This green tucked away on the par-5 5th is my favorite on the course. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 04/15/2021

The par-4 8th is an intimidating tee shot, like so many here. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 04/15/2021

The greens putted better than they looked and many looked better than this one. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 04/15/2021

The Shattuck is home to many narrow fairways with elevated tees. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 04/15/2021

Always a challenge
Shattuck GC was in great condition when we played and the greens were a bit slow but in pristine shape. This course requires pin point accuracy on almost all your shots from tee to green but if you play to the course markers you will be okay. The views here of Mt. Monadnock are spectacular and there is an abundance of wildlife around to keep things interesting between holes.
great condition friendly staff
Hadn't played Shattuck for years due to unhappiness with conditions and staff. Played again was pleasantly surprised by course conditions and Tom's friendly staff. Felt like a member more than a guest. Greens and fairways were pristine and maintenance staff was hard at work making improvements. Won't be years before next visit.
Challenging Scenic Adventure
Wow! This course is the most beautiful nature walk I've ever taken while swinging a stick at little white balls. You need to focus on the beauty of your surroundings ... do not look at your score!. So much fun, but bring lots of extra balls. The brush is dense. the abundant swamps, ponds, and streams are not forgiving. The mountain views had me snapping pictures more than usual. I got a great deal on GolfNow -- $25 including cart. Can't wait to get to check out the fall leaves in a few weeks. A real New England gem.
All You Can Handle
Very memorable round. Very tight fairways, lots of forced carries and smallish greens make you think your way around this course. There were several times, however, where hitting to the the yellow post in the center of the fairway left an extremely challenging second shot. Playing the course a second time, I would hit some of my tee shots farther than the posts. Greens were in exceptional shape, but some of the fairways were choppy, and the sand traps need work, but for $40, it was a bargain. The scenery is really beautiful, and the course is extremely quiet - just you and nature. Play one set of tees forward and hit your shots relatively straight and you will really enjoy this course.
Tough!
This is one of the toughest courses in the U.S..I tell my friends it has 2 choices,Fairway,Lost ball. LOL. Not really a joke. The best target course ever. Don't even think about trying to cut a corner and if you don't hit to the target make sure to kiss the ball first as you will need to day goodbye.
The Potential Makes The Poor Experience All The More Painful
I’ve played my fair share of bad courses over the year and most of them didn’t start out with much potential anyway, making the dreary experiences mostly forgetful. The Shuttack HAS potential, a lot of it actually, and that makes it far more frustrating when I find myself not enjoying the course any of the times I've visited.
One of the perks of golfing in New Hampshire is the abundant wildlife and scenic views and this is what the Shattuck has decided to hang its hat on. That’s all fine and dandy but some of my favorite courses have found a way to highlight all those views and all that wildlife while complementing it with a great golf course. Afterall, I can take a hike up Mt. Monadnock (the most climbed mountain in the world just a mile or two down the road) for free. I pay Shattuck for the pleasure of a nice round of golf.
The course itself is laid out with plenty of variety and a variety of challenges with many holes encircling ponds and swamps, fairways divided by marshland and rocky outcroppings, and here and there an occasional elevation change. But rather than trying to soften the edges a bit to help make the game enjoyable for most, the excessive forced carries, bizarrely-shaped fairways that cause unpredictable bounces and innumerous blind shots will make even a low-handicap clergyman curse. There is nothing inviting about the layout and its challenges don't encourage you to play here more to learn how to overcome them.
The Shattuck is ranked nationally as one of the toughest courses you can play, but I’ve played others just as difficult that do things differently that make a big difference. The most important of these is proper communication: what to expect, where to go, and how to play the course. While the minimal staffing at Shattuck is friendly enough, I wasn’t asked if I had played here before, wasn’t given any overview of the course, its condition, suggested tee box, or how to navigate the sometimes-incomprehensible layout. I estimated you would have to play this course at least 5 times within a year to be confident enough to play it without getting lost or hitting shots where you *think* the fairway/green is rather than where it actually is.
The course conditions didn’t help. Yes, this is northern New England and the seasons are tough on golf courses but others nearby seem to manage it just fine. Here, the fairways were clumpy to the extent I moved my ball out of multiple low spots, they have bare spots and have weeds in them. The greens were much improved over my last visit 3 years ago but still don’t roll smoothly at all. The bunkers had washout despite no rain for at least 3 days, and the cart paths, oh my! There are hiking paths up Mt. Monadnock that are smoother than these that are supposedly designed for golf carts.
