Pace of play DESTROYED the round.
First of all, I'll start off positive and say that this is one of the most senic and well maintained courses I've ever been to, and I have played many courses that golfnow offers in my area. Some of them have cost double or even triple what I paid to play Sycamore Hills.
Unfortunately, the views and course layout do not make up for the way they manage groups and slow play. This my second time there, and the same thing happened to me the 1st time, so I just wrote it off as a fluke, but going 2 for 2, kinda rules out coincidence for me. What they do is they double book every tee time (to cover for no shows I guess). They have a ranger and a starter, but they are useless. Long story short, I ended up playing 13 holes in 4 hours (in a cart) and from the 14th on there were 6 somes waiting behind walkers, behind other 6 somes. If I would have stayed to finish, the round would have taken around 6 hours. The worst part about it was that there are 27 holes there, but everyone was gridlocked on one of the 9s. So Instead of finishing the round, i drove to the cart return, probably never to return, which is sad because of the quality of the course. I would understand this if it was a Saturday at noon and it was just the sheer volume of people, but I teed of at 1030 on a Tuesday.
In conclusion, if you have 6 or 7 hours for a round of golf, props to you for the patience and commitment. Go spend them them at Sycamore Hills. The course is beautiful.
Good day in late November
Course was in good shape for late November. Greens were a little bumpy.
Need help with the leaves
Near impossible to find ur ball if just off fairway due to the amount of leaves. Leaves need to be blown into the woods
Great course, Horrible pace of play
The course is fun and quite beautiful but the staff seemingly doesn’t know how to manage their golf course. Played my first 9 with no one in sight, then the back 9 we are backed up 3 groups on hole 11 when they have 3 9s, seemingly no flow. Love this course, but if it’s anytime after 9am good luck with getting your round complete in a respectful time.
Buyer beware
Never been to a more unprofessional place of business. I show up for my usually early tee time as a single the group who’s set to tee off before me was a foursome and they were all hanging and talking with the starter till I eventually got to tee off 15 minutes after my scheduled tee time. No big deal we’re on the course golfing now. Well around the 2nd hole another cart pulls up to join them now making it a fivesome and they never allowed me to play through after 7 holes it’s been over 2 and a half hours. I then pick my ball up out of the fairway and drive past the green they have been standing on for 10 minutes to go to the next hole. As I’m teeing up all three of there carts come right next to my tee box and they ask why I passed them and I told them it’s taking a little too long I’m just trying to play my round well they then started to try and fight with me about my decision on passing them. Talked through my swing they were legitimately trying to fight me. I flag down a course Marshall and let him know the guys behind me are trying to escalate things as I’m not trying to go to jail for beating up an old guy on a golf course. The course Marshall informs me that they are employees at the golf course and not to take it seriously. I can assure you myself nor anyone I am in contact with will ever give this place another dime as long as they allow there workers to treat people with that much disrespect. Much nicer golf courses in the area for the same or lower prices.
Lush Greens and fairways
Cannot comment on prior reviews regarding pace of play because I played 9 early morning. However cart drop off looked busy when I returned. Greens we’re in great shape. Fairways are soft but pretty filled with unreplaced divots. Tee boxes were similar. Areas of grass were in great condition but a lot of divots. Overall course is in better shape than courses in the area. Price point was good for weekend morning.
Good potential unrealized
Nice layout with 3 9-hole courses. Clinton River was overflowing, which didn't have much affect on play, but creates hazards that aren't intended. Food choices are basically just 1 item (hot dogs the day I went) and a few snacks. Small driving range is ok. The unacceptable part was the pace of play. Our tee time at 8:30 was already backed up on the 1st tee by 12 people. 5 hours later (as a twosome!) we were on hole 15 and just left. They overbook too close together and didn't see any rangers to speed people up.
Pace of play terrible
It took us over an hour to play 3 holes yesterday. The fourth was backed up with 16 players from a womens league. Ranger suggested going back to play 1-3 again. We did not get to play 7-9. Absolutely terrible management of the league and tee times.
Storm
The day before we played there were major thunderstorms. We played around noon they did an incredible job getting things back in great shape lots of crew members cleaning everything up.
Very impressive and shows there commitment to keeping the corse well above average conditions
Course management
I played early Thursday with a group. We were the first ones out and played 9 holes around 2-2:15 minutes. Make the turn and there’s 20 people in front of us. I asked the started why this happens every time I play here and he said because we played too fast. They over book this course way too much. For the price it’s just unacceptable, that will be the last time I ever play here.
Enjoyable experience
Played West and South. Decent pace, conditions were nice, bar cart was out. Great day.
Just ok
Course layout is fun, bunkers were horrible. Almost unplayable and tee boxes and spots of the fairway the same. Real issue is the lack of etiquette from the rangers and starters. Just a bunch of grumpy dudes that drive behind across fairways and teeboxes while youre hitting.
It sounds like you had a reasonably frustrating round. We'd like to give you a better experience if possible. I encourage you to call Matthew at (586) 598-9500 ext. 1 so we can make it right.
I appreciate the time and thought put into addressing my experience at your facility. I doubt many places would have taken the time.
Hello, Scott9663332. Thank you for playing Sycamore Hills and we appreciate your compliments regarding the golf course. I am sorry you had a slow round when you played here and that our rangers failed to move along slow golfers. Tuesday, May 1st was our first beautiful day of the season and many golfers decided to take advantage. If you call the Pro Shop we would be more than happy to address your concern on the course and alleviate any issues.
We do utilize each of our three 9-hole courses and did so on the day you played. I promise that we never double-book tee-times and do not permit 6-somes. It is possible for two groups to have the same tee-time but starting on different courses.
Again, I apologize that you had a slow round which diminished your experience here. We hope you reconsider playing at Sycamore Hills in the future. We would love to show you a great time at our facility. If you would like to discuss this further, feel free to call Matthew at (586) 598-9500 ext. 1.
