Hidden Gem in Kansas City
I played Hillcrest for my 4th time over a few years and every time I'm surprised its not more popular. The staff is extremely friendly, drink prices are some of if not the best in KC and given the time of year (early September) conditions were great especially with how dry its been. Will play again hopefully sooner than later
Fairways need help but challenging
Enjoyed the layout of the course. I felt it was very challenging. The greens were in great shape. The fairways were not in good shape. It was tough to find a good place to hit from on the fairway. I felt it was too much for what poor shape the course was in.
Donald Ross design equals great layout.
Has with most courses Hillcrest is staffing issues. The pro was great, got me off early so I could make an appointment. It appears they maybe putting some $ back into the coarse,. Just be patient.
Overall, the course was in good condition. Some of the grass edges along the cart part need some work, but, sand traps, greens, and most of the fairways were in excellent shape.
Greens and routing are great
Has the bones to be spectacular. Great routing, greens were in phenomenal shape and the right speed for a public course. They could definitely speed them up if they wanted and you'd have your work cut out for you. Longer hitters have the chance to score well on some of the short par 4s, some almost drivable from the whites. The bunker renovation in 2020 was money well spent. Pace of play was not a concern, no one ahead of us for 2 holes or behind. Teed off at 4:02 and it was somewhat steady with other golfers but not packed like some courses currently in the metro. Seem to be understaffed or lack the budget on the maintenance team. Some trees need to be trimmed or taken down and there is overgrowth on some long grass one hole onto the cart path that just needs to be trimmed back. Small attention to detail things that could make it great. Clubhouse is old and has seen better days. Driving range they have let go and looks to be closed. Hope this course stays open, a 1916 Donald Ross was a treat. Will definitely be back, had a blast
Shot placement is key
Played with a local who knew the course which really helped. Liked the layout and course in good shape despite the heat of summer. One annoying thing was the carts and no travel areas - off fairway is off limits for some reason so the cart locks up and you have to reverse in a big circle for the electro-death-grip to be released. That was annoying and directly opposite of all other courses in CHI
Positioning matters
Course was dry but the greens were in excellent shape. Fairways were dry due to hilly terrain which forces water to the lowest points but playable. This is more of a shotmaker’s course for positioning to have a good approach. I enjoyed myself and plan to return.