Sadly, there aren’t any off-course considerations that would help the course’s overall rating. The driving range'a position tucked away over by the 10th tee across the road is a logistical headache for getting back to start your round on time,, the rack rates are much higher than the course conditions demand, and the pace of play was abysmal. There was no starter or ranger or refreshment cart on the course. Apparently the restaurant there is pretty nice, so if you go visit, maybe skip the round and have a drink and some food and watch everyone else suffer through this nightmare. I’ll stick to Crotched Mtn GC and Bretwood GC in the future.
League
my friend and I were visiting Vermont. We bought s tee time for 18 and they sent us out in the middle of a woman's league of golf. We weren't even able to finish playing 18 holes
Great course in Monadnock region
Solid conditions, friendly staff highly recommend this course.
Challenging Golf for the true golf lovers
The Shattuck is a hidden gem. The most beautiful greens I've played in quite some time. Used every golf club in my bag off the tee.
Aim for the Yellow marker on every hole and you have a chance to score. Don't and you're in for a bad day. Scenic and beautiful. Old school cart paths and no carts of the fairways. I truly enjoyed my experience.
Bring your "A" game
Greens perfect. Course in great shape. Challenging but if you are careful you can score well. If you play the back tees it will be the toughest course you ever play. Back tee slope is 147!
Alot more potential
I played this course yesterday and was very excited as I knew it was at the base of Mt Monadnock and potentially offered scenic views. From that perspective I was not disappointed as you had awesome views of the mountain at several tee boxes and greens and I had a good time, however just about everything else was. The fairways were awful, there were shrubs and bushes right in front of tee boxes that clearly effected your drives, bunkers were not raked, and it made an already challenging course that much harder. The plus side was the greens were nice, just a little slow. Now I don't know the irrigation or staff situation with maintenance but I think that if this course was kept in better condition and the right care got put into it there is potential for a gem of a course, as of right now however its sub-par if not worse.
Greens where in great shape.
Shattuck is currently in much better shape than many of the surrounding drought stricken courses. The greens are actually green and mowed for good performance not to fast not to slow. Fairways also are not burn't out. Always challenging it's worth the trip.
Shattuck conditions on July 6
a couple of my buddies played with me yesterday (july 6)..I had called before and they were honest in saying the fairways had many dry spots but the greens were very good with no burnout. After playing they were correct. But to us fairways are always secondary compared to good greens...they were very, very good...held well...very smooth.....we can put up with the fairways (take a lie!!), but the greens have to be good to be worth playing which they were. Combined with the superb layout it's always fun to go there!! We played 27 holes as usual w/o running out of balls and had a great time. The woods provided excellent shade on a hot day while riding the cart and the staff is really great and helpful if you don't know the course...they provided a new tip sheet as to the best way to play the holes....absolutely no complaints here....dry fairways were not a big deal considering the great challenging layout and good greens
Disappointed
The course was not well maintained and difficult to figure out for a first timer playing there. There were some pretty and interesting holes. Cart path only made it more of a challenge as well.
A Unique Experience.
I played from the white tees. To play well, you need an accurate 180 yard club, 150 yard club and wedge. The staff was friendly and proud of their golf course. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will play again.
Love this place
This is a course where you go to refine your game. It's target golf at its finest. Play the right club and don't miss. If you miss your target by the slightest degree, their course will bite you. This is not a course for the faint of heart, be bold but also smart.
This could be a great golf course
I chose to play while my wife was attending a seminar, therefore, my choice was limited. However, I would play the course again if the opportunity presents, but I would not make the trip (3hrs) just to play it. I enjoyed the layout and the scenery. The greens were good, but the fairways had bare/thin spots. Some very challenging holes and some not so much. I was advised to be patient and not greedy. It was good advice, the course proved to be mostly target golf. The carts are older and mine broke down and had to be replaced. The weather was 50ish and breezy to windy.
Lots of fun.. beautiful scenery.
This is a target course. Absolutely beautiful and well maintained.
Amen, you nailed it.The Shattuck is pure torture all the way from first to last hole
