the green itself was more brown than green. It is cheap, about $1 a hole, if you walk.
Well played
Tees were brown, no carts, course is well used! Will not play again!
unreal
I couldn't believe the condition of this course. Its as if they don't own lawnmowers for the fairways. Lost a number of balls because the grass wasn't cut and you couldn't tell where the fariway and rough started. Staff was friendly and warned us of condition on the back nine. Mosquitos also horrendous.
Palmer Woods Golf Course
I've played at other Vargo golf courses such as the Myth and Rackham and really enjoyed them. Decided to try Palmer Woods and it was the worst course I've ever played at. The course was not maintained especially the back 9! The fairways were not cut, tall beds of grass everywhere! Took 10 minutes every time you hit your ball to find it. Deep trenches of mud and dirt in the middle of the course. The worst part was how bad the mosquitos were, they were unbearable! Left after three holes and made sure I contacted the Vargo Company because of these issues. I would have given the course zero stars if I could, wouldn't recommend this course to anyone! Couldn't pay me to play here!
Save your money for bills, beer, gas...anything but paying to play here!
This course is by far the worst course in the world!! The back 9 is soggy, smells, and there is no disguinshable fairway. Even on the front 9, you will lose balls in the FAIRWAY, yes the Fairway. This course should be closed immediately or donated to the city for free play. I wouldn't recommend this course to any being with the exception of a dog. Perfect lanscape for them to use the restroom !! DO NOT PLAY HERE EVER. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!
DRAINAGE VERY BAD
THIS COURSE HAS THE POTENTIAL OF BEING A JEWEL IN THE CITY. VERY MUDDY AND THEREFORE GRASS HIGH ON THE MAJORITY OF HOLES.
LOST TOO MANY BALLS EITHER IN THE HIGH GRASS OR THE MUD
Palmer Park
Great course for anyone who lives along the Woodward corridor. Easy to get to from either side of town too.
Good bang for your buck.
The location is a big plus for me and you can't beat the value. The course was slightly saturated due to the heavy rain in the region but overall it was a good experience.
Recent rains ruined this course
Have played this course several times when visiting Detroit. Unfortunately, this time was a case of bad timing. Recent heavy rains left this course in terrible shape. The fairways were uncut, the rough was deep and because of abundant standing water, the mosquitoes were out in full force. Palmer Park is a fun, accessible municipal course. But on this day, it was not a pleasurable experience. Bring bug spray!
Swamp lands
Me and my brother in law went here to golf. First off the course should have been closed half of it was under water. Not sure if it was sewage or just water. No cart girl and the grass was not well kept. DO NOT GO HERE
This course is in the city.
Back 9 needs more maintenance. Fairways are uncut.
This course has small greens that roll true...better hit your ball.
The course make you pay attention to detail. Played again 8/7/14....back nine is very challenging. The course is worth playing until you beat it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Value
Not the nicest course, but it was reasonably well maintained and very cheap! Almost nobody else on the course, so rate of play was great. Deer like to roam the area and have very poor golf etiquette.
