The Shattuck is one of the most unique, picturesque and challenging courses you will ever play and i try to play it 1-2 times a year (more if i lived closer). Carved out of the woods in one of the most incredible settings - it is a thinking man's course where you do not hit driver on every hole. Over all, the course is in good shape. The greens were in good condition, but because of the 95+ heat, they were allowed to grow (and were a little slow), but they should be in fantastic condition for the rest of the summer. One suggestion: bring a range finder or GPS watch. Highly recommended for the serious golfer!

I work at a golf course in Mass. My job as a starter and player assistant on the course is to make players feel welcomed and happy to be there and hopefully return. The staff at Shattuck is a great example of what every course should be.

What a challenging course. Target golf here. Get some crazy bounces. Greens in great shape. Great views. Keep driver in the bag. Shot an 89 for my first time ever playing here. Will be back and will know how to play the course better now.

You can score on this course if you have patience & a decent iron game. My 3 iron got a lot of use off the tee. Hit to the markers when you can and it will save you a few strokes. the greens were a touch slow, but in nice shape.

I always try to play here once per year. This is my third time and it is always a great experience. It is target golf folks and it is very challenging. There is a reason it was voted as one of the top 50 courses in the country. If you don't want that type of experience, don't play. It is unique with unbelievable views on most holes. If you don't hit the fairways or landing spots on your drives, your ball is most likely gone. Greens are challenging as well and there is plenty of water and marsh on most drives to navigate over. Pro shop attendants are always friendly. Others who complain about this course did not do their homework on what to expect and ended up losing a lot of balls. Enjoy it for what it is or don't go!

First time playing The Shattuck. I had heard it was difficult but thought playing it late in the season would make it enjoyable and challenging. The Head Pro was very friendly and hooked me up with three other golfers who had played it before. I was told to aim at the pile markers on each hole. The problem was if you missed the pile marker by more than five yards either side your ball was gone. Lost ball! In addition you could not see from the tee where to "miss". Also, probably five or six holes you could not even see the pole marker from the tee. Blind shot after blind shot. It was hit and hope! In addition, the condition of the course was bad. For some reason I thought the course was a special resort type course. It was a mountain course at best with a lot of bad lies in fairways and rough. You couldn't see the fairway from the tee on many holes. Our golf cart had no governor on it so going downhill was dangerous. Cartpaths were a mess. Greens were okay. Sand traps were wet and grainy. Snack bar at turn had some specials which were pretty reasonable but slow. I am a five handicap and lost five golf balls. I can't imagine playing this course in the spring before your swing is in tact. I won't rush back to play here!

This is the friendliest golf course I have ever been to. I work at a golf course and I wish we were this good. The course is very very difficult but not too long. Accuracy is the key. You basically have 2 choices. Fairway or lost ball. Not just kidding. Bring a lot of balls if you are an average golfer. 1 more thing,Dont even think about walking.

Shattuck GC was in great condition when we played and the greens were a bit slow but in pristine shape. This course requires pin point accuracy on almost all your shots from tee to green but if you play to the course markers you will be okay. The views here of Mt. Monadnock are spectacular and there is an abundance of wildlife around to keep things interesting between holes.

Wow! This course is the most beautiful nature walk I've ever taken while swinging a stick at little white balls. You need to focus on the beauty of your surroundings ... do not look at your score!. So much fun, but bring lots of extra balls. The brush is dense. the abundant swamps, ponds, and streams are not forgiving. The mountain views had me snapping pictures more than usual. I got a great deal on GolfNow -- $25 including cart. Can't wait to get to check out the fall leaves in a few weeks. A real New England gem.

Very memorable round. Very tight fairways, lots of forced carries and smallish greens make you think your way around this course. There were several times, however, where hitting to the the yellow post in the center of the fairway left an extremely challenging second shot. Playing the course a second time, I would hit some of my tee shots farther than the posts. Greens were in exceptional shape, but some of the fairways were choppy, and the sand traps need work, but for $40, it was a bargain. The scenery is really beautiful, and the course is extremely quiet - just you and nature. Play one set of tees forward and hit your shots relatively straight and you will really enjoy this course.

I’ve played my fair share of bad courses over the year and most of them didn’t start out with much potential anyway, making the dreary experiences mostly forgetful. The Shuttack HAS potential, a lot of it actually, and that makes it far more frustrating when I find myself not enjoying the course any of the times I've visited.

One of the perks of golfing in New Hampshire is the abundant wildlife and scenic views and this is what the Shattuck has decided to hang its hat on. That’s all fine and dandy but some of my favorite courses have found a way to highlight all those views and all that wildlife while complementing it with a great golf course. Afterall, I can take a hike up Mt. Monadnock (the most climbed mountain in the world just a mile or two down the road) for free. I pay Shattuck for the pleasure of a nice round of golf.

The course itself is laid out with plenty of variety and a variety of challenges with many holes encircling ponds and swamps, fairways divided by marshland and rocky outcroppings, and here and there an occasional elevation change. But rather than trying to soften the edges a bit to help make the game enjoyable for most, the excessive forced carries, bizarrely-shaped fairways that cause unpredictable bounces and innumerous blind shots will make even a low-handicap clergyman curse. There is nothing inviting about the layout and its challenges don't encourage you to play here more to learn how to overcome them.

The Shattuck is ranked nationally as one of the toughest courses you can play, but I’ve played others just as difficult that do things differently that make a big difference. The most important of these is proper communication: what to expect, where to go, and how to play the course. While the minimal staffing at Shattuck is friendly enough, I wasn’t asked if I had played here before, wasn’t given any overview of the course, its condition, suggested tee box, or how to navigate the sometimes-incomprehensible layout. I estimated you would have to play this course at least 5 times within a year to be confident enough to play it without getting lost or hitting shots where you *think* the fairway/green is rather than where it actually is.

The course conditions didn’t help. Yes, this is northern New England and the seasons are tough on golf courses but others nearby seem to manage it just fine. Here, the fairways were clumpy to the extent I moved my ball out of multiple low spots, they have bare spots and have weeds in them. The greens were much improved over my last visit 3 years ago but still don’t roll smoothly at all. The bunkers had washout despite no rain for at least 3 days, and the cart paths, oh my! There are hiking paths up Mt. Monadnock that are smoother than these that are supposedly designed for golf carts.

Sadly, there aren’t any off-course considerations that would help the course’s overall rating. The driving range'a position tucked away over by the 10th tee across the road is a logistical headache for getting back to start your round on time,, the rack rates are much higher than the course conditions demand, and the pace of play was abysmal. There was no starter or ranger or refreshment cart on the course. Apparently the restaurant there is pretty nice, so if you go visit, maybe skip the round and have a drink and some food and watch everyone else suffer through this nightmare. I’ll stick to Crotched Mtn GC and Bretwood GC in the future.
